    Robustness of SOC Estimation Algorithms for EV Lithium-Ion Batteries against Modeling Errors and Measurement Noise

    State of charge (SOC) is one of the most important parameters in battery management system (BMS). There are numerous algorithms for SOC estimation, mostly of model-based observer/filter types such as Kalman filters, closed-loop observers, and robust observers. Modeling errors and measurement noises have critical impact on accuracy of SOC estimation in these algorithms. This paper is a comparative study of robustness of SOC estimation algorithms against modeling errors and measurement noises. By using a typical battery platform for vehicle applications with sensor noise and battery aging characterization, three popular and representative SOC estimation methods (extended Kalman filter, PI-controlled observer, and H∞ observer) are compared on such robustness. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that deterioration of SOC estimation accuracy under modeling errors resulted from aging and larger measurement noise, which is quantitatively characterized. The findings of this paper provide useful information on the following aspects: (1) how SOC estimation accuracy depends on modeling reliability and voltage measurement accuracy; (2) pros and cons of typical SOC estimators in their robustness and reliability; (3) guidelines for requirements on battery system identification and sensor selections

    A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers.     State of Charge Estimation of Parallel Connected Battery Cells via Descriptor System Theory

    This manuscript presents an algorithm for individual Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cell state of charge (SOC) estimation when multiple cells are connected in parallel, using only terminal voltage and total current measurements. For battery packs consisting of thousands of cells, it is desirable to estimate individual SOCs by only monitoring the total current in order to reduce sensing cost. Mathematically, series connected cells yield dynamics given by ordinary differential equations under classical full voltage sensing. In contrast, parallel connected cells are evidently more challenging because the dynamics are governed by a nonlinear descriptor system, including differential equations and algebraic equations arising from voltage and current balance across cells. An observer with linear output error injection is formulated, where the individual cell SOCs and local currents are locally observable from the total current and voltage measurements. The asymptotic convergence of differential and algebraic states is established by considering local Lipschitz continuity property of system nonlinearities.     Un des enjeux actuels de la réduction des émissions polluantes pour les véhicules automobiles concerne l'utilisation de moyens de propulsion hybride (électrique+thermique). Les problématiques principales, pour l'automatique, sont alors d'optimiser l'efficacité énergétique globale du véhicule, mais aussi d'améliorer les performances du véhicule hybride. Nous envisageons ici de développer des méthodes de commande robuste dans cet objectif, tout en prenant en compte les contraintes liées à la mise en oeuvre pratique.In the recent years, growing public concern has been given both on the energy problem and on the environment problem resulted from dramatically increased vehicles equipped with Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). Subsequently, intensive contributions have been made by the automotive industries and research institutes on vehicles that depend less on the fossil fuels, and introduce less pollutant emissions. This has led to the emergence of environment-friendly and energy-saving vehicles such as the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) that is usually equipped with one or more additional electric motors and the associated power battery compared with the Conventional vehicles (CVs) propelled solely by the ICE. The key point of an HEV is to design a proper Energy Management Strategy (EMS) that decides how to split the demanded power between the engine and the motor (battery). As the most important and expensive part of an HEV, it is important to take into account battery states, such as battery State of Charge (SOC) and battery ageing, aiming at maintain the optimality of the achieved EMS, as well as prolonging the battery life. In this dissertation, an HEV of parallel structure, which is equipped with a Lithiumion battery is considered. This dissertation is focused on accounting for battery related items, i.e. battery SOC and SOH indicated by battery parameters, in the EMS developments leading to a kind of fault tolerant EMS.     Nonlinear constrained and saturated control of power electronics and electromechanical systems

    Power electronic converters are extensively adopted for the solution of timely issues, such as power quality improvement in industrial plants, energy management in hybrid electrical systems, and control of electrical generators for renewables. Beside nonlinearity, this systems are typically characterized by hard constraints on the control inputs, and sometimes the state variables. In this respect, control laws able to handle input saturation are crucial to formally characterize the systems stability and performance properties. From a practical viewpoint, a proper saturation management allows to extend the systems transient and steady-state operating ranges, improving their reliability and availability. The main topic of this thesis concern saturated control methodologies, based on modern approaches, applied to power electronics and electromechanical systems. The pursued objective is to provide formal results under any saturation scenario, overcoming the drawbacks of the classic solution commonly applied to cope with saturation of power converters, and enhancing performance. For this purpose two main approaches are exploited and extended to deal with power electronic applications: modern anti-windup strategies, providing formal results and systematic design rules for the anti-windup compensator, devoted to handle control saturation, and “one step” saturated feedback design techniques, relying on a suitable characterization of the saturation nonlinearity and less conservative extensions of standard absolute stability theory results. The first part of the thesis is devoted to present and develop a novel general anti-windup scheme, which is then specifically applied to a class of power converters adopted for power quality enhancement in industrial plants. In the second part a polytopic differential inclusion representation of saturation nonlinearity is presented and extended to deal with a class of multiple input power converters, used to manage hybrid electrical energy sources. The third part regards adaptive observers design for robust estimation of the parameters required for high performance control of power systems

