    Graph kernels between point clouds

    Point clouds are sets of points in two or three dimensions. Most kernel methods for learning on sets of points have not yet dealt with the specific geometrical invariances and practical constraints associated with point clouds in computer vision and graphics. In this paper, we present extensions of graph kernels for point clouds, which allow to use kernel methods for such ob jects as shapes, line drawings, or any three-dimensional point clouds. In order to design rich and numerically efficient kernels with as few free parameters as possible, we use kernels between covariance matrices and their factorizations on graphical models. We derive polynomial time dynamic programming recursions and present applications to recognition of handwritten digits and Chinese characters from few training examples

    Activity representation with motion hierarchies

    International audienceComplex activities, e.g., pole vaulting, are composed of a variable number of sub-events connected by complex spatio-temporal relations, whereas simple actions can be represented as sequences of short temporal parts. In this paper, we learn hierarchical representations of activity videos in an unsupervised manner. These hierarchies of mid-level motion components are data-driven decompositions specific to each video. We introduce a spectral divisive clustering algorithm to efficiently extract a hierarchy over a large number of tracklets (i.e., local trajectories). We use this structure to represent a video as an unordered binary tree. We model this tree using nested histograms of local motion features. We provide an efficient positive definite kernel that computes the structural and visual similarity of two hierarchical decompositions by relying on models of their parent-child relations. We present experimental results on four recent challenging benchmarks: the High Five dataset [Patron-Perez et al, 2010], the Olympics Sports dataset [Niebles et al, 2010], the Hollywood 2 dataset [Marszalek et al, 2009], and the HMDB dataset [Kuehne et al, 2011]. We show that pervideo hierarchies provide additional information for activity recognition. Our approach improves over unstructured activity models, baselines using other motion decomposition algorithms, and the state of the art

    Cuneiform Character Similarity Using Graph Representations

    Motivated by the increased demand for computerized analysis of documents within the Digital Humanities we are developing algorithms for cuneiform tablets, which contain the oldest handwritten script used for more than three millennia. These tablets are typically found in the Middle East and contain a total amount of written words comparable to all documents in Latin or ancient Greek. In previous work we have shown how to extract vector drawings from 3D-models similar to those manually drawn over digital photographs. Both types of drawings share the Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) format representing the cuneiform characters as splines. These splines are transformed into a graph representation and extend these by triangulation. Based on graph kernel methods we show a similarity metric for cuneiform characters, which have higher degrees of freedom than handwriting with ink on paper. An evaluation of the precision and recall of our proposed approach is shown and compared to well-known methods for processing handwriting. Finally a summary and an outlook are given

    Data-Driven Shape Analysis and Processing

    Data-driven methods play an increasingly important role in discovering geometric, structural, and semantic relationships between 3D shapes in collections, and applying this analysis to support intelligent modeling, editing, and visualization of geometric data. In contrast to traditional approaches, a key feature of data-driven approaches is that they aggregate information from a collection of shapes to improve the analysis and processing of individual shapes. In addition, they are able to learn models that reason about properties and relationships of shapes without relying on hard-coded rules or explicitly programmed instructions. We provide an overview of the main concepts and components of these techniques, and discuss their application to shape classification, segmentation, matching, reconstruction, modeling and exploration, as well as scene analysis and synthesis, through reviewing the literature and relating the existing works with both qualitative and numerical comparisons. We conclude our report with ideas that can inspire future research in data-driven shape analysis and processing.Comment: 10 pages, 19 figure

