"This report was the second update of a study originally published in 1976 which provided occupational mortality statistics for Washington State for 1950 through 1971. This current report covered 588,090 white male deaths from 1950 through 1989 and 88,071 white female deaths from 1974 trough 1989, exclusive of 134,569 housewives. For each of 219 occupational categories for males and each of 68 occupational categories for females, a cause of death analysis was provided. Information on male and female occupations ranked by proportional mortality ratio within selected causes of death was also provided in tabular form. Commentary was provided for each of the tables. The association between occupational exposure to electric and magnetic fields and leukemia reported in that original analysis was confirmed. Data were provided on microfiche." - NIOSHTIC-2"Order no. 00913725.""March 1995."Includes index. Also available via the World Wide Web

Application of Genetic Algorithms to Solve MTSP Problems with Priority (Case Study at the Jakarta Street Lighting Service)

Transportation is one thing that is very important and is the highest cost in the supply chain. One way to reduce these costs is to optimize vehicle routes. The Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem (MTSP) and Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) are models that have been extensively researched to optimize vehicle routes. In its development based on actual events in the real world, some priorities must be visited first in optimizing vehicle routes. Several studies on MTSP and CVRP models have been conducted with exact solutions and algorithms. In a real case in the Jakarta City Street Lighting Section, the problem of determining the route in three shifts is a crucial problem that must be resolved to increase worker productivity to improve services. Services in MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) installation and maintenance activities for general street lights and priority is given to light points that require replacement. Because, in this case, the delivery capacity is not taken into account, the priority of the lights visited is random, and the number of street light points is enormous, in this study, we use the MTSP method with priority and solve by a genetic algorithm assisted by the nearest neighbor algorithm. From the resolution of this problem, it was found that the travel time reduction was 32 % for shift 1, 24 % for shift 2, and 23 % for shift 3. Of course, this time reduction will impact worker productivity so that MCB installation can be done faster for all lights and replace a dead lamp

Monitoring and motivating outworkers : the case of the AMP and the sale of industrial life insurance 1905-1940

The development of labor management practices in the financial services sector provides an interesting insight into how problems associated with agency issues were overcome. Within financial institutions and other white collar occupations, the use of internal labor markets emerged as an effective means of both controlling and motivating employees. However such management techniques were only effective in cases where work tasks could be internalized. The business of some types of organizations necessitated a division of work tasks between those undertaken within the office and those undertaken outside the office. The management and sale of insurance products is a case in point. This paper explores the development of processes implemented to resolve a specific type of labor management issue, namely the control of workers under conditions of uncertainty. Using the example of the Australian Mutual Provident (Australia\u27s largest life insurer), it analyses how and why particular work relations procedures were developed. <br /

From a "Gin Palace" to a "King's Palace?" The Evolution of the Music Hall in Preston c1840-1914

This thesis adopts a chronological approach to the development of Preston's music halls between 1840 -1914. It was partly inspired by the apparent lack of similar academic work having been undertaken. Nevertheless comparable studies of other provincial towns have provided valuable models against which the Preston experience can be tested. Through documentary analysis, based particularly on the local press and music hall trade press, the principal aims are to place Preston within the historiography of the music hail genre; to evaluate the evolution and growth of the Preston Victorian and Edwardian music hall and its relationship with rival forms of entertainment and to assess the impact of reformers on the social class composition of audiences in their quest for moral and legal reform. Research has revealed several significant findings: Preston was at the forefront of music hall development and by 1839 its first concert hall was established. The movement against music hall was strengthened because of the local influence of Joseph Livesey and his followers who advocated total abstinence and promoted counter-attractions. Nevertheless the 1860s and early 70s was a particular boom time for Preston Music Hall with the opening of several new concert halls. Preston broadly follows the national pattern of growth but with a notable exception: there was no major variety theatre or properly constructed pub music hall in the town between 1889-1905. The years between 1905 and 1914 represents a second period of music-hall resurgence with three established variety theatres filling the void in music hall provision. However, a suggestion of a surplus of seats for music hall coincides with the opening of Broadhead's vast King's Palace Theatre in 1913 and rival cinema entertainment. Part of the Broadhead syndicate's management philosophy was that in case of poor box office returns their music halls could be re-designed for use as factories. Neither Preston theatre found this adaptation necessary and both survived to present the genre of inclusive music hall entertainment until the 1950s