    Health-aware predictive control schemes based on industrial processes

    Aplicat embargament des de la data de defensa fins el dia 30 de desembre de 2021The research is motivated by real applications, such as pasteurization plant, water networks and autonomous system, which each of them require a specific control system to provide proper management able to take into account their particular features and operating limits in presence of uncertainties related to their operation and failures from component breakdowns. According to that most of the real systems have nonlinear behaviors, it can be approximated them by polytopic linear uncertain models such as Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) and Takagi-Sugeno (TS) models. Therefore, a new economic Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach based on LPV/TS models is proposed and the stability of the proposed approach is certified by using a region constraint on the terminal state. Besides, the MPC-LPV strategy is extended based on the system with varying delays affecting states and inputs. The control approach allows the controller to accommodate the scheduling parameters and delay change. By computing the prediction of the state variables and delay along a prediction time horizon, the system model can be modified according to the evaluation of the estimated state and delay at each time instant. To increase the system reliability, anticipate the appearance of faults and reduce the operational costs, actuator health monitoring should be considered. Regarding several types of system failures, different strategies are studied for obtaining system failures. First, the damage is assessed with the rainflow-counting algorithm that allows estimating the component’s fatigue and control objective is modified by adding an extra criterion that takes into account the accumulated damage. Besides, two different health-aware economic predictive control strategies that aim to minimize the damage of components are presented. Then, economic health-aware MPC controller is developed to compute the components and system reliability in the MPC model using an LPV modeling approach and maximizes the availability of the system by estimating system reliability. Additionally, another improvement considers chance-constraint programming to compute an optimal list replenishment policy based on a desired risk acceptability level, managing to dynamically designate safety stocks in flowbased networks to satisfy non-stationary flow demands. Finally, an innovative health-aware control approach for autonomous racing vehicles to simultaneously control it to the driving limits and to follow the desired path based on maximization of the battery RUL. The proposed approach is formulated as an optimal on-line robust LMI based MPC driven from Lyapunov stability and controller gain synthesis solved by LPV-LQR problem in LMI formulation with integral action for tracking the trajectory.Esta tesis pretende proporcionar contribuciones teóricas y prácticas sobre seguridad y control de sistemas industriales, especialmente en la forma maten ática de sistemas inciertos. La investigación está motivada por aplicaciones reales, como la planta de pasteurización, las redes de agua y el sistema autónomo, cada uno de los cuales requiere un sistema de control específico para proporcionar una gestión adecuada capaz de tener en cuenta sus características particulares y limites o de operación en presencia de incertidumbres relacionadas con su operación y fallas de averías de componentes. De acuerdo con que la mayoría de los sistemas reales tienen comportamientos no lineales, puede aproximarse a ellos mediante modelos inciertos lineales politopicos como los modelos de Lineal Variación de Parámetros (LPV) y Takagi-Sugeno (TS). Por lo tanto, se propone un nuevo enfoque de Control Predictivo del Modelo (MPC) económico basado en modelos LPV/TS y la estabilidad del enfoque propuesto se certifica mediante el uso de una restricción de región en el estado terminal. Además, la estrategia MPC-LPV se extiende en función del sistema con diferentes demoras que afectan los estados y las entradas. El enfoque de control permite al controlador acomodar los parámetros de programación y retrasar el cambio. Al calcular la predicción de las variables de estado y el retraso a lo largo de un horizonte de tiempo de predicción, el modelo del sistema se puede modificar de acuerdo con la evaluación del estado estimado y el retraso en cada instante de tiempo. Para aumentar la confiabilidad del sistema, anticipar la aparición de fallas y reducir los costos operativos, se debe considerar el monitoreo del estado del actuador. Con respecto a varios tipos de fallas del sistema, se estudian diferentes estrategias para obtener fallas del sistema. Primero, el daño se evalúa con el algoritmo de conteo de flujo de lluvia que permite estimar la fatiga del componente y el objetivo de control se modifica agregando un criterio adicional que tiene en cuenta el daño acumulado. Además, se presentan dos estrategias diferentes de control predictivo económico que tienen en cuenta la salud y tienen como objetivo minimizar el daño de los componentes. Luego, se desarrolla un controlador MPC económico con conciencia de salud para calcular los componentes y la confiabilidad del sistema en el modelo MPC utilizando un enfoque de modelado LPV y maximiza la disponibilidad del sistema mediante la estimación de la confiabilidad del sistema. Además, otra mejora considera la programación de restricción de posibilidades para calcular una política ´optima de reposición de listas basada en un nivel de aceptabilidad de riesgo deseado, logrando designar dinámicamente existencias de seguridad en redes basadas en flujo para satisfacer demandas de flujo no estacionarias. Finalmente, un enfoque innovador de control consciente de la salud para vehículos de carreras autónomos para controlarlo simultáneamente hasta los límites de conducción y seguir el camino deseado basado en la maximización de la bacteria RUL. El diseño del control se divide en dos capas con diferentes escalas de tiempo, planificador de ruta y controlador. El enfoque propuesto está formulado como un MPC robusto en línea optimo basado en LMI impulsado por la estabilidad de Lyapunov y la síntesis de ganancia del controlador resuelta por el problema LPV-LQR en la formulación de LMI con acción integral para el seguimiento de la trayectoria.Postprint (published version

