Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks: An Overview of Game-Theoretic Approaches
An overview of game-theoretic approaches to energy-efficient resource
allocation in wireless networks is presented. Focusing on multiple-access
networks, it is demonstrated that game theory can be used as an effective tool
to study resource allocation in wireless networks with quality-of-service (QoS)
constraints. A family of non-cooperative (distributed) games is presented in
which each user seeks to choose a strategy that maximizes its own utility while
satisfying its QoS requirements. The utility function considered here measures
the number of reliable bits that are transmitted per joule of energy consumed
and, hence, is particulary suitable for energy-constrained networks. The
actions available to each user in trying to maximize its own utility are at
least the choice of the transmit power and, depending on the situation, the
user may also be able to choose its transmission rate, modulation, packet size,
multiuser receiver, multi-antenna processing algorithm, or carrier allocation
strategy. The best-response strategy and Nash equilibrium for each game is
presented. Using this game-theoretic framework, the effects of power control,
rate control, modulation, temporal and spatial signal processing, carrier
allocation strategy and delay QoS constraints on energy efficiency and network

Coalitional Games for Transmitter Cooperation in MIMO Multiple Access Channels
Cooperation between nodes sharing a wireless channel is becoming increasingly
necessary to achieve performance goals in a wireless network. The problem of
determining the feasibility and stability of cooperation between rational nodes
in a wireless network is of great importance in understanding cooperative
behavior. This paper addresses the stability of the grand coalition of
transmitters signaling over a multiple access channel using the framework of
cooperative game theory. The external interference experienced by each TX is
represented accurately by modeling the cooperation game between the TXs in
\emph{partition form}. Single user decoding and successive interference
cancelling strategies are examined at the receiver. In the absence of
coordination costs, the grand coalition is shown to be \emph{sum-rate optimal}
for both strategies. Transmitter cooperation is \emph{stable}, if and only if
the core of the game (the set of all divisions of grand coalition utility such
that no coalition deviates) is nonempty. Determining the stability of
cooperation is a co-NP-complete problem in general. For a single user decoding
receiver, transmitter cooperation is shown to be \emph{stable} at both high and
low SNRs, while for an interference cancelling receiver with a fixed decoding
order, cooperation is stable only at low SNRs and unstable at high SNR. When
time sharing is allowed between decoding orders, it is shown using an
approximate lower bound to the utility function that TX cooperation is also
stable at high SNRs. Thus, this paper demonstrates that ideal zero cost TX
cooperation over a MAC is stable and improves achievable rates for each

Cross-layer distributed power control: A repeated games formulation to improve the sum energy-efficiency
The main objective of this work is to improve the energy-efficiency (EE) of a
multiple access channel (MAC) system, through power control, in a distributed
manner. In contrast with many existing works on energy-efficient power control,
which ignore the possible presence of a queue at the transmitter, we consider a
new generalized cross-layer EE metric. This approach is relevant when the
transmitters have a non-zero energy cost even when the radiated power is zero
and takes into account the presence of a finite packet buffer and packet
arrival at the transmitter. As the Nash equilibrium (NE) is an
energy-inefficient solution, the present work aims at overcoming this deficit
by improving the global energy-efficiency. Indeed, as the considered system has
multiple agencies each with their own interest, the performance metric
reflecting the individual interest of each decision maker is the global
energy-efficiency defined then as the sum over individual energy-efficiencies.
Repeated games (RG) are investigated through the study of two dynamic games
(finite RG and discounted RG), whose equilibrium is defined when introducing a
new operating point (OP), Pareto-dominating the NE and relying only on
individual channel state information (CSI). Accordingly, closed-form
expressions of the minimum number of stages of the game for finite RG (FRG) and
the maximum discount factor of the discounted RG (DRG) were established. The
cross-layer model in the RG formulation leads to achieving a shorter minimum
number of stages in the FRG even for higher number of users. In addition, the
social welfare (sum of utilities) in the DRG decreases slightly with the
cross-layer model when the number of users increases while it is reduced
considerably with the Goodman model. Finally, we show that in real systems with
random packet arrivals, the cross-layer power control algorithm outperforms the

Energy-Efficient Power Control in Impulse Radio UWB Wireless Networks
In this paper, a game-theoretic model for studying power control for wireless
data networks in frequency-selective multipath environments is analyzed. The
uplink of an impulse-radio ultrawideband system is considered. The effects of
self-interference and multiple-access interference on the performance of
generic Rake receivers are investigated for synchronous systems. Focusing on
energy efficiency, a noncooperative game is proposed in which users in the
network are allowed to choose their transmit powers to maximize their own
utilities, and the Nash equilibrium for the proposed game is derived. It is
shown that, due to the frequency selective multipath, the noncooperative
solution is achieved at different signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios,
depending on the channel realization and the type of Rake receiver employed. A
large-system analysis is performed to derive explicit expressions for the
achieved utilities. The Pareto-optimal (cooperative) solution is also discussed

A Multi-Game Framework for Harmonized LTE-U and WiFi Coexistence over Unlicensed Bands
The introduction of LTE over unlicensed bands (LTE-U) will enable LTE base
stations (BSs) to boost their capacity and offload their traffic by exploiting
the underused unlicensed bands. However, to reap the benefits of LTE-U, it is
necessary to address various new challenges associated with LTE-U and WiFi
coexistence. In particular, new resource management techniques must be
developed to optimize the usage of the network resources while handling the
interdependence between WiFi and LTE users and ensuring that WiFi users are not
jeopardized. To this end, in this paper, a new game theoretic tool, dubbed as
\emph{multi-game} framework is proposed as a promising approach for modeling
resource allocation problems in LTE-U. In such a framework, multiple,
co-existing and coupled games across heterogeneous channels can be formulated
to capture the specific characteristics of LTE-U. Such games can be of
different properties and types but their outcomes are largely interdependent.
After introducing the basics of the multi-game framework, two classes of
algorithms are outlined to achieve the new solution concepts of multi-games.
Simulation results are then conducted to show how such a multi-game can
effectively capture the specific properties of LTE-U and make of it a
