    PointMap: A real-time memory-based learning system with on-line and post-training pruning

Also published in the International Journal of Hybrid Intelligent Systems, Volume 1, January, 2004A memory-based learning system called PointMap is a simple and computationally efficient extension of Condensed Nearest Neighbor that allows the user to limit the number of exemplars stored during incremental learning. PointMap evaluates the information value of coding nodes during training, and uses this index to prune uninformative nodes either on-line or after training. These pruning methods allow the user to control both a priori code size and sensitivity to detail in the training data, as well as to determine the code size necessary for accurate performance on a given data set. Coding and pruning computations are local in space, with only the nearest coded neighbor available for comparison with the input; and in time, with only the current input available during coding. Pruning helps solve common problems of traditional memory-based learning systems: large memory requirements, their accompanying slow on-line computations, and sensitivity to noise. PointMap copes with the curse of dimensionality by considering multiple nearest neighbors during testing without increasing the complexity of the training process or the stored code. The performance of PointMap is compared to that of a group of sixteen nearest-neighbor systems on benchmark problems. This research was supported by grants from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR F49620-98-l-0108, F49620-0l-l-0397, and F49620-0l-l-0423) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR N00014-0l-l-0624)

Associate Professor Rajiv Khosla Business Intelligence Institute and Business Systems Knowledge Modeling Laboratory (http://www.latrobe.edu.au/bskm) School of Business, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Victoria – 3086, Australia E-Mail: [email protected] of the primary reasons identified for the failure of existing knowledge management solutions has been that knowledge management tools and research have primarily been designed around technology push-models as against strategy pull-models. In an era where organizations are undergoing rapid and discontinuous change it is imperative that knowledge management systems and organizational entities like CoPs that facilitate knowledge management and organizational transformation are more closely aligned with business strategies and goals of an organization. This would enable organizations to respond more quickly to changing business environments and corresponding change in their knowledge management needs from time to time. This seminar presents a strategy-pull approach for Modeling and Design of CoPs-centered Knowledge Management Systems to facilitate organizational transformation. Among other aspects the seminar will focus on definition of dimensions and criteria for defining CoPs in an organization, application of fuzzy integral techniques to rank 16 criteria employed by CoPs to engage in knowledge management. From a knowledge management and organizational transformation perspective this approach will enable a more direct relationship between business strategy, CoPs and Knowledge Management solutions.published_or_final_versionCentre for Information Technology in Education, University of Hong Kon

BASA: An improved hybrid bees algorithm for the single machine scheduling with early/tardy jobs

[EN] In this paper, we present a novel hybrid meta-heuristic by enhancing the Basic Bees Algorithm through the integration of a local search method namely Simulated Annealing and Variable Neighbourhood Search like algorithm. The resulted hybrid bees algorithm (BASA) is used to solve the Single Machine Scheduling Problem with Early/Tardy jobs, where the generated outcomes are compared against the Basic Bees Algorithm (BA), and against some stat-of-the-art meta-heuristics. Computational results reveal that our proposed framework outperforms the Basic Bees Algorithm, and demonstrates a competitive performance compared with some algorithms extracted from the literature.Abdessemed, AA.; Mouss, LH.; Benaggoune, K. AI and OR in management of operations: history and trends

    Get PDF
The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques. The trends over the last decade are identified, discussed with respect to expected trends and directions for future work suggested

Optimal analog wavelet bases construction using hybrid optimization algorithm

    Get PDF
An approach for the construction of optimal analog wavelet bases is presented. First, the definition of an analog wavelet is given. Based on the definition and the least-squares error criterion, a general framework for designing optimal analog wavelet bases is established, which is one of difficult nonlinear constrained optimization problems. Then, to solve this problem, a hybrid algorithm by combining chaotic map particle swarm optimization (CPSO) with local sequential quadratic programming (SQP) is proposed. CPSO is an improved PSO in which the saw tooth chaotic map is used to raise its global search ability. CPSO is a global optimizer to search the estimates of the global solution, while the SQP is employed for the local search and refining the estimates. Benefiting from good global search ability of CPSO and powerful local search ability of SQP, a high-precision global optimum in this problem can be gained. Finally, a series of optimal analog wavelet bases are constructed using the hybrid algorithm. The proposed method is tested for various wavelet bases and the improved performance is compared with previous works.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are demanding increasing changes in manufacturing environments. Enterprises are required to constantly redesign their products and continuously reconfigure their manufacturing systems. Traditional approaches to manufacturing systems do not fully satisfy this new situation. Many authors have proposed that artificial intelligence will bring the flexibility and efficiency needed by manufacturing systems. This paper is a review of artificial intelligence techniques used in manufacturing systems. The paper first defines the components of a simplified intelligent manufacturing systems (IMS), the different Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to be considered and then shows how these AI techniques are used for the components of IMS

Overview of Dynamic Facility Layout Planning as a Sustainability Strategy

[EN] The facility layout design problem is significantly relevant within the business operations strategies framework and has emerged as an alternate strategy towards supply chain sustainability. However, its wide coverage in the scientific literature has focused mainly on the static planning approach and disregarded the dynamic approach, which is very useful in real-world applications. In this context, the present article offers a literature review of the dynamic facility layout problem (DFLP). First, a taxonomy of the reviewed papers is proposed based on the problem formulation current trends (related to the problem type, planning phase, planning approach, number of facilities, number of floors, number of departments, space consideration, department shape, department dimensions, department area, and materials handling configuration); the mathematical modeling approach (regarding the type of model, type of objective function, type of constraints, nature of market demand, type of data, and distance metric), and the considered solution approach. Then, the extent to which recent research into DFLP has contributed to supply chain sustainability by addressing its three performance dimensions (economic, environmental, social) is described. Finally, some future research guidelines are provided. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities Project CADS4.0, grant number RTI2018-101344-B-I00; and the Valencian Community ERDF Programme 2014-2020, grant number IDIFEDER/2018/025.Pérez-Gosende, P.; Mula, J.; Díaz-Madroñero Boluda, FM.
