    Mungo and StMungo: tools for typechecking protocols in Java

    We present two tools that support static typechecking of communica- tion protocols in Java. Mungo associates Java classes with typestate specifications, which are state machines defining permitted sequences of method calls. StMungo translates a communication protocol specified in the Scribble protocol description language into a typestate specification for each role in the protocol by following the message sequence. Role implementations can be typechecked by Mungo to ensure that they satisfy their protocols, and then compiled as usual with javac. We demonstrate the Scribble, StMungo and Mungo toolchain via a typechecked POP3 client that can communicate with a real-world POP3 server

    Type Classes for Lightweight Substructural Types

    Linear and substructural types are powerful tools, but adding them to standard functional programming languages often means introducing extra annotations and typing machinery. We propose a lightweight substructural type system design that recasts the structural rules of weakening and contraction as type classes; we demonstrate this design in a prototype language, Clamp. Clamp supports polymorphic substructural types as well as an expressive system of mutable references. At the same time, it adds little additional overhead to a standard Damas-Hindley-Milner type system enriched with type classes.     On duality relations for session types

    Session types are a type formalism used to describe communication protocols over private session channels. Each participant in a binary session owns one endpoint of a session channel. A key notion is that of duality: the endpoints of a session channel should have dual session types in order to guarantee communication safety. Duality relations have been independently defined in different ways and different works, without considering their effect on the type system. In this paper we systematically study the existing duality relations and some new ones, and compare them in order to understand their expressiveness. The outcome is that those relations are split into two groups, one related to the na¨ıve inductive duality, and the other related to a notion of mutual compliance, which we borrow from the literature on contracts for web-services

    Parameterized Concurrent Multi-Party Session Types

    Session types have been proposed as a means of statically verifying implementations of communication protocols. Although prior work has been successful in verifying some classes of protocols, it does not cope well with parameterized, multi-actor scenarios with inherent asynchrony. For example, the sliding window protocol is inexpressible in previously proposed session type systems. This paper describes System-A, a new typing language which overcomes many of the expressiveness limitations of prior work. System-A explicitly supports asynchrony and parallelism, as well as multiple forms of parameterization.     Characteristic Bisimulation for Higher-Order Session Processes

    Characterising contextual equivalence is a long-standing issue for higher-order (process) languages. In the setting of a higher-order pi-calculus with sessions, we develop characteristic bisimilarity, a typed bisimilarity which fully characterises contextual equivalence. To our knowledge, ours is the first characterisation of its kind. Using simple values inhabiting (session) types, our approach distinguishes from untyped methods for characterising contextual equivalence in higher-order processes: we show that observing as inputs only a precise finite set of higher-order values suffices to reason about higher-order session processes. We demonstrate how characteristic bisimilarity can be used to justify optimisations in session protocols with mobile code communication

    A New Linear Logic for Deadlock-Free Session-Typed Processes

    The π -calculus, viewed as a core concurrent programming language, has been used as the target of much research on type systems for concurrency. In this paper we propose a new type system for deadlock-free session-typed π -calculus processes, by integrating two separate lines of work. The first is the propositions-as-types approach by Caires and Pfenning, which provides a linear logic foundation for session types and guarantees deadlock-freedom by forbidding cyclic process connections. The second is Kobayashi’s approach in which types are annotated with priorities so that the type system can check whether or not processes contain genuine cyclic dependencies between communication operations. We combine these two techniques for the first time, and define a new and more expressive variant of classical linear logic with a proof assignment that gives a session type system with Kobayashi-style priorities. This can be seen in three ways: (i) as a new linear logic in which cyclic structures can be derived and a CYCLE -elimination theorem generalises CUT -elimination; (ii) as a logically-based session type system, which is more expressive than Caires and Pfenning’s; (iii) as a logical foundation for Kobayashi’s system, bringing it into the sphere of the propositions-as-types paradigm

    On Asynchronous Session Semantics

    This paper studies a behavioural theory of the π-calculus with session types under the fundamental principles of the practice of distributed computing — asynchronous communication which is order-preserving inside each connection (session), augmented with asynchronous inspection of events (message arrivals). A new theory of bisimulations is introduced, distinct from either standard asynchronous or synchronous bisimilarity, accurately capturing the semantic nature of session-based asynchronously communicating processes augmented with event primitives. The bisimilarity coincides with the reduction-closed barbed congruence. We examine its properties and compare them with existing semantics. Using the behavioural theory, we verify that the program transformation of multithreaded into event-driven session based processes, using Lauer-Needham duality, is type and semantic preserving

    Polymorphic Endpoint Types for Copyless Message Passing

    We present PolySing#, a calculus that models process interaction based on copyless message passing, in the style of Singularity OS. We equip the calculus with a type system that accommodates polymorphic endpoint types, which are a variant of polymorphic session types, and we show that well-typed processes are free from faults, leaks, and communication errors. The type system is essentially linear, although linearity alone may leave room for scenarios where well-typed processes leak memory.     Behavioural Types for Actor Systems

    Recent mainstream programming languages such as Erlang or Scala have renewed the interest on the Actor model of concurrency. However, the literature on the static analysis of actor systems is still lacking of mature formal methods. In this paper we present a minimal actor calculus that takes as primitive the basic constructs of Scala's Actors API. More precisely, actors can send asynchronous messages, process received messages according to a pattern matching mechanism, and dynamically create new actors, whose scope can be extruded by passing actor names as message parameters. Drawing inspiration from the linear types and session type theories developed for process calculi, we put forward a behavioural type system that addresses the key issues of an actor calculus. We then study a safety property dealing with the determinism of finite actor com- munication. More precisely, we show that well typed and balanced actor systems are (i) deadlock-free and (ii) any message will eventually be handled by the target actor, and dually no actor will indefinitely wait for an expected messag
