A bibliometric analysis of the Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modelling
This paper reviews the articles published in Volumes 2-24 of the Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modelling (formerly the Journal of Molecular Graphics), focusing on the changes that have occurred in the subject over the years, and on the most productive and most cited authors and institutions. The most cited papers are those describing systems or algorithms, but the proportion of these types of article is decreasing as more applications of molecular graphics and molecular modelling are reported
Predicting Skin Permeability by means of Computational Approaches : Reliability and Caveats in Pharmaceutical Studies
© 2019 American Chemical Society. The skin is the main barrier between the internal body environment and the external one. The characteristics of this barrier and its properties are able to modify and affect drug delivery and chemical toxicity parameters. Therefore, it is not surprising that permeability of many different compounds has been measured through several in vitro and in vivo techniques. Moreover, many different in silico approaches have been used to identify the correlation between the structure of the permeants and their permeability, to reproduce the skin behavior, and to predict the ability of specific chemicals to permeate this barrier. A significant number of issues, like interlaboratory variability, experimental conditions, data set building rationales, and skin site of origin and hydration, still prevent us from obtaining a definitive predictive skin permeability model. This review wants to show the main advances and the principal approaches in computational methods used to predict this property, to enlighten the main issues that have arisen, and to address the challenges to develop in future research.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Competitive Solvation of the Imidazolium Cation by Water and Methanol
Imidazolium-based ionic liquids are widely used in conjunction with molecular
liquids for various applications. Solvation, miscibility and similar properties
are of fundamental importance for successful implementation of theoretical
schemes. This work reports competitive solvation of the 1,3-dimethylimidazolium
cation by water and methanol. Employing molecular dynamics simulations powered
by semiempirical Hamiltonian (electronic structure level of description), the
local structure nearly imidazolium cation is described in terms of radial
distribution functions. Although water and methanol are chemically similar,
water appears systematically more successful in solvating the
1,3-dimethylimidazolium cation. This result fosters construction of future
applications of the ternary ion-molecular systems

Permeation of CO2 and N2 through glassy poly(dimethyl phenylene) oxide under steady- and presteady-state conditions
Glassy polymers are often used for gas separations because of their high selectivity. Although the dual-mode permeation model correctly fits their sorption and permeation isotherms, its physical interpretation is disputed, and it does not describe permeation far from steady state, a condition expected when separations involve intermittent renewable energy sources. To develop a more comprehensive permeation model, we combine experiment, molecular dynamics, and multiscale reaction–diffusion modeling to characterize the time-dependent permeation of N2 and CO2 through a glassy poly(dimethyl phenylene oxide) membrane, a model system. Simulations of experimental time-dependent permeation data for both gases in the presteady-state and steady-state regimes show that both single- and dual-mode reaction–diffusion models reproduce the experimental observations, and that sorbed gas concentrations lag the external pressure rise. The results point to environment-sensitive diffusion coefficients as a vital characteristic of transport in glassy polymers
