Research has extensively demonstrated that healthcare industry has rapidly implemented and adopted information technology in recent years. Research in health information technology (HIT), which represents a major component of the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, demonstrates similar findings. In this paper, review the literature to better understand the work on HIT that researchers have conducted in HICSS from 2008 to 2017. In doing so, we identify themes, methods, technology types, research populations, context, and emerged research gaps from the reviewed literature. With much change and development in the HIT field and varying levels of adoption, this review uncovers, catalogs, and analyzes the research in HIT at HICSS in this ten-year period and provides future directions for research in the field

Monitoring Collective Intelligence in Lithuania’s Online Communities

This paper presents the findings of a systematic survey that evaluated the potential of online communities (or Civic Tech) in Lithuania to co-create collective intelligence. Traditional approaches to public engagement remain relevant, notwithstanding, our enquiry is more interested in the growing potential of digital-enabled citizens to increase efficient collective performance. Civic intelligence is a form of collective intelligence exercised by a group’s capacity to perceive societal problems and its ability to address them effectively. The subject of the research is “bottom up” digital-enabled online platforms initiated by Lithuanian public organizations, civic movements and/or business entities. This scientific project advances our understanding about the basic preconditions in online communities through which collective intelligence is being systematically co-created. By monitoring the performance of Civic Tech platforms, the scientific question was examined, what are the socio-technological conditions that led the communities to become more intelligent. The results of web-based monitoring were obtained by applying Collective intelligence Monitoring technique and Pearson correlation analysis. This provided information about the potential and limits of online communities, and what changes may be needed to overcome such limitations

Relationship between Facebook usage and youth political participation in Nigeria

Youth political participation is an engaging area of academic research that is evolving. However, studies have recently suggested that traditional form of political participation, especially among youth has been declining in developed and developing countries which may likely create an uncertain future for democracy. Nevertheless, researches have not clearly examined why youth political participation suddenly changed and what is now motivating them to participate. This research examined the relationship between Facebook usage and youth political participation and also addresses why there has been an unprecedented increase in political interest among Nigerian youth in recent years. The study also examined online/offline modes of youth political participation. The present study hypothesized that, Facebook usage significantly relates to youth political participation. The argument is supported by the empirical findings from the quantitative survey of youth (N = 372) in Bauchi metropolis and also from the review of the existing related literature. The results justify that Facebook usage, interactivity with political figures, perceived Facebook information quality and political interest significantly correlates with online/offline political participation among youth. Facebook allows marginalized youth from political activities to interact with weak and strong ties about political issues, share and express their opinions. Conversely, in this study interactivity with political figures does not significant correlate with online political participation. Nonetheless, the findings of this research has reinvigorated the implication of Facebook usage, and present an in-depth knowledge and understanding about Nigerian youth political participation

Relação entre gestão do conhecimento e inovação na cadeia produtiva da maçã

The constant changes which have shaped the companies environment have mobilized researchers to investigate the factors that lead them to innovate and reach higher levels of performance. In this context, knowledge management has been considered as a driving force for development and crucial for innovation. However, little attention has been paid to the use of these concepts in the agribusiness sector. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge management processes and innovation in the apple production chain in the Southern Region of Brazil from the links of production and packing-houses. For that, a quantitative, descriptive study was carried out through a survey with 166 actors of the apple production chain, whose analysis was made using the structural equation modeling technique. The results obtained provided strong support for the hypothesized relation, which showed that knowledge management significantly influences both product and process innovation. The conclusions of this study provide a theoretical and empirical basis for a better understanding of the importance of knowledge management and innovation to improve the performance of the apple production chain.

ANTECEDENTS AND OUTCOMES OF OPERATIONAL ALIGNMENT IN THE CONTEXT OF ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS

    Get PDF
The paper examines the topic of operational alignment in the context of academic institutions. It aims to contribute to the understanding of mechanisms constituting operational alignment and the effects of operational alignment. Operational alignment is conceptualized as the adequateness of IT function’s support for the research department’s goals and priorities. A research model, including social and structural aspects and consequences of operational alignment, is derived and tested in a sample of 162 German research departments. Questionnaire-based analysis using partial least squares highlights the positive influences of shared understanding, IT flexibility, and IT service on operational alignment, whereas communication, trust and respect, and participation are not found to directly improve operational alignment. Our results show that operational alignment significantly enhances performance in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. Post-hoc analysis further suggests that social antecedents largely contribute to operational alignment by a background mechanism, whereas structural antecedents in terms of IT flexibility and IT service are directly linked to operational alignment. Opportunities for further research are outlined

Satellite meteorology in the cold war era: scientific coalitions and international leadership 1946-1964

In tracing the history of the TIROS meteorological satellite system, this dissertation details the convergence of two communities: the DOD space scientists who established US capability to launch and operate these remote sensing systems and the US Weather Bureau meteorologists who would be the managers and users of satellite data. Between 1946 and 1964, these persons participated in successive coalitions. These coalitions were necessary in part because satellite systems were too big—geographically, fiscally, and technically—to be developed and operated within a single institution. Thus, TIROS technologies and people trace their roots to several research centers—institutions that the USWB and later NASA attempted to coordinate for US R&D. The gradual transfer of persons and hardware from the armed services to the non-military NASA sheds light on the US’s evolution as a Cold War global power, shaped from the “top-down” (by the executive and legislative branches) as well as the “bottom-up” (by military and non-military scientific communities). Through these successive coalitions, actor terms centered on “basic science” or the circulation of atmospheric data were used to help define bureaucratic places (the Upper Atmospheric Rocket Research Panel, International Geophysical Year, NASA, and the World Weather Watch) in which basic research would be supported by sustained and collaboration could take place with international partners.Ph.D

How Can Physicians’ Knowledge Be Activated To Provide Better Healthcare? Explaining Electronic Health Record Adaptation by Physicians.

Despite the rising costs of healthcare and falling quality of care, the integration of EHR (Electronic Health Records) in supporting collaboration to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare remains a challenge. It appears that the physicians are at the center of this bottleneck. The literature suggests that the reasons for the limited use relate to policy, financial and usability considerations, but it does not provide an understanding of reasons for physicians\u27 limited interaction and adaptation of EHR. Following an analysis of qualitative data, collected in a case study at a hospital using interviews, this research shows how a collaborative technology architecture can enable the physicians to better interact with their partners using the E.H.R technology for the purpose of improving healthcare provision
