Self-organization theory is an interdisciplinary scientific direction to improve the quality of acquired knowledge and skills. The article aims to study the development of interdisciplinary research activities among students based on self-organization theory. The study was conducted using an integrated approach, methods of analysis and synthesis, modeling, pedagogical experiments, and mathematical statistics. An elective course, “synergetic-interdisciplinary scientific theory”, and a model for preparing students for interdisciplinary research activities were developed and implemented. The knowledge and skills of 272 physics students in the Republic of Kazakhstan universities in control and experimental groups improved after the training. The knowledge highest level is observed among the experimental group students while studying the natural experiments’ theoretical aspects necessary for researching the natural objects’ sustainability. Experimental group students demonstrated better results in completing the task based on the acquired knowledge and skills. They rated the education quality significantly better on a short educational assessment scale. The results-developed course and the students’ preparing models for interdisciplinary research can be used in advanced courses for different specialties educators. Research perspectives could potentially contribute to the development of integrated subjects and interdisciplinary programs in natural sciences and humanities

The Citation Field of Evolutionary Economics

Evolutionary economics has developed into an academic field of its own, institutionalized around, amongst others, the Journal of Evolutionary Economics (JEE). This paper analyzes the way and extent to which evolutionary economics has become an interdisciplinary journal, as its aim was: a journal that is indispensable in the exchange of expert knowledge on topics and using approaches that relate naturally with it. Analyzing citation data for the relevant academic field for the Journal of Evolutionary Economics, we use insights from scientometrics and social network analysis to find that, indeed, the JEE is a central player in this interdisciplinary field aiming mostly at understanding technological and regional dynamics. It does not, however, link firmly with the natural sciences (including biology) nor to management sciences, entrepreneurship, and organization studies. Another journal that could be perceived to have evolutionary acumen, the Journal of Economic Issues, does relate to heterodox economics journals and is relatively more involved in discussing issues of firm and industry organization. The JEE seems most keen to develop theoretical insights

EMOTIONAL CAPITAL AND COMMERCIALIZATION OF FEELINGS AT WORK: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

This paper presents an interdisciplinary framework between knowledge capital and emotional work as emergent concepts for business efficiency. When rationality is placed as a key point for business decision making, the emotional side of any organization would be considered as a weakness in any SWOT analysis. Econometric modeling or mathematical patterns would certainly characterize rational thinking. On the other hand, we should never forget that machines or logical judgments do not synthesize the supreme truth. Errors may be made when instinctive emotions interfere. However successful actions may be guided by sensitive thinking. The main objective of this study is to illustrate how emotions are put to corporate use and gain an exchange value from an economical point of view. An interdisciplinary model will shape an innovative approach for the use of emotions in the business environment: both emotional work and knowledge are attributes for efficiency when talking about human resources, their dynamics and potential for any organization.efficiency, emotional capital, emotional work, human resources.

An examination of interdisciplinary theory between cognitive categorization and knowledge organization

    Get PDF
This paper is a preliminary comparison of the theories used to represent concepts in the field of knowledge organization with similar theories that are used in the field of cognitive categorization. Both disciplines employ the same general types of conceptual representations, such as features, dimensions, labels and relationships. Both disciplines are also concerned with how people use these representations to organize and retrieve information. However, cognitive categorization is generally concerned with internal conceptual representations (ICRs), which are maintained in memory, while knowledge organization is generally concerned with external conceptual representations (ECRs), which are maintained outside of memory. This fundamental distinction has profound effects on how the representations are structured, accessed and maintained. This paper explores these differences and points out cases in which ICRs and ECRs may affect each other. This analysis will support future research that utilizes ICRs in the study and evaluation of ECRs

Aplicabilidade da Competência em Informação e da Organização do Conhecimento no processo de Gestão da Informação

