    Knowledge audit roles and contributions towards continuous quality improvement: A review

    Knowledge audit output helps organizations to make recommendation of KM strategy that can be used for better managing the knowledge. However, knowledge audit can only be an effective strategic tool if the process is done cyclically and continuously. This paper reviews literature on knowledge audit process with the aim to understand the various roles and contributions of knowledge audit in knowledge management initiatives. The literature was analyzed by adopting the three -stage method for extracting, analyzing and reporting the literature- based findings. The paper concludes with an understanding on how knowledge audit output could contribute to the organizations’ continuous quality improvement

    A Review on Knowledge Audit Process

    Knowledge audit output helps organizations to make recommendation of KM strategy which later can be used for better managing the knowledge. This paper reviews literature on knowledge audit process with the aim to understand the process, the data gathering techniques employed and the roles of knowledge audit. It aims to report the research gaps and propose directions for future research in this domain. A comprehensive three-stage method for extracting, analyzing and reporting the literature-based findings was applied in analyzing the literature survey. The literature survey is based on a search for the keywords “knowledge audit”, “knowledge audit process”, “knowledge audit output” and “knowledge audit roles”, first on the ISI Web of Knowledge online database, followed by Association of Information Systems basket of top journals and other reputable literatures. The paper concludes with an understanding on how knowledge audit is conducted, the data gathering techniques used and its contributions to the organization. However no literature was found on knowledge audit practices for inter-organization. Future research on how knowledge audit could be extended for inter-organization is suggested at the end of the paper. However, this paper only covers literature that discussed in depth the knowledge audit process published in certain journals. Never the less, it is believed that the findings provide a valuable understanding of the current situation in this research field

    Health Diagnosis of Communities of Practices (CoPs)

    The purpose of this study is to provide a multi-level framework to diagnose the structural healthiness of CoPs and present a new metric, Bottleneck Impact Score (BIS), to measure the seriousness of bottlenecks in knowledge sharing activities among CoPs members. After analyzing knowledge sharing activities of 4,414 members from 59 CoPs, we confirm that while only a small number of CoP members actively engage in both transferring and receiving knowledge, most experts are not core players and they are reluctant to share their knowledge with others. We also find that only few CoPs can be classified as knowledge “sharing” community while most of CoPs suffer from inactive participation of employees with high expertise and are diagnosed as having at least one of master-apprenticeship and knowledge drain bottlenecks. Interestingly, we also find that CoPs members in field division such as Iron&Steel, Rolling, and Maintenance department more actively participate in knowledge sharing than CoPs members in Staff department. Finally, BISs are used to measure and compare the seriousness of six different types of bottlenecks in CoPs and departments

    Mining email to leverage knowledge networks in organizations

    There is nothing new about the notion that in today‟s knowledge driven economy, knowledge is the key strategic asset for competitive advantage in an organization. Also, we have learned that knowledge is residing in the organization‟s informal network. Hence, to leverage business performance from a knowledge management perspective, focus should be on the informal network. A means to analyze and develop the informal network is by applying Social Network Analysis (SNA). By capturing network data in an organization, bottlenecks in knowledge processes can be identified and managed. But where network data can easily be captured by means of a survey in small organizations, in larger organizations this process is too complex and time-intensive. Mining e-mail data is more and more regarded as a suitable alternative as it automates the data capturing process and enables longitudinal research possibilities. An increasing amount of tools for mining e-mail data into social networks is available, but the question remains to what extent these tools are also capable of conducting knowledge network analysis: the analysis of networks from a knowledge perspective. It is argued that in order to perform knowledge network analysis, a tool is required that is capable of analyzing both the header data and the body data of e-mail messages. In this paper two e-mail mining tools are elaborated. One focuses on the analysis of e-mail header data and the other focuses on the analysis of e-mail body data. Both tools are embedded in their theoretical background and compared to other e-mail mining tools that address e-mail header data or e-mail body data. The aim of this paper is two-fold. The paper primarily aims at providing a detailed discussion of both tools. Continuing, from the in-depth review, the integration of both tools is proposed, concluding towards a single new tool that is capable of analyzing both e-mail header and body data. It is argued how this new tool nurtures the application of knowledge network analysis

    Investigating the Knowledge Management Infrastructures of SBMU-Affiliated Libraries

    Introduction: Increasing productivity in academic libraries can be due to knowledge management. The successful implementation of knowledge management requires appropriate infrastructures. In this study, to determine the level of readiness of SBMU-affiliated libraries and to implement knowledge management, the infrastructure of the management approach, organizational culture, human resources, organizational structure, and information technology has been examined.   Methods: The descriptive-survey research method was used to determine the status of the infrastructures studied to obtain the opinions of 58 librarians working in the libraries of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. The data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire. The opinions of 10 experts obtained to analyze the qualitative validity. Content validity‏ ratio (CVR) was calculated to analyze the quantitative content validity, content validity index (CVI), and the validity of each item, which was considered 62% and 79%, respectively. Cronbach's alpha was also used to measure reliability, which was 0.92, indicating that reliability is appropriate. A 5-point Likert scale was used to weigh a 50- item questionnaire.   Results: The mean obtained for the infrastructures of the management approach was 2.72, organizational structure 2.66, organizational culture 3.13, human resources 3.26, and technology 3.21, respectively.   Conclusion: The status of the two infrastructures of management approach and organizational structure was undesirable, and the three infrastructures of organizational culture, human resources, and technology were at a moderate level. Consequently, these infrastructures need investment and exceptional attention to provide a suitable platform for the implementation of knowledge management in the SBMU-affiliated libraries
