A Prototype Intelligent Tutoring System for Programming Languages: Adding a User Model and Feedback to Instructional Transaction Shells

    Get PDF
Intelligent tutoring systems and knowledge management systems are becoming increasingly important, especially their connection to training-on-demand systems. New developments like the Internet and advances in expert systems allow the deployment of intelligent interfaces, which can present the knowledge accumulated in a database. This paper proposes a prototype that utilizes these new technologies to extend Merrillā€™s work (1992) on instructional transaction shells. These shells embody instructional techniques that are independent of the knowledge they are teaching, and thus reusable. The prototype includes a self-learning expert system for user modeling, thus allowing for a personalized user interface and presentation of content

The Session Inventory Module within an Intelligent Tutoring System for Data Normalization

    Get PDF
The knowledge acquisition of data normalization has been commonly perceived as a hurdle that is challenging students in the beginning database classes. As an effort to provide students with additional assistance while learning this topic, an intelligent tutoring system is proposed and implemented that can be used as a virtual private tutor to teach students in a one-on-one manner. This paper describes the strategically design and management of the tutorial sessions within this system. These sessions are designed and maintained according to their theme topics and difficulty levels so that the virtual tutor can dynamically select sessions based on the assessment of a studentā€™s knowledge level and progress

Intelligent mooc for the disaster resilience dprof programme

    Get PDF
The CADRE Project offers Intelligent MOOC for the disaster resilience DPROF programme (MOOC-DPROF). MOOC-DPROF aims at unlimited participation and open access via the Virtual Environment for the Built Environment Research to reduce knowledge shortfalls across the EU. PhD students registered in MOOC-DPROF differ by their knowledge levels, preferences, interests, goals, cognitive styles and learning styles. The basis of MOOC-DPROF is individual learning. The design of MOOC-DPROF is for it to run within the Moodle platform. PhD students are offered personalised learning materials in the form of digital textbooks, videos, audios as well as calculators, software, computer learning systems, an intelligent testing system, affective intelligent tutoring system, etc. A personalised MOOC-DPROF adapts the studies to individual needs. Upon completing the analysis of globally developed resilience management MOOCs, it was noticed that there is still no MOOC developed by applying biometric and intelligent systems in an integrated manner, something that has already been implemented with the MOOC-DPROF. The subsystems and a Case Study are briefly analysed in this paper

Decision-making tutor: Providing on-the-job training for oil palm plantation managers

    Get PDF
Over the years many Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) have been used successfully as teaching and training tools. Although many studies have proven the effectiveness of ITSs used in isolation, there have been very few attempts to embed ITSs with existing systems. This area of research has a lot of potential in providing life-long learning and work place training. We present DM-Tutor (Decision-Making Tutor), the first constraint-based tutor to be embedded within an existing system, the Management Information System (MIS) for oil palm plantation management. The goal of DM-Tutor is to provide scenario-based training using real-life operational data and actual plantation conditions. We present the system and the studies we have performed. The results show that DM-Tutor improved studentsā€™ knowledge significantly. The participants found DM-Tutor to be easy to understand and interesting to use

An Intelligent Tutoring System for Teaching Grammar English Tenses

    Get PDF
The evolution of Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) is the result of the amount of research in the field of education and artificial intelligence in recent years. English is the third most common languages in the world and also is the internationally dominant in the telecommunications, science and trade, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomatic language as most of the areas of work now taught in English. Therefore, the demand for learning English has increased. In this paper, we describe the design of an Intelligent Tutoring System for teaching English language grammar to help students learn English grammar easily and smoothly. The system provides all topics of English grammar and generates a series of questions automatically for each topic for the students to solve. The system adapts with all the individual differences of students and begins gradually with students from easier to harder level. The intelligent tutoring system was given to a group of students of all age groups to try it and to see the impact of the system on students. The results showed a good satisfaction of the students toward the system

Enhancing simulation education with intelligent tutoring systems

    Get PDF
The demand for education in the area of simulation is in the increase. This paper describes how education in the field of simulation can take advantage of the virtues of intelligent tutoring with respect to enhancing the educational process. For this purpose, this paper gives an overview of what constitutes the objectives and the content of a comprehensive course in discrete event simulation. The architecture of an intelligent tutoring system is presented and it is discussed how these sophisticated learning aids offer individualised student guidance and support within a learning environment. The paper then introduces a prototype intelligent tutoring system, the simulation tutor, and suggests how the system might be developed to enhance education in simulation

Knowledge-based Intelligent Tutoring System for Teaching Mongo Database

Recently, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) got much attention from researchers even though ITS educational technology began in the late 1960s and ITS is just embryonic from laboratories into the field. In this paper we outline an intelligent tutoring system for teaching basics of the databases system called (MDB). The MDB was built as education system by using the authoring tool (ITSB). MDB contains learning materials as a group of lessons for beginner level which include relational database system and lessons in the process to install and set up a database. MDB system has exams for each level of the Lessons. An evaluation was done to see the effectiveness the MDB among learners and instructors. The outcome of the evaluation was promising

Development and Evaluation of the Oracle Intelligent Tutoring System (OITS)

    Get PDF
This paper presents the design and development of intelligent tutoring system for teaching Oracle. The Oracle Intelligent Tutoring System (OITS) examined the power of a new methodology to supporting students in Oracle programming. The system presents the topic of Introduction to Oracle with automatically generated problems for the students to solve. The system is dynamically adapted at run time to the studentā€™s individual progress. An initial evaluation study was done to investigate the effect of using the intelligent tutoring system on the performance of students

Adaptive Intelligent Tutoring System for learning Computer Theory

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present an intelligent tutoring system developed to help students in learning Computer Theory. The Intelligent tutoring system was built using ITSB authoring tool. The system helps students to learn finite automata, pushdown automata, Turing machines and examines the relationship between these automata and formal languages, deterministic and nondeterministic machines, regular expressions, context free grammars, undecidability, and complexity. During the process the intelligent tutoring system gives assistance and feedback of many types in an intelligent manner according to the behavior of the student. An evaluation of the intelligent tutoring system has revealed reasonably acceptable results in terms of its usability and learning abilities are concerned
