Object Contour and Edge Detection with RefineContourNet
A ResNet-based multi-path refinement CNN is used for object contour
detection. For this task, we prioritise the effective utilization of the
high-level abstraction capability of a ResNet, which leads to state-of-the-art
results for edge detection. Keeping our focus in mind, we fuse the high, mid
and low-level features in that specific order, which differs from many other
approaches. It uses the tensor with the highest-levelled features as the
starting point to combine it layer-by-layer with features of a lower
abstraction level until it reaches the lowest level. We train this network on a
modified PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset for object contour detection and evaluate on a
refined PASCAL-val dataset reaching an excellent performance and an Optimal
Dataset Scale (ODS) of 0.752. Furthermore, by fine-training on the BSDS500
dataset we reach state-of-the-art results for edge-detection with an ODS of
0.824.Comment: Keywords: Object Contour Detection, Edge Detection, Multi-Path

Vagueness, Logic and Use: Four Experimental Studies on Vagueness
Although arguments for and against competing theories of vagueness often appeal to claims about the use of vague predicates by ordinary speakers, such claims are rarely tested. An exception is Bonini et al. (1999), who report empirical results on the use of vague predicates by Italian speakers, and take the results to count in favor of epistemicism. Yet several methodological difficulties mar their experiments; we outline these problems and devise revised experiments that do not show the same results. We then describe three additional empirical studies that investigate further claims in the literature on vagueness: the hypothesis that speakers confuse ‘P’ with ‘definitely P’, the relative persuasiveness of different formulations of the inductive premise of the Sorites, and the interaction of vague predicates with three different forms of negatio
A kernel-based framework for learning graded relations from data
Driven by a large number of potential applications in areas like
bioinformatics, information retrieval and social network analysis, the problem
setting of inferring relations between pairs of data objects has recently been
investigated quite intensively in the machine learning community. To this end,
current approaches typically consider datasets containing crisp relations, so
that standard classification methods can be adopted. However, relations between
objects like similarities and preferences are often expressed in a graded
manner in real-world applications. A general kernel-based framework for
learning relations from data is introduced here. It extends existing approaches
because both crisp and graded relations are considered, and it unifies existing
approaches because different types of graded relations can be modeled,
including symmetric and reciprocal relations. This framework establishes
important links between recent developments in fuzzy set theory and machine
learning. Its usefulness is demonstrated through various experiments on
synthetic and real-world data.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.

A Fuzzy Association Rule Mining Expert-Driven (FARME-D) approach to Knowledge Acquisition
Fuzzy Association Rule Mining Expert-Driven (FARME-D) approach to knowledge acquisition is proposed in this paper as a viable solution to the challenges of rule-based unwieldiness and sharp boundary problem in building a fuzzy rule-based expert system. The fuzzy models were based on domain experts’ opinion about the data description. The proposed approach is committed to modelling of a
compact Fuzzy Rule-Based Expert Systems. It is also aimed at providing a platform for instant update of the knowledge-base in case new knowledge is discovered. The insight to the new approach strategies and underlining assumptions, the structure of FARME-D and its
practical application in medical domain was discussed. Also, the modalities for the validation of the FARME-D approach were discussed
Contour Detection from Deep Patch-level Boundary Prediction
In this paper, we present a novel approach for contour detection with
Convolutional Neural Networks. A multi-scale CNN learning framework is designed
to automatically learn the most relevant features for contour patch detection.
Our method uses patch-level measurements to create contour maps with
overlapping patches. We show the proposed CNN is able to to detect large-scale
contours in an image efficienly. We further propose a guided filtering method
to refine the contour maps produced from large-scale contours. Experimental
results on the major contour benchmark databases demonstrate the effectiveness
of the proposed technique. We show our method can achieve good detection of
both fine-scale and large-scale contours.Comment: IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing 201
