A Conductor’s Guide to Joan Szymko’s Shadow and Light: An Alzheimer’s Journey

    Get PDF
Joan Szymko (pronounced SHIM-koh) is an American composer-conductor with a prolific output of choral music. With over 100 choral pieces in print, her works are regularly heard at national and international festivals and competitions, including regional and national American Choral Directors Association conferences. She was selected to present at the 2020 World Symposium on Choral music in Auckland, New Zealand, which was unfortunately canceled due to the COVID pandemic. Szymko’s only major choral/orchestral work, Shadow and Light: An Alzheimer’s Journey, has been performed three times: in April 2016 by Eugene Vocal Arts; in September 2019 by the Oregon Repertory Singers; and in June 2019 by the Portara Ensemble in Nashville, Tennessee. In 2014, Eugene Vocal Arts commissioned Szymko to create a libretto that focused on Alzheimer’s dementia and compose the music for a major choral/orchestral work. After eight months of investigation, which included interviews with patients in various stages of the disease and their care-partners, as well as extensive medical research, Szymko conceived a work in three parts, totaling sixteen movements, and requiring 70 minutes to perform. Szymko developed the text for the work from patient and care-partner quotations, classic and contemporary poetry, scripture, hymnody, and her own observations. It should be noted that “care-partners” is a term Szymko uses to define those afflicted by Alzheimer’s and their loved ones. This dissertation will serve as a conductor’s guide to Joan Szymko’s Shadow and Light: An Alzheimer’s Journey. This project includes a detailed examination of the work’s history and interviews with the composer and the commission conductor. A textual analysis follows, including a comprehensive exegesis and structural analysis of all texts. The multifarious resources for Shadow and Light: An Alzheimer’s Journey mean that a critical evaluation of the work has to explore the selection process for each movement. A further examination of the relationship of music and text is gained through a conductor’s analysis of the score, including a bar analysis using the Julius Herford method. The inclusion of a conductor’s preparation guide for rehearsal and performance will conclude the project

    Talk2Care: Facilitating Asynchronous Patient-Provider Communication with Large-Language-Model

Despite the plethora of telehealth applications to assist home-based older adults and healthcare providers, basic messaging and phone calls are still the most common communication methods, which suffer from limited availability, information loss, and process inefficiencies. One promising solution to facilitate patient-provider communication is to leverage large language models (LLMs) with their powerful natural conversation and summarization capability. However, there is a limited understanding of LLMs' role during the communication. We first conducted two interview studies with both older adults (N=10) and healthcare providers (N=9) to understand their needs and opportunities for LLMs in patient-provider asynchronous communication. Based on the insights, we built an LLM-powered communication system, Talk2Care, and designed interactive components for both groups: (1) For older adults, we leveraged the convenience and accessibility of voice assistants (VAs) and built an LLM-powered VA interface for effective information collection. (2) For health providers, we built an LLM-based dashboard to summarize and present important health information based on older adults' conversations with the VA. We further conducted two user studies with older adults and providers to evaluate the usability of the system. The results showed that Talk2Care could facilitate the communication process, enrich the health information collected from older adults, and considerably save providers' efforts and time. We envision our work as an initial exploration of LLMs' capability in the intersection of healthcare and interpersonal communication.Comment: Under submission to CHI202

Suburban encroachment is a growing concern for many National Guard training installations. The Ethan Allen. Firing Range and Camp Johnson, Vermont, are either experiencing or are completely enclosed by urban encroachment. The objective of this study was to analyze the trends of suburban growth within Chittenden County, Vermont, to evaluate growth and explore future training site viability of the Ethan Allen Firing Range and Camp Johnson. This study focused on historical data, recent real estate transactions, population projections, and county plans for growth. Using historical and contemporary data, I developed a predictive model of suburban encroachment on Camp Johnson and the Ethan Allen firing Range facilities by residential and commercial development. This model may assist land managers make decisions and illustrate the viability of these installations as National Guard training sites. This model may also be applied to other installations with similar concerns

Developing Biodiversity Protection Strategies for Urban Greenspace in Melbourne

    Get PDF
The industry surrounding land management and conservation in Melbourne consists of many stakeholders from multiple organizations. The goal of this project was to increase the industry’s communication to better promote land management and consideration for biodiversity protection. To develop an understanding of those involved and the current state of land management, we conducted interviews with stakeholders and researched the region’s recent environmental history, and its current and past land management practices. Working with the Port Phillip EcoCentre, we developed a framework containing information on common problems and effective methods for combating issues we found among many groups. Finally, we proposed different ways the framework could be implemented in the future
