    A description is given of the physics of electromagnetic scattering from the sea and a guideline is presented to relate an observable (such as the radar cross section) to the hydrodynamics or physical properties of the sea. As specific examples of the interdisciplinary science of electromagnetics and geophysical oceanography, the physics is discussed in connection with data provided by three instruments: namely, the scatterometer, the altimeter, and the imaging radar. The data provided by each instrument are discussed in context with specular point and Bragg scattering theories. Finally, the degrading effect of extraneous sources of noise is discussed as a limiting mechanism of the accuracy of the ocean surface measurement

    Radar imaging mechanism of marine sand waves at very low grazing angle illumination caused by unique hydrodynamic interactions

    The investigations carried out between 2002 and 2004 during six field experiments within the Operational Radar and Optical Mapping in monitoring hydrodynamic, morphodynamic and environmental parameters for coastal management (OROMA) project aimed to improve the effectiveness of new remote sensing monitoring technologies such as shipborne imaging radars in coastal waters. The coastal monitoring radar of the GKSS Research Center, Geesthacht, Germany, is based on a Kelvin Hughes RSR 1000 X band (9.42 GHz) vertical (VV) polarized river radar and was mounted on board the research vessel Ludwig Prandtl during the experiments in the Lister Tief, a tidal inlet of the German Bight in the North Sea. The important progress realized in this investigation is the availability of calibrated X band radar data. Another central point of the study is to demonstrate the applicability of the quasi-specular scattering theory in combination with the weak hydrodynamic interaction theory for the radar imaging mechanism of the seabed. Radar data have been taken at very low grazing angles ≤2.6° of flood and ebb tide–oriented sand wave signatures at the sea surface during ebb tidal current phases. Current speeds perpendicular to the sand wave crest ≤0.6 m s−1 have been measured at wind speeds ≤4.5 m s−1 and water depths ≤25 m. The difference between the maximum measured and simulated normalized radar cross section (NRCS) modulation of the ebb tide–oriented sand wave is 27%. For the flood tide–oriented sand wave, a difference of 21% has been calculated. The difference between the minimum measured and simulated NRCS modulation of the ebb tide–oriented sand wave is 10%, and for the flood tide–oriented sand wave, a value of 43% has been derived. Phases of measured and simulated NRCS modulations correspond to asymmetric sand wave slopes. The results of the simulated NRCS modulation show the qualitative trend but do not always quantitatively match the measured NRCS modulation profiles because the quasi-specular scattering theory at very low grazing angle is a first-order theory

    Analysis of Skylab 2 S193 scatterometer data

    SKYLAB II S193 Scatterometer data for the passes of June 5, 1973, over the Gulf of Mexico and June 6, 1973, over Pacific Hurricane AVA were analyzed. The S193 scatterometer measured the radar cross section of the ocean at 13.9 GHz (Ku-band) as a function of incidence angle. The fields-of-view of the scatterometer were known. In the absence of a large body of Ku-band ocean radar data, the results of the NRL experiments at X-band (8.9 GHz) were used for comparison. The S193 data of June 5, 1973, when a practically uniform wind field was present, show reasonable agreement with the NRL empirical and theoretical models

    Microwave backscattering theory and active remote sensing of the ocean surface

    The status is reviewed of electromagnetic scattering theory relative to the interpretation of microwave remote sensing data acquired from spaceborne platforms over the ocean surface. Particular emphasis is given to the assumptions which are either implicit or explicit in the theory. The multiple scale scattering theory developed during this investigation is extended to non-Gaussian surface statistics. It is shown that the important statistic for the case is the probability density function of the small scale heights conditioned on the large scale slopes; this dependence may explain the anisotropic scattering measurements recently obtained with the AAFE Radscat. It is noted that present surface measurements are inadequate to verify or reject the existing scattering theories. Surface measurements are recommended for qualifying sensor data from radar altimeters and scatterometers. Additional scattering investigations are suggested for imaging type radars employing synthetically generated apertures

    Scattering of Ocean Surfaces in Microwave Remote Sensing by Numerical Solutions of Maxwell Equations

