Level Set Methods for Stochastic Discontinuity Detection in Nonlinear Problems
Stochastic physical problems governed by nonlinear conservation laws are
challenging due to solution discontinuities in stochastic and physical space.
In this paper, we present a level set method to track discontinuities in
stochastic space by solving a Hamilton-Jacobi equation. By introducing a speed
function that vanishes at discontinuities, the iso-zero of the level set
problem coincide with the discontinuities of the conservation law. The level
set problem is solved on a sequence of successively finer grids in stochastic
space. The method is adaptive in the sense that costly evaluations of the
conservation law of interest are only performed in the vicinity of the
discontinuities during the refinement stage. In regions of stochastic space
where the solution is smooth, a surrogate method replaces expensive evaluations
of the conservation law. The proposed method is tested in conjunction with
different sets of localized orthogonal basis functions on simplex elements, as
well as frames based on piecewise polynomials conforming to the level set
function. The performance of the proposed method is compared to existing
adaptive multi-element generalized polynomial chaos methods
Cluster, Classify, Regress: A General Method For Learning Discountinous Functions
This paper presents a method for solving the supervised learning problem in
which the output is highly nonlinear and discontinuous. It is proposed to solve
this problem in three stages: (i) cluster the pairs of input-output data
points, resulting in a label for each point; (ii) classify the data, where the
corresponding label is the output; and finally (iii) perform one separate
regression for each class, where the training data corresponds to the subset of
the original input-output pairs which have that label according to the
classifier. It has not yet been proposed to combine these 3 fundamental
building blocks of machine learning in this simple and powerful fashion. This
can be viewed as a form of deep learning, where any of the intermediate layers
can itself be deep. The utility and robustness of the methodology is
illustrated on some toy problems, including one example problem arising from
simulation of plasma fusion in a tokamak.Comment: 12 files,6 figure
A continuous analogue of the tensor-train decomposition
We develop new approximation algorithms and data structures for representing
and computing with multivariate functions using the functional tensor-train
(FT), a continuous extension of the tensor-train (TT) decomposition. The FT
represents functions using a tensor-train ansatz by replacing the
three-dimensional TT cores with univariate matrix-valued functions. The main
contribution of this paper is a framework to compute the FT that employs
adaptive approximations of univariate fibers, and that is not tied to any
tensorized discretization. The algorithm can be coupled with any univariate
linear or nonlinear approximation procedure. We demonstrate that this approach
can generate multivariate function approximations that are several orders of
magnitude more accurate, for the same cost, than those based on the
conventional approach of compressing the coefficient tensor of a tensor-product
basis. Our approach is in the spirit of other continuous computation packages
such as Chebfun, and yields an algorithm which requires the computation of
"continuous" matrix factorizations such as the LU and QR decompositions of
vector-valued functions. To support these developments, we describe continuous
versions of an approximate maximum-volume cross approximation algorithm and of
a rounding algorithm that re-approximates an FT by one of lower ranks. We
demonstrate that our technique improves accuracy and robustness, compared to TT
and quantics-TT approaches with fixed parameterizations, of high-dimensional
integration, differentiation, and approximation of functions with local
features such as discontinuities and other nonlinearities
Differential-Algebraic Equations and Beyond: From Smooth to Nonsmooth Constrained Dynamical Systems
The present article presents a summarizing view at differential-algebraic
equations (DAEs) and analyzes how new application fields and corresponding
mathematical models lead to innovations both in theory and in numerical
analysis for this problem class. Recent numerical methods for nonsmooth
dynamical systems subject to unilateral contact and friction illustrate the
topicality of this development.Comment: Preprint of Book Chapte
Roe Solver with Entropy Corrector for Uncertain Hyperbolic Systems
International audienceThis paper deals with intrusive Galerkin projection methods with Roe-type solver for uncertain hyperbolic systems using a finite volume discretization in physical space and a piecewise continuous representation at the stochastic level. The aim of this paper is to design a cost-effective adaptation of the deterministic Dubois and Mehlman corrector to avoid entropy-violating shocks in the presence of sonic points. The adaptation relies on an estimate of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Galerkin Jacobian matrix of the deterministic system of the stochastic modes of the solution and on a correspondence between these approximate eigenvalues and eigenvectors for the intermediate states considered at the interface. Some indicators are derived to decide where a correction is needed, thereby reducing considerably the computational costs. The effectiveness of the proposed corrector is assessed on the Burgers and Euler equations including sonic points
