MeLinDa: an interlinking framework for the web of data
The web of data consists of data published on the web in such a way that they
can be interpreted and connected together. It is thus critical to establish
links between these data, both for the web of data and for the semantic web
that it contributes to feed. We consider here the various techniques developed
for that purpose and analyze their commonalities and differences. We propose a
general framework and show how the diverse techniques fit in the framework.
From this framework we consider the relation between data interlinking and
ontology matching. Although, they can be considered similar at a certain level
(they both relate formal entities), they serve different purposes, but would
find a mutual benefit at collaborating. We thus present a scheme under which it
is possible for data linking tools to take advantage of ontology alignments.Comment: N° RR-7691 (2011
Ontology: A Linked Data Hub for Mathematics
In this paper, we present an ontology of mathematical knowledge concepts that
covers a wide range of the fields of mathematics and introduces a balanced
representation between comprehensive and sensible models. We demonstrate the
applications of this representation in information extraction, semantic search,
and education. We argue that the ontology can be a core of future integration
of math-aware data sets in the Web of Data and, therefore, provide mappings
onto relevant datasets, such as DBpedia and ScienceWISE.Comment: 15 pages, 6 images, 1 table, Knowledge Engineering and the Semantic

Privacy-Preserving Reengineering of Model-View-Controller Application Architectures Using Linked Data
When a legacy system’s software architecture cannot be redesigned, implementing
additional privacy requirements is often complex, unreliable and
costly to maintain. This paper presents a privacy-by-design approach to
reengineer web applications as linked data-enabled and implement access
control and privacy preservation properties. The method is based on the
knowledge of the application architecture, which for the Web of data is
commonly designed on the basis of a model-view-controller pattern. Whereas
wrapping techniques commonly used to link data of web applications duplicate
the security source code, the new approach allows for the controlled
disclosure of an application’s data, while preserving non-functional properties
such as privacy preservation. The solution has been implemented
and compared with existing linked data frameworks in terms of reliability,
maintainability and complexity
Linked Data - the story so far
The term “Linked Data” refers to a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the Web. These best practices have been adopted by an increasing number of data providers over the last three years, leading to the creation of a global data space containing billions of assertions— the Web of Data. In this article, the authors present the concept and technical principles of Linked Data, and situate these within the broader context of related technological developments. They describe progress to date in publishing Linked Data on the Web, review applications that have been developed to exploit the Web of Data, and map out a research agenda for the Linked Data community as it moves forward
Retrieval, crawling and fusion of entity-centric data on the web
While the Web of (entity-centric) data has seen tremendous growth over the past years, take-up and re-use is still limited. Data vary heavily with respect to their scale, quality, coverage or dynamics, what poses challenges for tasks such as entity retrieval or search. This chapter provides an overview of approaches to deal with the increasing heterogeneity of Web data. On the one hand, recommendation, linking, profiling and retrieval can provide efficient means to enable discovery and search of entity-centric data, specifically when dealing with traditional knowledge graphs and linked data. On the other hand, embedded markup such as Microdata and RDFa has emerged a novel, Web-scale source of entitycentric knowledge. While markup has seen increasing adoption over the last few years, driven by initiatives such as schema.org, it constitutes an increasingly important source of entity-centric data on the Web, being in the same order of magnitude as the Web itself with regards to dynamics and scale. To this end, markup data lends itself as a data source for aiding tasks such as knowledge base augmentation, where data fusion techniques are required to address the inherent characteristics of markup data, such as its redundancy, heterogeneity and lack of links. Future directions are concerned with the exploitation of the complementary nature of markup data and traditional knowledge graphs. Negotiating Reality
Our understanding of research through design is demonstrated by a close examination of the methods used in the project lifeClipper2. This design research project investigates the applicability of immersive outdoor Augmented Reality (AR). lifeClipper2 offers an audiovisual walking experience in a virtually extended public space and focuses on audiovisual perception as well as on the development of the appropriate technology. The project involves contributions of partners from different fields of research. Thus, lifeClipper2 is able to test the potential of AR for visualizing architecture and archaeological information and to challenge our understanding of perception and interaction. Using examples from our research, the paper reflects on how scenario design contributes to the production of design knowledge and explores the possibilities and variations of AR. Finally, the paper drafts our approach to design research. The three tenets of our work are: the use of scenarios as a tool of interdisciplinary research, the experimental exploration of media and the intention to make design knowledge explicit.

Text-based Semantic Annotation Service for Multimedia Content in the Esperonto project
Within the Esperonto project, an integration of NLP, ontologies and other knowledge bases, is being performed with the goal to implement a semantic annotation service that upgrades the actual Web towards the emerging Semantic Web. Research is being currently conducted on how to apply the Esperonto semantic annotation service to text material associated with still images in web pages. In doing so, the project will allow for semantic querying of still images in the web, but also (automatically) create a large set of text-based semantic annotations of still images, which can be used by the Multimedia community in order to support the task of content indexing of image material, possibly combining the Esperonto type of annotations with the annotations resulting from image analysis
