    Project based learning on industrial informatics: applying IoT to urban garden

PBL is one of the best ways to promote self-learning and simultaneously boost motivation. In this paper, we present our experience introducing project-based learning in the last year subject. New Internet of Things (IoT) topic allows us to carry out complete projects, integrating different technologies and tools. Moreover, the selection of open-source and standard free technologies makes easy and cheap the access to hardware and software platforms used. We carefully have picked communication, data management, and programming tools that we think would be attractive to our students. They can start making fast prototyping with little initial skills and, at the same time, these are serious and popular tools widely used in the industry. In this paper, we report on the design of a project-based learning for our course and the impact this has on the student satisfaction and motivation.     Application of a flipped classroom for model-based learning in electronics

    This paper investigates the effectiveness of the flipped classroom methodology to build conceptual knowledge mentalmodels. In particular, it examines the learning process and outcomes of 40 students of a course on Physical Electronics inthe last year of a bachelor’s degree program in Physics, for which specific educational resources have been developed toimplement the flipped classroom. Among them, non-interactive resources are better to present topics and ideas, whereasinteractive resources are more useful to establish links between them to build and check the models. The examined dataentail grades, laboratory reports and rubrics, outcomes of learning activities, and direct observation, showing that theflipped classroom improves the construction of mental models, providing teaching resources where the topics and mainideas are presented, developed and exercised, and allowing students to establish links to build and check the models.Furthermore, this strategy increases the personal commitment of the students, fostering autonomy and cooperation withpeers, all of which makes it an effective pedagogical tool to build knowledge mental models

    Learning achievemen ts using a pbl - based methodology in an introductory electronic course

    Teaching electronics in an introductory course is classically implemented by means of theoretical classes to settle the basics of analog and digital electronics. This approach has shown not to be much attractive, especially on a global course targeted for many different students, not specifically interested in electronics. A new course has been developed, based on a top-down learning strategy and the implementation of a pbl-based experience. This course has been held since 2011, with very good results, in terms of academic achievement and interest shown by the students. Results are presented,showing the success obtained with this methodology

    An Applied Electromagnetics Course with a Conceiving-Designing-Implementing-Operating Approach in Engineering Education

    This paper describes and discusses the implementation of a project-based undergraduate course on applied electromagnetics in electronics engineering with a conceiving-designing-implementing-operating (CDIO) approach involving active project-based learning (PBL). The course, which requires a combination of mathematical and physics concepts for its completion, allows students to understand the principles of electromagnetic transmission theory in wireless communication systems. This paper presents the course proposal, its project description, and results hinting at the relationship with the CDIO process. The proposed projects allow students to engage in core concepts such as complex vectors, Maxwell’s equations, boundary conditions, Poynting\u27s theorem, uniform plane waves, reflection and transmission of waves, waveguides, cavity resonators, and computer-assisted design. The proposed methodology results suggest that students lowered their perception of the difficulty of the course, and most students recognized a better learning process of the core concepts for this course. In addition, students’ final course grades showed an average improvement of approximately 6% compared with the final grades of other groups with different methodologies

    Creating project-based learning in software

    BACKGROUND : Project Based Learning (PBL) allows students to learn by doing hands on work and thus also again practical skills. Therefore going to software simulation may seem like a backwards step. However, the opportunity presented itself to create a unit on Artificial intelligence (AI). This lends itself it a software approach. An added benefit was the opportunity to create a PBL AI unit for both Engineering and IT students.PURPOSE : Can Project Based Learning be improved with dedicated, specifically written, software design?DESIGN/METHOD : After introducing a dedicated software package the student marks and student feedback for the AI unit for a few years before the package introduction until the most recent year was analysed. In the student surveys, 2 key questions where examined: unit material quality and feedback to students. Student comments were also studied.RESULTS : Student surveys gave a consistently high mark for unit’s material and student marks seems consistent as well but favourable comments increased. The most significant result was that the students’ thoughts about the project feedback had increased significantly, probably due to the inbuilt feedback system in the dedicated software package.CONCLUSIONS : With an appropriate subject matter a dedicated software package can help students in PBL. Student enjoyment increased which, in turn, increased their motivation

    Project-based learning in a mechanical engineering course: A new proposal based on student's views

    The evolution of learning in higher education is nowadays evident. Several discussions and studies have been performed about new methodologies that can disrupt the way the classes are taught in universities. In this context, Project-Based Learning (PBL) is the most emphasized. In the Mechanical Engineering course at the University of Minho (UM), the Integration Project (IP) courses apply a PBL methodology, being these classes the differentiating element of the Integrated Master in Mechanical Engineering (IMME) compared with other Portuguese universities. However, even if the innovative aspect of this approach is recognized nationally, the opinions between students and Professors, about the structure and organization of this class, are still divided. In that sense, this work presents a new proposal for the IP courses in which the opinion of students and successful models implemented in international universities are considered. This study analyses the best PBL methodologies implemented in Engineering courses and presents a PBL model actually implemented at the IMME. This information is combined with the student's views obtained from a survey conducted at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM), regarding the actual PBL model. Through this study, a new proposal for the IP courses is presented. This proposal intends to provide an effective answer to the necessity of the students, using successful tools and methodologies to improve the teaching and learning process in the IMME course.
