This research examines the concept of interactive and participatory journalism in television news through the lens of Gatekeeping Theory. It aims to shine a light on newsrooms that have been early adaptors in the trends and technologies of interactive content between journalists and their audiences and to explore what the managers and employees of those newsrooms believe has been successful, what has not been successful and what other journalists can learn from their experiences. The researcher employed in depth interviews with 12 employees in 3 newsrooms in the U.S. The interviewees included general managers, news directors, anchors and digital producers. The research identified three major themes that contributed to the success of exploratory interactive efforts: newsroom culture, a focus on the audience, and finding balance. Each of these themes ultimately serves the same goal of the survival of television news in a rapidly changing media landscape. This research will expand the field of knowledge of interactive journalism, and it has valuable information for professional journalists who hope to incorporate interactive efforts into their work

Cyber-journalism and the news on terrestrial digital television (TDT) share numerous characteristics, such as the redefinition of the processes of production and of the responsibilities of media professionals, or the possibility of exploring genres and formats heretofore unexplored by means of the language of multimedia. However, in contrast to what is happening on the Internet, TDT in Spain carries along with it some problems which prevent it from functioning as a fully interactive medium when it comes to transmitting the news to its audience. Some of these drawbacks are intrinsic in nature; others derive from the configuration of digital television in the first phase of its evolution in this country. Many authors share the view that TDT is a first-class way of consolidating the Information Society. Nevertheless, this study, starting from a comparison with the dynamic of cyber-newspapers, describes some of the technological, conceptual and economic limitations which it must first overcome. Media Use and International Engagement

The internet’s interactive composition and fluid interface has changed the way in which individuals acquire information, and has given consumers of news media a means to access a large amount of information regarding political content and international issues. Furthermore, the internet provides users the choice of the information that they consume, which contrasts the rigid, predetermined nature of televised news media. Because of this, this research project will compare the effects of both television and internet media on engagement in international affairs in order to examine the difference between old and new forms of media. Through a statistical analysis of data from the 2008 National Election Study, this project will test the hypothesis that those who acquire news media online are more likely to prioritize foreign policy issues of promoting human rights and combatting global hunger than consumers of television media