In the current context of information production and access, organizations need to be able to handle the information they obtain, whether digital or analog. Therefore, there is a process known as information management, responsible for the collection, processing, storage and dissemination. It is argued that the steps of this management can be guided by informational competence and the organization of knowledge. Therefore, the following questions are raised: what is the importance of information competence and knowledge organization in information management? How do knowledge organization techniques and information competence contribute to information management? The objective is to reflect on the importance of informational competence and knowledge management for the development of intelligent information management, which meets the needs of contemporary organizations. This work is justified by interrelating the topics knowledge organization, information management and informational competence and its contribution to organizations, characterizing itself as an interdisciplinary theme. The discussions present the interrelationship between knowledge organization, informational competence and knowledge organization, in order to improve organizational processes. As final considerations, it is argued that the three proposed themes contribute to the application and improvement of information management, so that individuals construct knowledge

The role of self-transcending knowledge in Senge’s understanding of learning organizations Towards an interdisciplinary taxonomy of self-transcending knowledge

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of self-transcending knowledge as one of P. Senge’s common themes underpinning his five disciplines approach. It will be shown that the notions of vision, purpose and transcendence, especially self-transcendence are closely related to each other. However, the aspect of self-transcendence has not been covered well yet in the existing literature. That is why this paper is guided by the following research question: What does a consolidated, integrative and interdisciplinary concept of selftranscending knowledge look like, and what are its defining and unifying features and characteristics with respect to learning organizations? Design/methodology/approach – This conceptual paper draws on (both theoretical and empirical) interdisciplinary evidence from a wide variety of fields, such as organization studies, psychology, philosophy, learning organizations, cognitive science and innovation studies. Key authors from the field of selftranscending knowledge and their approaches will be discussed to develop a unified interdisciplinary concept of self-transcending knowledge and its possible applications, which will be demonstrated in a case study. Findings – Self-transcending knowledge turns out to be central in the fields of learning (organizations) and innovation, as it deals with future-oriented knowledge that is “not yet”, that transcends the boundaries of existing knowledge. It is based on self-detachment, the notion of potentials and the insight that novel knowledge is not only the result of a creative agent (or organization) but also can be found and cocreated through an attentive search in an unfolding reality. Originality/value – Existing literature in the field of P. Senge’s five disciplines (and beyond) does not offer a comprehensive concept of self-transcending knowledge. This paper addresses this issue by bringing together approaches from a wide range of fields related to this concept; it develops an interdisciplinary and coherent notion and taxonomy of self-transcending knowledge and shows its impact for learning organizations and innovation

Socio-Technical Perspective on Interdisciplinary Interactions During the Development of Complex Engineered Systems

    Get PDF
This study investigates interdisciplinary interactions that take place during the research, development, and early conceptual design phases in the design of large-scale complex engineered systems (LaCES) such as aerospace vehicles. These interactions, that take place throughout a large engineering development organization, become the initial conditions of the systems engineering process that ultimately leads to the development of a viable system. This paper summarizes some of the challenges and opportunities regarding social and organizational issues that emerged from a qualitative study using ethnographic and survey data. The analysis reveals several socio-technical couplings between the engineered system and the organization that creates it. Survey respondents noted the importance of interdisciplinary interactions and their benefits to the engineered system as well as substantial challenges in interdisciplinary interactions. Noted benefits included enhanced knowledge and problem mitigation and noted obstacles centered on organizational and human dynamics. Findings suggest that addressing the social challenges may be a critical need in enabling interdisciplinary interaction

Objective. This study aimed at analyzing one of the most noting characterizations that Information Science (IS) has receiver over the history, such as the positions that sustain it. Design/Methodology/Approach. Through a bibliographic research, there were revised proposals from two relevant authors (Harold Borko y Tefko Saracevic) to deepen in the IS’ interdisciplinary character. The temporary circumstances in which the IS’ interdisciplinary project is registered was used as an analysis tool. Results/Discussion. The incidence of interdisciplinary movement emerged as a new form of knowledge organization during the foundational years, such as the interdisciplinary character that the IS’ founders assigned to the field. Conclusions. From the foundational years, IS was proposed as an interdisciplinary science. Harold Borko and Tefko Saracevic were the significant authors in solidify such assumed characterization. The interdisciplinary practice and theory is one of the most remarked elements of the intellectual tasks of our times. From the beginning this has been a constant in the informational field. Originality/Value. This study has a distinctive note, an approach to the first two most relevant characterizations of IS and its connection with the interdisciplinary movement initiated in the same historical circumstances