    Control and management of energy storage systems in microgrids

    The rate of integration of the renewable energy sources in modern grids have significantly increased in the last decade. These intermittent, non-dispatchable renewable sources, though environment friendly tend to be grid unfriendly. This is precisely due to the issues pertaining to grid congestion, voltage regulation and stability of grids being reported as a result of the incorporation of renewable sources. In this scenario, the use of energy storage systems (ESS ) in electric grids is being widely proposed to overcome these issues. However, integrating energy storage systems alone will not compensate for the issue created by renewable generation. The control and management of the ESS should be done optimally so that their full capabilities are exploited to overcome the issues in the power grids and to ensure their lower cost of investment by prolonging ESS lifetime through minimising degradation. Motivated by this aspect this Ph.D work focusses on developing an efficient, optimal control and management strategy for ESS in a microgrid, especially hybrid ESS. The Ph.D work addresses this issue by proposing a hierarchical control scheme comprising of a lower power management and higher energy management stage with contributions in each stage. In the power management stage this work focusses on improving aspects of real time control of power converters interfacing ESS to grid and the microgrid system as whole. The work proposes control systems with improved dynamic behaviour for power converters based on the reset control framework. In the microgrid control the work presents a primary+secondary control scheme with improved voltage regulation performance under disturbances, using an observer. The real time power splitting strategies among hybrid ESS accounting for the ESS operating efficiencies and degradation mechanisms will also be addressed in the primary+secondary control of power management stage. The design criteria, stability and robustness analysis will be carried out, along with simulation or experimental verifications. In the higher level energy management stage, the contribution of this work involves application of an economic MPC framework for the management of ESS in microgrids. The work specifically addresses the problems of mitigating grid congestion from renewable power feed-in, minimising ESS degradation and maximising self consumption of generated renewable energy using the MPC based energy management system. A survey of the forecasting methods that can be used for MPC will be carried out and a neural network based forecasting unit for time series prediction will be developed. The practical issue of accounting for forecasting error in the decision making of MPC will be addressed and impact of the resulting conservative decision making on the system performance will be analysed. The improvement in performance with the proposed energy management scheme will be demonstrated and quantified.La integración de las fuentes de energía renovables en las redes modernas ha aumentado significativamente en la última década. Estas fuentes renovables, aunque muy convenientes para el medio ambiente son de naturaleza intermitente, y son no panificables, cosa que genera problemas en la red de distribución. Esto se debe precisamente a los problemas relacionados con la congestión de la red y la regulación del voltaje. En este escenario, el uso de sistemas de almacenamiento de energía (ESS) en redes eléctricas está siendo ampliamente propuesto para superar estos problemas. Sin embargo, la integración de sistemas de almacenamiento de energía por sí solos no compensará el problema creado por la generación renovable. El control y la gestión del ESS deben realizarse de manera óptima, de modo que se aprovechen al máximo sus capacidades para superar los problemas en las redes eléctricas, garantizar un coste de inversión razonable y prolongar la vida útil del ESS minimizando su degradación. Motivado por esta problemática, esta tesis doctoral se centra en desarrollar una estrategia de control y gestión eficiente para los ESS integrados en una microrred, especialmente cuando se trata de ESS de naturaleza. El trabajo de doctorado propone un esquema de control jerárquico compuesto por un control de bajo nivel y una parte de gestión de energía operando a más alto nivel. El trabajo realiza aportaciones en los dos campos. En el control de bajo nivel, este trabajo se centra en mejorar aspectos del