Hybrid solutions to instantaneous MIMO blind separation and decoding: narrowband, QAM and square cases
Future wireless communication systems are desired to support high data rates and high quality transmission when considering the growing multimedia applications. Increasing the channel throughput leads to the multiple input and multiple output and blind equalization techniques in recent years. Thereby blind MIMO equalization has attracted a great interest. Both system performance and computational complexities play important roles in real time communications. Reducing the computational load and providing accurate performances are the main challenges in present systems. In this thesis, a hybrid method which can provide an affordable complexity with good performance for Blind Equalization in large constellation MIMO systems is proposed first. Saving computational cost happens both in the signal sep- aration part and in signal detection part. First, based on Quadrature amplitude modulation signal characteristics, an efficient and simple nonlinear function for the Independent Compo- nent Analysis is introduced. Second, using the idea of the sphere decoding, we choose the soft information of channels in a sphere, and overcome the so- called curse of dimensionality of the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm and enhance the final results simultaneously. Mathematically, we demonstrate in the digital communication cases, the EM algorithm shows Newton -like convergence.Despite the widespread use of forward -error coding (FEC), most multiple input multiple output (MIMO) blind channel estimation techniques ignore its presence, and instead make the sim- plifying assumption that the transmitted symbols are uncoded. However, FEC induces code structure in the transmitted sequence that can be exploited to improve blind MIMO channel estimates. In final part of this work, we exploit the iterative channel estimation and decoding performance for blind MIMO equalization. Experiments show the improvements achievable by exploiting the existence of coding structures and that it can access the performance of a BCJR equalizer with perfect channel information in a reasonable SNR range. All results are confirmed experimentally for the example of blind equalization in block fading MIMO systems
Performance of turbo multi-user detectors in space-time coded DS-CDMA systems
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 118-123).In this thesis we address the problem of improving the uplink capacity and the performance of a DS-CDMA system by combining MUD and turbo decoding. These two are combined following the turbo principle. Depending on the concatenation scheme used, we divide these receivers into the Partitioned Approach (PA) and the Iterative Approach (IA) receivers. To enable the iterative exchange of information, these receivers employ a Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) detector as the first receiver stage
On Capacity Optimality of OAMP: Beyond IID Sensing Matrices and Gaussian Signaling
This paper investigates a large unitarily invariant system (LUIS) involving a
unitarily invariant sensing matrix, an arbitrarily fixed signal distribution,
and forward error control (FEC) coding. A universal Gram-Schmidt
orthogonalization is considered for the construction of orthogonal approximate
message passing (OAMP), which renders the results applicable to general
prototypes without the differentiability restriction. For OAMP with Lipschitz
continuous local estimators, we develop two variational
single-input-single-output transfer functions, based on which we analyze the
achievable rate of OAMP. Furthermore, when the state evolution of OAMP has a
unique fixed point, we reveal that OAMP reaches the constrained capacity
predicted by the replica method of the LUIS with an arbitrary signal
distribution based on matched FEC coding. The replica method is rigorous for
LUIS with Gaussian signaling and for certain sub-classes of LUIS with arbitrary
signal distributions. Several area properties are established based on the
variational transfer functions of OAMP. Meanwhile, we elaborate a replica
constrained capacity-achieving coding principle for LUIS, based on which
irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are optimized for binary
signaling in the simulation results. We show that OAMP with the optimized codes
has significant performance improvement over the un-optimized ones and the
well-known Turbo linear MMSE algorithm. For quadrature phase-shift keying
(QPSK) modulation, replica constrained capacity-approaching bit error rate
(BER) performances are observed under various channel conditions.Comment: Single column, 34 pages, 9 figure
Using Channel Output Feedback to Increase Throughput in Hybrid-ARQ
Hybrid-ARQ protocols have become common in many packet transmission systems
due to their incorporation in various standards. Hybrid-ARQ combines the normal
automatic repeat request (ARQ) method with error correction codes to increase
reliability and throughput. In this paper, we look at improving upon this
performance using feedback information from the receiver, in particular, using
a powerful forward error correction (FEC) code in conjunction with a proposed
linear feedback code for the Rayleigh block fading channels. The new hybrid-ARQ
scheme is initially developed for full received packet feedback in a
point-to-point link. It is then extended to various different multiple-antenna
scenarios (MISO/MIMO) with varying amounts of packet feedback information.
Simulations illustrate gains in throughput.Comment: 30 page
Multidimensional Optimized Optical Modulation Formats
This chapter overviews the relatively large body of work (experimental and theoretical) on modulation formats for optical coherent links. It first gives basic definitions and performance metrics for modulation formats that are common in the literature. Then, the chapter discusses optimization of modulation formats in coded systems. It distinguishes between three cases, depending on the type of decoder employed, which pose quite different requirements on the choice of modulation format. The three cases are soft-decision decoding, hard-decision decoding, and iterative decoding, which loosely correspond to weak, medium, and strong coding, respectively. The chapter also discusses the realizations of the transmitter and transmission link properties and the receiver algorithms, including DSP and decoding. It further explains how to simply determine the transmitted symbol from the received 4D vector, without resorting to a full search of the Euclidean distances to all points in the whole constellation
Overview of high-speed TDM-PON beyond 50 Gbps per wavelength using digital signal processing [Invited Tutorial]
The recent evolution of passive optical network standards and related research activities for physical layer solutions that achieve bit rates well above 10 Gbps per wavelength (lambda) is discussed. We show that the advancement toward 50, 100, and 200 Gbps/lambda will certainly require a strong introduction of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) technologies for linear, and maybe nonlinear, equalization and for forward error correction. We start by reviewing in detail the current standardization activities in the International Telecommunication Union and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and then we present a comparison of the DSP approaches for traditional direct detection solutions and for future coherent detection approaches.
