Slabs, SMS, and Semantic Dependence
What does it mean for one linguistic expression to be ‘short for’ an- other? This paper claims that ‘short for’ constitutes a psychological rather than formal relationship. To develop this definition, I will turn to later Wittgenstein, seeking to adjudicate a debate between Wittgenstein and his interlocutor in Philosophical Investigations: while the interlocutor claims that a builder’s cry of “Slab!” must be ‘short for’ “Bring me a slab,” Wittgenstein calls this view into question. Their debate puts forth two plausible definitions of the ‘short for’ relationship, one based on formal necessity and the other on mental behavior. We will evaluate these definitions by examining a case study which was not available to Wittgenstein: the variable uses of texting abbreviations. Texters’ use of such abbreviations independently from their parent phrases discredits the logical definition of ‘short for’. Through an examination of how non-texters use the same abbreviations, I propose an alternate definition of ‘short for’ centered around the act of mentally translating between one phrase and another

From gr8 to great: Lexical Access to SMS Shortcuts
Many contemporary texts include shortcuts, such as cu or phones4u. The aim of this study was to investigate how the meanings of shortcuts are retrieved. A primed lexical decision paradigm was used with shortcuts and the corresponding words as primes. The target word was associatively related to the meaning of the whole prime (cu/see you – goodbye), to a component of the prime (cu/see you – look), or unrelated to the prime. In Experiment 1, primes were presented for 57 ms. For both word and shortcut primes, responses were faster to targets preceded by whole-related than by unrelated primes. No priming from component-related primes was found. In Experiment 2, the prime duration was 1000 ms. The priming effect seen in Experiment 1 was replicated. Additionally, there was priming from component-related word primes, but not from component-related shortcut primes. These results indicate that the meanings of shortcuts can be retrieved without translating them first into corresponding words
Cyber socialising: emerging genres and registers of intimacy
The popularity of digital media networks for socialising among the youth is well
documented. Much has been written on the emerging norms of textese, the global
shorthand for chatting. However, becoming a proficient user involves more than simply
mastering this code: it requires knowing the appropriate genres and registers for
chatting. This article aims to explore these conventionalised genres and styles from
a discourse analytical perspective. It analyses data collected by first-year students in
the Linguistics Department at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) who use an
application called MXit for chatting with their friends. The analysis shows how, despite
the seemingly unrestrained and non-standard nature of MXit chatting, it is highly conventionalised
and structured and requires a particular ‘register of intimacy’ which relies
heavily on evaluative language and affective markers. However, it is simultaneously
fluid and innovative thereby enabling users to ‘style’ for themselves identities which
combine elements of global sophistication with local situatedness.Web of Scienc

Post-modern ‘languagers’: the effects of texting by university students on three South African languages
The present post-modern society has witnessed a growth spurt in technology, and with the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), mobile text messaging (texting) is now seen as the norm among the youth. For these late-modern languagers (Lytra and Jørgensen 2008: 5), it has become a common if not almost natural process to send and receive an SMS (Short Message Service) in different languages. Although some studies have examined the transformation and modification of the English language by mobile communication, hardly any, apart from Deumert and Masinyana (2008), have looked at how local South African languages are being reshaped and modified through this medium. Drawing on texting data from university undergraduate students, this paper examines the ways in which three South African languages – Afrikaans, isiXhosa and Setswana – are used, transformed and modified through this medium of communication. It is argued here that the intense creativity displayed by these young cell phone users as they play with the multilingual resources at their disposal may lead to some form of language revitalisation for these languages
