Comprehensive Performance Analysis of RPL Objective Functions in IoT Networks
As the movement for a vast implementation of IoT networks is rapidly accelerating, so many researchers are working to analyze the performance of RPL, the widely-used routing protocol for wireless sensor networks. The analysis usually involves a small number of metrics studied under a limited number of scenarios. In this paper however, we provide a comprehensive study for the performance of the two objective functions used in RPL; MRHOF and OF0, using the Cooja simulator in Contiki operating system. Using static-grid and mobile-random topologies with 25, 49, and 81 sender nodes including one sink node. Each topology was tested with three transmission ranges of 11, 20, and 50 meters to simulate sparse, moderate and dense networks. The selected metrics are convergence time, changes in DoDAG tree structures, average churn in the network, Average Power Consumption, Average Listen Duty Cycle, Average Transmit Duty Cycle, Average received packets, average lost packets, average duplicate packets, and average hop count. In fixed networks, the results show that OF0 usually perform better than MRHOF in terms of Energy Consumption, Convergence Time in the Static-Grid Topology, Listen Duty Cycle, and Transmit Duty Cycle
With the advent of new services based on IP, the need for bandwidth grows rapidly at the Internet backbones. The need of carry even more traffic and keep costs as lower as possible, points to new solutions with requirements of escalability, flexibility, low cost and easy of operation. Today, to carry this traffic in an efficient way and with low cost has been a great challenge, specially with the current infrastructure based in four layers. Some proposals have appeared to address these issues. Among them the GMPLS is distinguished. The GMPLS and its extensions to the routing and signaling comes to setting itself as an excellent solution to address the current problems found in the management and provisioning of the great ISPs.Com o advento de novos serviços baseadas em IP, a demanda por largura de banda nos backbones de internet cresce em ritmo acelerado. Efficient Distributed Solution for MPLS Fast Reroute
As service providers move more applications to their IP/MPLS (Multiple Protocol Label Switching) networks, rapid restoration upon failure becomes more and more crucial. Recently MPLS fast reroute has attracted lots of attention as it was designed to meet the needs of real-time applications, such as voice over IP. MPLS fast reroute achieves rapid restoration by computing and signaling backup label switched paths (LSP) in advance and re-directing traffic as close to failure point as possible. To provide a guarantee of failure restoration, extra bandwidth has to be reserved on backup LSPs. To improve the bandwidth utilization, path-merging technique was proposed to allow bandwidth sharing on common links among a service LSP and its backup LSPs. However, the sharing is very limited. In this paper, we provide efficient distributed solution, which would allow much broader bandwidth sharing among any backup LSPs from different service LSPs. We also propose an efficient algorithm for backup path selection to further increase the bandwidth sharing. The associated signaling extension for additional information distribution and collection is provided. To evaluate our solution, we compare its performance with the MPLS fast reroute proposal in IETF via simulation. The key figure-of-merit for restoration capacity efficiency is restoration overbuild, i.e., the ratio of restoration capacity to service capacity. Our simulation results show that our distributed solution reduces restoration overbuild from 2.5 to 1, and our optimized backup path selection further reduces restoration overbuild to about 0.5
Postprint (published version
Design and investigation of scalable multicast recursive protocols for wired and wireless ad hoc networks
The ever-increasing demand on content distribution and media streaming over the Internet has created the need for efficient methods of delivering information. One of the most promising approaches is based on multicasting. However, multicast solutions have to cope with several constraints as well as being able to perform in different environments such as wired, wireless, and ad hoc environments. Additionally, the scale and size of the Internet introduces another dimension of difficulty. Providing scalable multicast for mobile hosts in wireless environment and in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is a challenging problem. In
the past few years, several protocols have been proposed to efficient multicast solutions over the Internet, but these protocols did not give efficient solution for the scalability issue. In this thesis, scalable multicast protocols for wired, wireless and wireless ad hoc networks are
proposed and evaluated. These protocols share the idea of building up a multicast tree
gradually and recursively as join/leave of the multicast group members using a dynamic
branching node-based tree (DBT) concept. The DBT uses a pair of branching node messages
(BNMs). These messages traverse between a set of dynamically assigned branching node
routers (BNRs) to build the multicast tree. In the proposed protocols only the branching node routers (BNRs) carry the state information about their next BNRs rather than the multicast group members, which gives a fixed size of control packet header size as the multicast group size increases, i.e. a good solution to the problem of scalability. Also the process of join/leave of multicast group members is carried out locally which gives low join/leave latency.
The proposed protocols include: Scalable Recursive Multicast protocol (SReM) which is
proposed using the DBT concepts mentioned above, Mobile Scalable Recursive Multicast
protocol (MoSReM) which is an extension for SReM by taking into consideration the
mobility feature in the end hosts and performing an efficient roaming process, and finally, a Scalable Ad hoc Recursive Multicast protocol (SARM) to achieve the mobility feature for all nodes and performing an efficient solution for link recovery because of node movement. By cost analysis and an extensive simulation, the proposed protocols show many positive features like fixed size control messages, being scalable, low end to end delay, high packet rate delivery and low normalized routing overhead. The thesis concludes by discussing the
contributions of the proposed protocols on scalable multicast in the Internet society
Encaminhamento robusto em redes GMPLS sobre SDH
Mestrado em Engenharia Electrónica e TelecomunicaçõesEsta dissertação endereça o problema do encaminhamento robusto em redes
GMPLS (Generalised Multi-Protocol Label Switching) sobre SDH (Synchronous
Digital Hierarchy).
This work addresses the problem of survivable routing in SDH (Synchronous
Digital Hierarchy) networks with a GMPLS (Generalised Multi-Protocol Label
Switching) routing plane. Currently, routing in SDH networks is done in a
centralized way by management means. SDH networks have failure recovery
exigent requirements so that network survivability is tipically implemented with
protection mechanisms. The most simple and efficient mechanisms are the
ones that for each service VC (Virtual Container) also establish one protection
VC through a path that does not include any of the nodes of the service VC
(besides the origin and destination nodes). These mechanisms garanty the
network survivability in case of a single node or link failure.
The motivation to add the GMPLS control plane on SDH networks is to enable
these networks to establish VCs by signalling and to allow as far as possible
routing in a distributed way reducing the network dependence on centralized
management systems. The GMPLS routing protocols are based on minimum
cost routing where either a static or variable cost value is assigned to each
network link and the routing paths are given by the minimum cost paths. When
there are routing constraints, the determination of the minimal cost paths is
applied only to links that observe the constraints.
In this work, it is proposed a strategy of cost assignement that depends not
only on the link load but also of the number and type of VCs that the link
suppports at each time. By simulation, it is shown that this strategy has better
performance than the traditional strategies of a static cost inversely proportional
to link capacity or of a cost that is proportional to link load at each time.
The proposed strategies use a routing algorithm that determines a minimal cost
node-disjoint pair of paths in the establishment of the pair service VC and
protection VC.
Finally, it is proposed an additional centralized scheme that when one VC is
released, all protection VCs are recalculated in order to reduce the network
overall blocking probability. This scheme allows an additional performance
improvement and does not cause any service disruption because in normal
operation the service VC’s are the only ones supporting traffic.
The performance of all routing algorithms are determined by simulation with a
discret event simulator developed for this purpose
recomendação do padrão FRF.12.
Service) Diffserv; Compressão de cabeçalho RTP (Real Time Protocol) - cRTP;