control en tiempo real de los convertidores que interconectan el ESS con la red y el sistema de micro red en su conjunto. El trabajo propone sistemas de control con comportamiento dinámico mejorado para convertidores de potencia desarrollados en el marco del control de tipo reset. En el control de microrred, el trabajo presenta un esquema de control primario y uno secundario con un rendimiento de regulación de voltaje mejorado bajo perturbaciones, utilizando un observador. Además, el trabajo plantea estrategias de reparto del flujo de potencia entre los diferentes ESS. Durante el diseño de estos algoritmos de control se tienen en cuenta los mecanismos de degradación de los diferentes ESS. Los algoritmos diseñados se validarán mediante simulaciones y trabajos experimentales. En el apartado de gestión de energía, la contribución de este trabajo se centra en la aplicación del un control predictivo económico basado en modelo (EMPC) para la gestión de ESS en microrredes. El trabajo aborda específicamente los problemas de mitigar la congestión de la red a partir de la alimentación de energía renovable, minimizando la degradación de ESS y maximizando el autoconsumo de energía renovable generada. Se ha realizado una revisión de los métodos de predicción del consumo/generación que pueden usarse en el marco del EMPC y se ha desarrollado un mecanismo de predicción basado en el uso de las redes neuronales. Se ha abordado el análisis del efecto del error de predicción sobre el EMPC y el impacto que la toma de decisiones conservadoras produce en el rendimiento del sistema. La mejora en el rendimiento del esquema de gestión energética propuesto se ha cuantificado.La integració de les fonts d'energia renovables a les xarxes modernes ha augmentat significativament en l’última dècada. Aquestes fonts renovables, encara que molt convenients per al medi ambient són de naturalesa intermitent, i són no panificables, cosa que genera problemes a la xarxa de distribució. Això es deu precisament als problemes relacionats amb la congestió de la xarxa i la regulació de la tensió. En aquest escenari, l’ús de sistemes d'emmagatzematge d'energia (ESS) en xarxes elèctriques està sent àmpliament proposat per superar aquests problemes. No obstant això, la integració de sistemes d'emmagatzematge d'energia per si sols no compensarà el problema creat per la generació renovable. El control i la gestió de l'ESS s'han de fer de manera _optima, de manera que s'aprofitin al màxim les seves capacitats per superar els problemes en les xarxes elèctriques, garantir un cost d’inversió raonable i allargar la vida útil de l'ESS minimitzant la seva degradació. Motivat per aquesta problemàtica, aquesta tesi doctoral es centra a desenvolupar una estratègia de control i gestió eficient per als ESS integrats en una microxarxa, especialment quan es tracta d'ESS de natura híbrida. El treball de doctorat proposa un esquema de control jeràrquic compost per un control de baix nivell i una part de gestió d'energia operant a més alt nivell. El treball realitza aportacions en els dos camps. En el control de baix nivell, aquest treball es centra a millorar aspectes del control en temps real dels convertidors que interconnecten el ESS amb la xarxa i el sistema de microxarxa en el seu conjunt. El treball proposa sistemes de control amb comportament dinàmic millorat per a convertidors de potència desenvolupats en el marc del control de tipus reset. En el control de micro-xarxa, el treball presenta un esquema de control primari i un de secundari de regulació de voltatge millorat sota pertorbacions, utilitzant un observador. A més, el treball planteja estratègies de repartiment de el flux de potència entre els diferents ESS. Durant el disseny d'aquests algoritmes de control es tenen en compte els mecanismes de degradació dels diferents ESS. Els algoritmes dissenyats es validaran mitjanant simulacions i treballs experimentals. En l'apartat de gestió d'energia, la contribució d'aquest treball se centra en l’aplicació de l'un control predictiu econòmic basat en model (EMPC) per a la gestió d'ESS en microxarxes. El treball aborda específicament els problemes de mitigar la congestió de la xarxa a partir de l’alimentació d'energia renovable, minimitzant la degradació d'ESS i maximitzant l'autoconsum d'energia renovable generada. S'ha realitzat una revisió dels mètodes de predicció del consum/generació que poden usar-se en el marc de l'EMPC i s'ha desenvolupat un mecanisme de predicció basat en l’ús de les xarxes neuronals.