    Sea-surface scattering has long been studied using various analytical methods. These analytical methods include the two scale method (TSM), the small-slope approximation (SSA), the small-perturbation method (SPM), the Advanced Integral Equation Method (AIEM), and the Geometrical/Physical Optics (GO/PO) method. These analytical methods rely on making approximations and assumptions in the modelling process. Some of these assumptions undermine their applicability in a wide range of situations. The input for analytical methods are usually the ocean spectrum. In real implementations, there are 2 sources of uncertainty in such approaches: (1) the analytical methods have a limited range of applicability to the surface scattering problem; the approximations made in these methods are questionable and (2) the various ocean spectra are another source of uncertainty. We earlier applied a numerical method in 3-dimensions (NMM3D) to the scattering problem of soil surfaces. Through comparison with measured data, we established the accuracy and applicability of NMM3D. We see a drastic increase of ocean remote sensing applications in recent years. It is thus feasible to extend NMM3D to the sea-surface scattering problem. Compared to soil, sea water has a much higher permittivity, e.g., 75+61i at L-band. The large permittivity dictates the need for using a much denser mesh for the sea surface. In addition, the root mean square (rms) height of the sea surface is large under moderate to high ocean wind speeds, which requires a large simulation area to account for the influence of long scale wave like gravity waves. Compared to the two-scale model commonly used for the ocean scattering problem, NMM3D does not need an ad-hoc split wavenumber in the ocean spectrum. Combined with a fast computational algorithm, it was shown that NMM3D can produce accurate results compared to measured data like the Aquarius missions. TSM could also match well with Aquarius provided with a pre-selected splitting wavenumber. But it was observed that the result of TSM changes with different splitting wavenumbers. It is seen that TSM is fairly heuristic while NMM3D can serve as an exact method for the scattering problem. On the other hand, through our study of NMM3D, we found that with a fine grid, the final impedance matrix converges slowly and also it becomes hard to perform simulations for a large surface. This has provoked us to (1) solve low convergence problem for a dense mesh and (2) resolve difficulties in simulations of large surfaces. Inspired by the existing impedance boundary condition (IBC) method, we proposed a neighborhood impedance boundary condition (NIBC) method to solve the slow convergence problem caused by the dense grid. Different from IBC where the surface electric field and the surface magnetic field are related locally, NIBC relates the surface electric field to the magnetic field within a preselected bandwidth BW. Through numerical simulations, we found that the condition number can be reduced using NIBC. Errors of NIBC are controllable through changing BW. We applied NIBC to various wind speeds and surface types and found NIBC to be quite accurate when surface currents only suffer an error norm of less than 1%.PHDElectrical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Microwave radar cross sections and Doppler velocities measured in the surf zone

Normalized radar cross section (NRCS) and Doppler velocity are estimated from microwave measurements at near-grazing angles, and in situ fluid velocities are measured with acoustic Doppler velocimeters (ADVs). Joint histograms of radar cross section and Doppler velocity cluster into identifiable distributions. The NRCS values from pixels with large NRCS and high Doppler velocities (>2 m/s) decrease with decreasing bore height to the shoreline, similar to scattering from a cylinder with decreasing radius. The Doppler velocities associated with these regions in the histograms agree well with theoretical wave phase velocities. Radar and ADV measurements of fluid velocities between bore crests have similarly shaped energy density spectra for frequencies above about 0.1 Hz, but energy levels from the radar are an order of magnitude higher than those of the ADV data. Instantaneous interbore Doppler velocities are correlated with ADV measured fluid velocities but are offset by 0.8 m/s. This offset may be due to Bragg wave phase velocities, wind drift, range and azimuth sidelobes, the finite spatial resolution of the radar, and differences between mean flows measured at the surface with radar and flows measured below the surface with ADVs. Shoaling and breaking waves measured through radar grating lobes significantly affect both the Doppler velocities near the edges of the images and the scattering from the rear faces of waves, causing large Doppler velocities to be observed in these regions.This work was funded by the ONR Coastal Geosciences Program

    A curvature-corrected Kirchhoff formulation for radar sea-return from the near vertical

    A new theoretical treatment of the problem of electromagnetic wave scattering from a randomly rough surface is given. A high frequency correction to the Kirchhoff approximation is derived from a field integral equation for a perfectly conducting surface. The correction, which accounts for the effect of local surface curvature, is seen to be identical with an asymptotic form found by Fock (1945) for diffraction by a paraboloid. The corrected boundary values are substituted into the far field Stratton-Chu integral, and average backscattered powers are computed assuming the scattering surface is a homogeneous Gaussian process. Preliminary calculations for K(-4) ocean wave spectrum indicate a resonable modelling of polarization effects near the vertical, theta 45 deg. Correspondence with the results of small perturbation theory is shown

    Detection and characterization of deep water wave breaking using moderate incidence angle microwave backscatter from the sea surface

    Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution May 1990The importance of wave breaking in both microwave remote sensing and air-sea interaction has led to this investigation of the utility of a Ku-Band CW Doppler scatterometer to detect and characterize wave breaking in the open ocean. Field and laboratory measurements by previous authors of microwave backscatter from sharp-crested and breaking waves have shown that these events can exhibit characteristic signatures in moderate incidence angle measurements of the radar cross-section (RCS) and Doppler spectrum. Specifically, breaking events have been associated with polarization independent sea spikes in the RCS accompanied by increased mean frequency and bandwidth of the Doppler spectrum. Simultaneous microwave, video, and environmental measurements were made during the SAXON experiment off Chesapeake Bay in the fall of 1988. The scatterometer was pointed upwind with an incidence angle of 45 degrees and an illumination area small compared to the wavelength of the dominant surface waves. An autocovariance estimation technique was used to produced time series of the RCS, mean Doppler frequency, and Doppler spectral bandwidth in real-time. The joint statistics of the microwave quantities indicative of breaking are used to investigate detection schemes for breaking events identified from the video recordings. The most successful scheme is based on thresholds in both the RCS and the Doppler bandwidth determined from joint distributions for breaking and non-breaking waves. Microwave events consisting of a sea spike in the RCS accompanied by a large bandwidth are associated with the steep forward face of waves in the early stages of breaking. The location of the illumination area with respect to the phase of the breaking wave, the stage of breaking development, and the orientation of an individual crest with respect to the antenna look-direction all influence the detect ability of a breaking event occurring in the vicinity of the radar spot. Since sea spikes tend to occur on the forward face of waves in the process of breaking, the whitecap associated with a given sea spike may occur after the crest of the wave responsible for the sea spike has passed the center of the illumination area. Approximately 70% of the waves which produce whitecaps within a distance of 5m of the bore sight location are successfully identified by a threshold-based detection scheme utilizing both RCS and bandwidth information. The sea spike statistics are investigated as functions of wave field parameters and friction velocity u*. For VV and HH polarization, the frequency of sea spike occurrence and the sea spike contribution to the mean RCS show an approximately cubic dependence on u*, which is consistent with theoretical modelling and various measures of whitecap coverage. The data also suggest that the average RCS of an individual sea spike is not dependent on u*. At high friction velocities (u*≈40-50cms-l), the contribution of sea spikes to the mean RCS is in the range of 5-10% for VV and 10-20% for HH. The wind speed dependence of the percentage of crests producing sea spikes is comparable to that of the fraction of breaking crests reported by previous authors. The percentage of wave crests producing sea spikes is found to vary approximately as (Re*)1.5, where Re* is a Reynolds number based on u* and the dominant surface wavelength. This result agrees with measurements of the degree of wave breaking by. previous authors and is shown to be consistent with a cubic dependence on u *. Models for the probability of wave breaking as a function of moments of the wave height spectrum are compared to our results.     GNSS transpolar earth reflectometry exploriNg system (G-TERN): mission concept

    The global navigation satellite system (GNSS) Transpolar Earth Reflectometry exploriNg system (G-TERN) was proposed in response to ESA's Earth Explorer 9 revised call by a team of 33 multi-disciplinary scientists. The primary objective of the mission is to quantify at high spatio-temporal resolution crucial characteristics, processes and interactions between sea ice, and other Earth system components in order to advance the understanding and prediction of climate change and its impacts on the environment and society. The objective is articulated through three key questions. 1) In a rapidly changing Arctic regime and under the resilient Antarctic sea ice trend, how will highly dynamic forcings and couplings between the various components of the ocean, atmosphere, and cryosphere modify or influence the processes governing the characteristics of the sea ice cover (ice production, growth, deformation, and melt)? 2) What are the impacts of extreme events and feedback mechanisms on sea ice evolution? 3) What are the effects of the cryosphere behaviors, either rapidly changing or resiliently stable, on the global oceanic and atmospheric circulation and mid-latitude extreme events? To contribute answering these questions, G-TERN will measure key parameters of the sea ice, the oceans, and the atmosphere with frequent and dense coverage over polar areas, becoming a “dynamic mapper”of the ice conditions, the ice production, and the loss in multiple time and space scales, and surrounding environment. Over polar areas, the G-TERN will measure sea ice surface elevation (<;10 cm precision), roughness, and polarimetry aspects at 30-km resolution and 3-days full coverage. G-TERN will implement the interferometric GNSS reflectometry concept, from a single satellite in near-polar orbit with capability for 12 simultaneous observations. Unlike currently orbiting GNSS reflectometry missions, the G-TERN uses the full GNSS available bandwidth to improve its ranging measurements. The lifetime would be 2025-2030 or optimally 2025-2035, covering key stages of the transition toward a nearly ice-free Arctic Ocean in summer.
