    This paper presents OntoWeaver-S, an ontology-based infrastructure for building knowledge portals. In particular, OntoWeaver-S is integrated with a comprehensive web service platform, IRS-II, for the publication, discovery, and execution of web services. In this way, OntoWeaver-S supports the access and provision of remote web services for knowledge portals. Moreover, it provides a set of comprehensive site ontologies to model and represent knowledge portals, and thus is able to offer high level support for the design and development process. Finally, OntoWeaver-S provides a set of powerful tools to support knowledge portals at design time as well as at run time

This paper introduces a set of propositions that can underlie efforts to develop a KA framework for guiding and studying Web site design.     Summarizing information from Web sites on distributed power generation and alternative energy development

    The World Wide Web (WWW) has become a huge repository of information and knowledge, and an essential channel for information exchange. Many sites and thousands of pages of information on distributed power generation and alternate energy development are being added or modified constantly and the task of finding the most appropriate information is getting difficult. While search engines are capable to return a collection of links according to key terms and some forms of ranking mechanism, it is still necessary to access the Web page and navigate through the site in order to find the information. This paper proposes an interactive summarization framework called iWISE to facilitate the process by providing a summary of the information on the Web site. The proposed approach makes use of graphical visualization, tag clouds and text summarization. A number of cases are presented and compared in this paper with a discussion on future work

    EcoCyc: fusing model organism databases with systems biology.

    EcoCyc (http://EcoCyc.org) is a model organism database built on the genome sequence of Escherichia coli K-12 MG1655. Expert manual curation of the functions of individual E. coli gene products in EcoCyc has been based on information found in the experimental literature for E. coli K-12-derived strains. Updates to EcoCyc content continue to improve the comprehensive picture of E. coli biology. The utility of EcoCyc is enhanced by new tools available on the EcoCyc web site, and the development of EcoCyc as a teaching tool is increasing the impact of the knowledge collected in EcoCyc

    Advanced Visualizations Tools for CERN Institutional Data

    Project Specification: The aim of this openlab summer student project is to provide intuitive and powerful visualisation tools for key institutional data about CERN, including budgets and contracts. The project will be done in collaboration with the Open Knowledge Foundation under the framework of CERN's open data policy regarding scientific results from LHC. The student will use the model-view-controller web development framework with Flask/HTML5/jQuery/TwitterBootstrap technologies for the user interface and SQLAlchemy ORM for database persistence. Abstract: CERN’s Open Access Policy says that “all results of its experimental and theoretical work shall be published or otherwise made generally available”. Following that, CERN has reached a collaboration agreement with the Open Knowledge Foundation in order for CERN to publish and visualize institutional data. As part of this collaboration, we will develop a module for showing this data in a graphical way in the CERN side and a tool in the Open Knowledge Foundation site for automatizing the input of data

    The Determinants of Web Based Instructional Systems\u27 Outcome: A Step-wise Regression Approach

    Technology plays an important role in the everyday life of children born in the ‘digital’ era. The ability to use web technologies in the K-6 educational context opens up new opportunities for teaching and learning. This study investigates the adoption and integration of a web technology into a second grade classroom. The study utilizes a community-based research method to assess the technology adoption decision and the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to effectively utilize this digital medium in the classroom and beyond. The study’s context is a collaborative effort between the academic researchers and an elementary school teacher to develop and implement a classroom web site. This project is a pilot to the school-wide implementation of web sites in grades K-6. Our findings suggest that the factors for web site adoption and integration include the alignment of the site’s purpose with the teacher’s needs, the use of rapid application development strategy for web design, the development of a comprehensive teacher’s training program for web content management, and the use of collaborative tactics for web site implementation. Web technologies have a potential to enrich the students’ educational experience and home-to-school communication. However, there are social and technological challenges for planning, designing, and diffusing web technologies into the elementary schools. The findings of this study have implications for the elementary school educators interested in developing and integrating classroom web sites for teaching, learning, and communicating with their community

    The continuous growth of the World Wide Web imposes the need of new methods of design and determines how to access a web page in the web usage mining by performing preprocessing of the data in a web page and development of on-line information services. The need for predicting the user’s needs in order to improve the usability and user retention of a web site is more than evident now a day. Without proper guidance, a visitor often wanders aimlessly without visiting important pages, loses interest, and leaves the site sooner than expected. In proposed system focus on investigating efficient and effective sequential access pattern mining techniques for web usage data. The mined patterns are then used for matching and generating web links for online recommendations.
