Lightning detection in planetary atmospheres

Lightning in planetary atmospheres is now a well-established concept. Here we discuss the available detection techniques for, and observations of, planetary lightning by spacecraft, planetary landers and, increasingly, sophisticated terrestrial radio telescopes. Future space missions carrying lightning-related instrumentation are also summarised, specifically the European ExoMars mission and Japanese Akatsuki mission to Venus, which could both yield lightning observations in 2016.Comment: Accepted for publication in Weather as part of a special issue on Advances in Lightning Detectio

Determining distance to lightning strokes from a single station

Electronic system can rapidly determine location of lightning strikes occurring within 30 km range. Longer distances are also determined, but with reduced accuracy. Exploring Locus of Control in Offender Cognition and Recidivism Paradigms

Working with four Washington State county jails to administer surveys to currently incarcerated inmates, we investigated locus of control and beliefs in the likelihood of continued legal involvement as possible antecedents to criminal recidivism. The surveys examined whether there was any connection between legal involvement frequency and the externalization of locus of control. We investigated external locus of control with specific respect to involvement with the law, the prospect of future incarceration, and feelings concerning the overall cause of original and/or sustained legal involvement utilizing the Revised Causal Dimension Scale (McAuley, Duncan, & Russell, 1992). We identified statistically significant interactions between these variables and built a significant predictive path model beginning with elements of locus of control and terminating on increased legal involvement

This Why Files article examines lightning. Lightning is the second deadliest storm-related hazard in the United States. Topics covered include: what lightning is, how it injures and kills, and what has been learned in the past few years from research on nature's electricity.
