Research and Education in Computational Science and Engineering
Over the past two decades the field of computational science and engineering
(CSE) has penetrated both basic and applied research in academia, industry, and
laboratories to advance discovery, optimize systems, support decision-makers,
and educate the scientific and engineering workforce. Informed by centuries of
theory and experiment, CSE performs computational experiments to answer
questions that neither theory nor experiment alone is equipped to answer. CSE
provides scientists and engineers of all persuasions with algorithmic
inventions and software systems that transcend disciplines and scales. Carried
on a wave of digital technology, CSE brings the power of parallelism to bear on
troves of data. Mathematics-based advanced computing has become a prevalent
means of discovery and innovation in essentially all areas of science,
engineering, technology, and society; and the CSE community is at the core of
this transformation. However, a combination of disruptive
developments---including the architectural complexity of extreme-scale
computing, the data revolution that engulfs the planet, and the specialization
required to follow the applications to new frontiers---is redefining the scope
and reach of the CSE endeavor. This report describes the rapid expansion of CSE
and the challenges to sustaining its bold advances. The report also presents

GTTC Future of Ground Testing Meta-Analysis of 20 Documents
National research, development, test, and evaluation ground testing capabilities in the United States are at risk. There is a lack of vision and consensus on what is and will be needed, contributing to a significant threat that ground test capabilities may not be able to meet the national security and industrial needs of the future. To support future decisions, the AIAA Ground Testing Technical Committees (GTTC) Future of Ground Test (FoGT) Working Group selected and reviewed 20 seminal documents related to the application and direction of ground testing. Each document was reviewed, with the content main points collected and organized into sections in the form of a gap analysis current state, future state, major challenges/gaps, and recommendations. Space Structures: Issues in Dynamics and Control
A selective technical overview is presented on the vibration and control of large space structures, the analysis, design, and construction of which will require major technical contributions from the civil/structural, mechanical, and extended engineering communities. The immediacy of the U.S. space station makes the particular emphasis placed on large space structures and their control appropriate. The space station is but one part of the space program, and includes the lunar base, which the space station is to service. This paper attempts to summarize some of the key technical issues and hence provide a starting point for further involvement. The first half of this paper provides an introduction and overview of large space structures and their dynamics; the latter half discusses structural control, including control‐system design and nonlinearities. A crucial aspect of the large space structures problem is that dynamics and control must be considered simultaneously; the problems cannot be addressed individually and coupled as an afterthought
ARMD Workshop on Materials and Methods for Rapid Manufacturing for Commercial and Urban Aviation
This report documents the goals, organization and outcomes of the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorates (ARMD) Materials and Methods for Rapid Manufacturing for Commercial and Urban Aviation Workshop. The workshop began with a series of plenary presentations by leaders in the field of structures and materials, followed by concurrent symposia focused on forecasting the future of various technologies related to rapid manufacturing of metallic materials and polymeric matrix composites, referred to herein as composites. Shortly after the workshop, questionnaires were sent to key workshop participants from the aerospace industry with requests to rank the importance of a series of potential investment areas identified during the workshop. Outcomes from the workshop and subsequent questionnaires are being used as guidance for NASA investments in this important technology area
Integrative biological simulation praxis: Considerations from physics, philosophy, and data/model curation practices
Integrative biological simulations have a varied and controversial history in
the biological sciences. From computational models of organelles, cells, and
simple organisms, to physiological models of tissues, organ systems, and
ecosystems, a diverse array of biological systems have been the target of
large-scale computational modeling efforts. Nonetheless, these research agendas
have yet to prove decisively their value among the broader community of
theoretical and experimental biologists. In this commentary, we examine a range
of philosophical and practical issues relevant to understanding the potential
of integrative simulations. We discuss the role of theory and modeling in
different areas of physics and suggest that certain sub-disciplines of physics
provide useful cultural analogies for imagining the future role of simulations
in biological research. We examine philosophical issues related to modeling
which consistently arise in discussions about integrative simulations and
suggest a pragmatic viewpoint that balances a belief in philosophy with the
recognition of the relative infancy of our state of philosophical
understanding. Finally, we discuss community workflow and publication practices
to allow research to be readily discoverable and amenable to incorporation into
simulations. We argue that there are aligned incentives in widespread adoption
of practices which will both advance the needs of integrative simulation
efforts as well as other contemporary trends in the biological sciences,
ranging from open science and data sharing to improving reproducibility.Comment: 10 page
