    Geometric, Semantic, and System-Level Scene Understanding for Improved Construction and Operation of the Built Environment

    Recent advances in robotics and enabling fields such as computer vision, deep learning, and low-latency data passing offer significant potential for developing efficient and low-cost solutions for improved construction and operation of the built environment. Examples of such potential solutions include the introduction of automation in environment monitoring, infrastructure inspections, asset management, and building performance analyses. In an effort to advance the fundamental computational building blocks for such applications, this dissertation explored three categories of scene understanding capabilities: 1) Localization and mapping for geometric scene understanding that enables a mobile agent (e.g., robot) to locate itself in an environment, map the geometry of the environment, and navigate through it; 2) Object recognition for semantic scene understanding that allows for automatic asset information extraction for asset tracking and resource management; 3) Distributed coupling analysis for system-level scene understanding that allows for discovery of interdependencies between different built-environment processes for system-level performance analyses and response-planning. First, this dissertation advanced Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) techniques for convenient and low-cost locating capabilities compared with previous work. To provide a versatile Real-Time Location System (RTLS), an occupancy grid mapping enhanced visual SLAM (vSLAM) was developed to support path planning and continuous navigation that cannot be implemented directly on vSLAM’s original feature map. The system’s localization accuracy was experimentally evaluated with a set of visual landmarks. The achieved marker position measurement accuracy ranges from 0.039m to 0.186m, proving the method’s feasibility and applicability in providing real-time localization for a wide range of applications. In addition, a Self-Adaptive Feature Transform (SAFT) was proposed to improve such an RTLS’s robustness in challenging environments. As an example implementation, the SAFT descriptor was implemented with a learning-based descriptor and integrated into a vSLAM for experimentation. The evaluation results on two public datasets proved the feasibility and effectiveness of SAFT in improving the matching performance of learning-based descriptors for locating applications. Second, this dissertation explored vision-based 1D barcode marker extraction for automated object recognition and asset tracking that is more convenient and efficient than the traditional methods of using barcode or asset scanners. As an example application in inventory management, a 1D barcode extraction framework was designed to extract 1D barcodes from video scan of a built environment. The performance of the framework was evaluated with video scan data collected from an active logistics warehouse near Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), demonstrating its applicability in automating inventory tracking and management applications. Finally, this dissertation explored distributed coupling analysis for understanding interdependencies between processes affecting the built environment and its occupants, allowing for accurate performance and response analyses compared with previous research. In this research, a Lightweight Communications and Marshalling (LCM)-based distributed coupling analysis framework and a message wrapper were designed.     Robotics software frameworks for multi-agent robotic systems development

    Robotics is an area of research in which the paradigm of Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) can prove to be highly useful. Multi-Agent Systems come in the form of cooperative robots in a team, sensor networks based on mobile robots, and robots in Intelligent Environments, to name but a few. However, the development of Multi-Agent Robotic Systems (MARS) still presents major challenges. Over the past decade, a high number of Robotics Software Frameworks (RSFs) have appeared which propose some solutions to the most recurrent problems in robotics. Some of these frameworks, such as ROS, YARP, OROCOS, ORCA, Open-RTM, and Open-RDK, possess certain characteristics and provide the basic infrastructure necessary for the development of MARS.     Exploring Robot Teleoperation in Virtual Reality

    This thesis presents research on VR-based robot teleoperation with a focus on remote environment visualisation in virtual reality, the effects of remote environment reconstruction scale in virtual reality on the human-operator's ability to control the robot and human-operator's visual attention patterns when teleoperating a robot from virtual reality. A VR-based robot teleoperation framework was developed, it is compatible with various robotic systems and cameras, allowing for teleoperation and supervised control with any ROS-compatible robot and visualisation of the environment through any ROS-compatible RGB and RGBD cameras. The framework includes mapping, segmentation, tactile exploration, and non-physically demanding VR interface navigation and controls through any Unity-compatible VR headset and controllers or haptic devices. Point clouds are a common way to visualise remote environments in 3D, but they often have distortions and occlusions, making it difficult to accurately represent objects' textures. This can lead to poor decision-making during teleoperation if objects are inaccurately represented in the VR reconstruction. A study using an end-effector-mounted RGBD camera with OctoMap mapping of the remote environment was conducted to explore the remote environment with fewer point cloud distortions and occlusions while using a relatively small bandwidth. Additionally, a tactile exploration study proposed a novel method for visually presenting information about objects' materials in the VR interface, to improve the operator's decision-making and address the challenges of point cloud visualisation. Two studies have been conducted to understand the effect of virtual world dynamic scaling on teleoperation flow. The first study investigated the use of rate mode control with constant and variable mapping of the operator's joystick position to the speed (rate) of the robot's end-effector, depending on the virtual world scale. The results showed that variable mapping allowed participants to teleoperate the robot more effectively but at the cost of increased perceived workload. The second study compared how operators used a virtual world scale in supervised control, comparing the virtual world scale of participants at the beginning and end of a 3-day experiment. The results showed that as operators got better at the task they as a group used a different virtual world scale, and participants' prior video gaming experience also affected the virtual world scale chosen by operators. Similarly, the human-operator's visual attention study has investigated how their visual attention changes as they become better at teleoperating a robot using the framework. The results revealed the most important objects in the VR reconstructed remote environment as indicated by operators' visual attention patterns as well as their visual priorities shifts as they got better at teleoperating the robot. The study also demonstrated that operators’ prior video gaming experience affects their ability to teleoperate the robot and their visual attention behaviours
