Learning Schemes for Power System Protection

    Get PDF
In this paper, learning algorithms are leveraged to advance power system protection. Advancements in power system protection have come in different forms such as the development of new control strategies and the introduction of a new system architecture such as a microgrid. In this paper, we propose two learning schemes to make accurate predictions and optimal decisions related to power system protection and microgrid control. First, we present a neural network approach to learn a classifier that can predict stable reconnection timings for an islanded sub-network. Second, we present a learning-based control scheme for power system protection based on the policy rollout. In the proposed scheme, we incorporate online simulation using the commercial PSS/e simulator. Optimal decisions are obtained in real time to prevent cascading failures as well as maximize the load served. We validate our methods with the dynamics simulator and test cases RTS-96 and Poland

Wide Area Power System Protection Using a Learning Vector Quantization Network

This paper presents a wide area monitoring and protection technique based on a learning vector quantization (LVQ) neural network. Phasor measurements of the power network buses are monitored continuously by a LVQ network in order to alert the control room operators of possible faults. The proposed scheme could be used in a wide area monitored network to provide remedial action when primary local protection schemes for transmission lines fail to function. This technique could also be extended to the actuation of the secondary protection schemes, hence, preserving the integrity of the power network especially when the faults are spreading over a wide area network to the other areas of the system. The scheme has been applied to a two-area power system in this paper and the LVQ results show that it is a promising scheme for system protection against partial or total blackouts or brown outs

PyProD: A Machine Learning-Friendly Platform for Protection Analytics in Distribution Systems

This paper introduces PyProD, a Python-based machine learning (ML)-compatible test-bed for evaluating the efficacy of protection schemes in electric distribution grids. This testbed is designed to bridge the gap between conventional power distribution grid analysis and growing capability of ML-based decision making algorithms, in particular in the context of protection system design and configuration. PyProD is shown to be capable of facilitating efficient design and evaluation of ML-based decision making algorithms for protection devices in the future electric distribution grid, in which many distributed energy resources and pro-sumers permeate the system

Attributes of Big Data Analytics for Data-Driven Decision Making in Cyber-Physical Power Systems

Big data analytics is a virtually new term in power system terminology. This concept delves into the way a massive volume of data is acquired, processed, analyzed to extract insight from available data. In particular, big data analytics alludes to applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning techniques, data mining techniques, time-series forecasting methods. Decision-makers in power systems have been long plagued by incapability and weakness of classical methods in dealing with large-scale real practical cases due to the existence of thousands or millions of variables, being time-consuming, the requirement of a high computation burden, divergence of results, unjustifiable errors, and poor accuracy of the model. Big data analytics is an ongoing topic, which pinpoints how to extract insights from these large data sets. The extant article has enumerated the applications of big data analytics in future power systems through several layers from grid-scale to local-scale. Big data analytics has many applications in the areas of smart grid implementation, electricity markets, execution of collaborative operation schemes, enhancement of microgrid operation autonomy, management of electric vehicle operations in smart grids, active distribution network control, district hub system management, multi-agent energy systems, electricity theft detection, stability and security assessment by PMUs, and better exploitation of renewable energy sources. The employment of big data analytics entails some prerequisites, such as the proliferation of IoT-enabled devices, easily-accessible cloud space, blockchain, etc. This paper has comprehensively conducted an extensive review of the applications of big data analytics along with the prevailing challenges and solutions

Constrained Bayesian Active Learning of Interference Channels in Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, a sequential probing method for interference constraint learning is proposed to allow a centralized Cognitive Radio Network (CRN) accessing the frequency band of a Primary User (PU) in an underlay cognitive scenario with a designed PU protection specification. The main idea is that the CRN probes the PU and subsequently eavesdrops the reverse PU link to acquire the binary ACK/NACK packet. This feedback indicates whether the probing-induced interference is harmful or not and can be used to learn the PU interference constraint. The cognitive part of this sequential probing process is the selection of the power levels of the Secondary Users (SUs) which aims to learn the PU interference constraint with a minimum number of probing attempts while setting a limit on the number of harmful probing-induced interference events or equivalently of NACK packet observations over a time window. This constrained design problem is studied within the Active Learning (AL) framework and an optimal solution is derived and implemented with a sophisticated, accurate and fast Bayesian Learning method, the Expectation Propagation (EP). The performance of this solution is also demonstrated through numerical simulations and compared with modified versions of AL techniques we developed in earlier work.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, submitted to IEEE JSTSP Special Issue on Machine Learning for Cognition in Radio Communications and Rada
