Motor Learning Mechanism on the Neuron Scale

Based on existing data, we wish to put forward a biological model of motor system on the neuron scale. Then we indicate its implications in statistics and learning. Specifically, neuron firing frequency and synaptic strength are probability estimates in essence. And the lateral inhibition also has statistical implications. From the standpoint of learning, dendritic competition through retrograde messengers is the foundation of conditional reflex and grandmother cell coding. And they are the kernel mechanisms of motor learning and sensory motor integration respectively. Finally, we compare motor system with sensory system. In short, we would like to bridge the gap between molecule evidences and computational models.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Job rotation as a learning mechanism.

    Get PDF
This article analyzes the costs and benefits of job rotation as a mechanism with which the firm can learn about the employees' productivities and the profitability of different jobs or activities. I compare job rotation to an assignment policy where employees specialize in one job along their career. The gains from adopting a job rotation policy are larger when there is more prior uncertainty about employees and activities. I argue that this firm learning theory fits the existing evidence on rotation better than alternative explanations based on employee motivation and employee learning.

On Using a Support Vector Machine in Learning Feed-Forward Control

For mechatronic motion systems, the performance increases significantly if, besides feedback control, also feed-forward control is used. This feed-forward part should contain the (stable part of the) inverse of the plant. This inverse is difficult to obtain if non-linear dynamics are present. To overcome this problem, learning feed-forward control can be applied. The properties of the learning mechanism are of importance in this setting. In the paper, a support vector machine is proposed as the learning mechanism. It is shown that this mechanism has several advantages over other learning techniques when applied to learning feed-forward control. The method is tested with simulation

Behavior based architecture gives robot fast and reliable action. If there are many behaviors in robot, behavior coordination is needed. Subsumption architecture is behavior coordination method that give quick and robust response. Learning mechanism improve robot’s performance in handling uncertainty. Q learning is popular reinforcement learning method that has been used in robot learning because it is simple, convergent and off policy. In this paper, Q learning will be used as learning mechanism for obstacle avoidance behavior in autonomous robot navigation. Learning rate of Q learning affect robot’s performance in learning phase. As the result, Q learning algorithm is successfully implemented in a physical robot with its imperfect environment

Fast human detection for video event recognition

Human body detection, which has become a research hotspot during the last two years, can be used in many video content analysis applications. This paper investigates a fast human detection method for volume based video event detection. Compared with other object detection systems, human body detection brings more challenge due to threshold problems coming from a wide range of dynamic properties. Motivated by approaches successfully introduced in facial recognition applications, it adapts and adopts feature extraction and machine learning mechanism to classify certain areas from video frames. This method starts from the extraction of Haar-like features from large numbers of sample images for well-regulated feature distribution and is followed by AdaBoost learning and detection algorithm for pattern classification. Experiment on the classifier proves the Haar-like feature based machine learning mechanism can provide a fast and steady result for human body detection and can be further applied to reduce negative aspects in human modelling and analysis for volume based event detection
