    A pose acquisition system operating in space must be able to perform well in a variety of different applications including automated guidance and inspections tasks with many different, but known objects. Since the space station is being designed with automation in mind, there will be CAD models of all the objects, including the station itself. The construction of vision models and procedures directly from the CAD models is the goal of this project. The system that is being designed and implementing must convert CAD models to vision models, predict visible features from a given view point from the vision models, construct view classes representing views of the objects, and use the view class model thus derived to rapidly determine the pose of the object from single images and/or stereo pairs

    In this paper, we present a sketch modelling system which we call Stilton. The program resembles a desktop VRML browser, allowing a user to navigate a three-dimensional model in a perspective projection, or panoramic photographs, which the program maps onto the scene as a `floor' and `walls'. We place an imaginary two-dimensional drawing plane in front of the user, and any geometric information that user sketches onto this plane may be reconstructed to form solid objects through an optimization process. We show how the system can be used to reconstruct geometry from panoramic images, or to add new objects to an existing model. While panoramic imaging can greatly assist with some aspects of site familiarization and qualitative assessment of a site, without the addition of some foreground geometry they offer only limited utility in a design context. Therefore, we suggest that the system may be of use in `just-in-time' CAD recovery of complex environments, such as shop floors, or construction sites, by recovering objects through sketched overlays, where other methods such as automatic line-retrieval may be impossible. The result of using the system in this manner is the `sketching of space' - sketching out a volume around the user - and once the geometry has been recovered, the designer is free to quickly sketch design ideas into the newly constructed context, or analyze the space around them. Although end-user trials have not, as yet, been undertaken we believe that this implementation may afford a user-interface that is both accessible and robust, and that the rapid growth of pen-computing devices will further stimulate activity in this area

    A Laminar Cortical Model for 3D Perception of Slanted and Curved Surfaces and of 2D Images: Developement, attention, and Bistability

    A model of laminar visual cortical dynamics proposes how 3D boundary and surface representations of slated and curved 3D objects and 2D images arise. The 3D boundary representations emerge from interactions between non-classical horizontal receptive field interactions with intracorticcal and intercortical feedback circuits. Such non-classical interactions contextually disambiguate classical receptive field responses to ambiguous visual cues using cells that are sensitive to angles and disparity gradients with cortical areas V1 and V2. These cells are all variants of bipole grouping cells. Model simulations show how horizontal connections can develop selectively to angles, how slanted surfaces can activate 3D boundary representations that are sensitive to angles and disparity gradients, how 3D filling-in occurs across slanted surfaces, how a 2D Necker cube image can be represented in 3D, and how bistable Necker cuber percepts occur. The model also explains data about slant aftereffects and 3D neon color spreading.     Line tracking algorithm for scribbled drawings

    This paper describes a line tracking algorithm that may be used to extract lines from paper based scribbles. The proposed algorithm improves the performance of existing sparse-pixel line tracking techniques that are used in vectorization by introducing perceptual saliency and Kalman filtering concepts to the line tracking. Furthermore, an adaptive sampling size is used such that it is possible to adjust the size of the tracking step to reflect the stroke curvature.peer-reviewe

    Recovery of 3-D objects with multiple curved surfaces from 2-D contours

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Inference of 3-D shape from 2-D contours in a single image is an important problem in machine vision. Often, techniques to solve this problem examine each surface in the scene separately whereas our perception of their shapes clearly depends on the interplay between them as well. In this paper, we describe a technique that attempts to recover the shapes of all the surfaces of an object simultaneously, though it is limited to objects made of zero-Gaussian curvature surfaces. Our technique is based on an analysis of three kinds of symmetries defined in the paper and the constraints that derive from them, and from other boundaries. This technique uses some of the constraints developed in an earlier paper that was limited to examining a zero-Gaussian curvature surface cut by parallel planes. This restriction has been removed here and the constraints have been reformulated to allow integration of constraints from all the neighboring surfaces. Results on some complex examples are shown