    EXTRACTING FLOW FEATURES USING BAG-OF-FEATURES AND SUPERVISED LEARNING TECHNIQUES

    Measuring the similarity between two streamlines is fundamental to many important flow data analysis and visualization tasks such as feature detection, pattern querying and streamline clustering. This dissertation presents a novel streamline similarity measure inspired by the bag-of-features concept from computer vision. Different from other streamline similarity measures, the proposed one considers both the distribution of and the distances among features along a streamline. The proposed measure is tested in two common tasks in vector field exploration: streamline similarity query and streamline clustering. Compared with a recent streamline similarity measure, the proposed measure allows users to see the interesting features more clearly in a complicated vector field. In addition to focusing on similar streamlines through streamline similarity query or clustering, users sometimes want to group and see similar features from different streamlines. For example, it is useful to find all the spirals contained in different streamlines and present them to users. To this end, this dissertation proposes to segment each streamline into different features. This problem has not been studied extensively in flow visualization. For instance, many flow feature extraction techniques segment streamline based on simple heuristics such as accumulative curvature or arc length, and, as a result, the segments they found usually do not directly correspond to complete flow features. This dissertation proposes a machine learning-based streamline segmentation algorithm to segment each streamline into distinct features. It is shown that the proposed method can locate interesting features (e.g., a spiral in a streamline) more accurately than some other flow feature extraction methods. Since streamlines are space curves, the proposed method also serves as a general curve segmentation method and may be applied in other fields such as computer vision. Besides flow visualization, a pedagogical visualization tool DTEvisual for teaching access control is also discussed in this dissertation. Domain Type Enforcement (DTE) is a powerful abstraction for teaching students about modern models of access control in operating systems. With DTEvisual, students have an environment for visualizing a DTE-based policy using graphs, visually modifying the policy, and animating the common DTE queries in real time. A user study of DTEvisual suggests that the tool is helpful for students to understand DTE

    Indexing and Retrieval of 3D Articulated Geometry Models

    In this PhD research study, we focus on building a content-based search engine for 3D articulated geometry models. 3D models are essential components in nowadays graphic applications, and are widely used in the game, animation and movies production industry. With the increasing number of these models, a search engine not only provides an entrance to explore such a huge dataset, it also facilitates sharing and reusing among different users. In general, it reduces production costs and time to develop these 3D models. Though a lot of retrieval systems have been proposed in recent years, search engines for 3D articulated geometry models are still in their infancies. Among all the works that we have surveyed, reliability and efficiency are the two main issues that hinder the popularity of such systems. In this research, we have focused our attention mainly to address these two issues. We have discovered that most existing works design features and matching algorithms in order to reflect the intrinsic properties of these 3D models. For instance, to handle 3D articulated geometry models, it is common to extract skeletons and use graph matching algorithms to compute the similarity. However, since this kind of feature representation is complex, it leads to high complexity of the matching algorithms. As an example, sub-graph isomorphism can be NP-hard for model graph matching. Our solution is based on the understanding that skeletal matching seeks correspondences between the two comparing models. If we can define descriptive features, the correspondence problem can be solved by bag-based matching where fast algorithms are available. In the first part of the research, we propose a feature extraction algorithm to extract such descriptive features. We then convert the skeletal matching problems into bag-based matching. We further define metric similarity measure so as to support fast search. We demonstrate the advantages of this idea in our experiments. The improvement on precision is 12\% better at high recall. The indexing search of 3D model is 24 times faster than the state of the art if only the first relevant result is returned. However, improving the quality of descriptive features pays the price of high dimensionality. Curse of dimensionality is a notorious problem on large multimedia databases. The computation time scales exponentially as the dimension increases, and indexing techniques may not be useful in such situation. In the second part of the research, we focus ourselves on developing an embedding retrieval framework to solve the high dimensionality problem. We first argue that our proposed matching method projects 3D models on manifolds. We then use manifold learning technique to reduce dimensionality and maximize intra-class distances. We further propose a numerical method to sub-sample and fast search databases. To preserve retrieval accuracy using fewer landmark objects, we propose an alignment method which is also beneficial to existing works for fast search. The advantages of the retrieval framework are demonstrated in our experiments that it alleviates the problem of curse of dimensionality. It also improves the efficiency (3.4 times faster) and accuracy (30\% more accurate) of our matching algorithm proposed above. In the third part of the research, we also study a closely related area, 3D motions. 3D motions are captured by sticking sensor on human beings. These captured data are real human motions that are used to animate 3D articulated geometry models. Creating realistic 3D motions is an expensive and tedious task. Although 3D motions are very different from 3D articulated geometry models, we observe that existing works also suffer from the problem of temporal structure matching. This also leads to low efficiency in the matching algorithms. We apply the same idea of bag-based matching into the work of 3D motions. From our experiments, the proposed method has a 13\% improvement on precision at high recall and is 12 times faster than existing works. As a summary, we have developed algorithms for 3D articulated geometry models and 3D motions, covering feature extraction, feature matching, indexing and fast search methods. Through various experiments, our idea of converting restricted matching to bag-based matching improves matching efficiency and reliability. These have been shown in both 3D articulated geometry models and 3D motions. We have also connected 3D matching to the area of manifold learning. The embedding retrieval framework not only improves efficiency and accuracy, but has also opened a new area of research
