    Developmental Bayesian Optimization of Black-Box with Visual Similarity-Based Transfer Learning

    We present a developmental framework based on a long-term memory and reasoning mechanisms (Vision Similarity and Bayesian Optimisation). This architecture allows a robot to optimize autonomously hyper-parameters that need to be tuned from any action and/or vision module, treated as a black-box. The learning can take advantage of past experiences (stored in the episodic and procedural memories) in order to warm-start the exploration using a set of hyper-parameters previously optimized from objects similar to the new unknown one (stored in a semantic memory). As example, the system has been used to optimized 9 continuous hyper-parameters of a professional software (Kamido) both in simulation and with a real robot (industrial robotic arm Fanuc) with a total of 13 different objects. The robot is able to find a good object-specific optimization in 68 (simulation) or 40 (real) trials. In simulation, we demonstrate the benefit of the transfer learning based on visual similarity, as opposed to an amnesic learning (i.e. learning from scratch all the time). Moreover, with the real robot, we show that the method consistently outperforms the manual optimization from an expert with less than 2 hours of training time to achieve more than 88% of success

    Simulation and Visualization of Thermal Metaphor in a Virtual Environment for Thermal Building Assessment

The importance of energy efficiency and integration of advances in building design and VR technology have lead this research to focus on thermal simulation results visualized in a virtual environment to optimize building design, particularly concerning heritage buildings. The emphasis is on the representation of thermal data of a room simulated in a virtual environment (VE) in order to improve the ways in which thermal analysis data are presented to the building stakeholder, with the aim of increasing accuracy and efficiency. The approach is to present more immersive thermal simulation and to project the calculation results in projective displays particularly in Immersion room (CAVE-like). The main idea concerning the experiment is to provide an instrument of visualization and interaction concerning the thermal conditions in a virtual building. Thus the user can immerge, interact, and perceive the impact of the modifications generated by the system, regarding the thermal simulation results.     Towards Zero-Waste Furniture Design

    In traditional design, shapes are first conceived, and then fabricated. While this decoupling simplifies the design process, it can result in inefficient material usage, especially where off-cut pieces are hard to reuse. The designer, in absence of explicit feedback on material usage remains helpless to effectively adapt the design -- even though design variabilities exist. In this paper, we investigate {\em waste minimizing furniture design} wherein based on the current design, the user is presented with design variations that result in more effective usage of materials. Technically, we dynamically analyze material space layout to determine {\em which} parts to change and {\em how}, while maintaining original design intent specified in the form of design constraints. We evaluate the approach on simple and complex furniture design scenarios, and demonstrate effective material usage that is difficult, if not impossible, to achieve without computational support

    Key Challenges and Opportunities in Hull Form Design Optimisation for Marine and Offshore Applications

    New environmental regulations and volatile fuel prices have resulted in an ever-increasing need for reduction in carbon emission and fuel consumption. Designs of marine and offshore vessels are more demanding with complex operating requirements and oil and gas exploration venturing into deeper waters and hasher environments. Combinations of these factors have led to the need to optimise the design of the hull for the marine and offshore industry. The contribution of this paper is threefold. Firstly, the paper provides a comprehensive review of the state-ofthe- art techniques in hull form design. Specifically, it analyses geometry modelling, shape transformation, optimisation and performance evaluation. Strengths and weaknesses of existing solutions are also discussed. Secondly, key challenges of hull form optimisation specific to the design of marine and offshore vessels are identified and analysed. Thirdly, future trends in performing hull form design optimisation are investigated and possible solutions proposed. A case study on the design optimisation of bulbous bow for passenger ferry vessel to reduce wavemaking resistance is presented using NAPA software. Lastly, main issues and challenges are discussed to stimulate further ideas on future developments in this area, including the use of parallel computing and machine intelligence

    HYDRA: Distributed Multi-Objective Optimization for Designers

    Architectural design problems can be quite involved, as there is a plethora of – usually conflicting – criteria that one has to address in order to find an optimal, performative solution. Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) techniques can thus prove very useful, as they provide solution spaces which can traverse the different trade-offs of convoluted design options. Nevertheless, they are not widely used as (a) they are computationally expensive and (b) the resulting solution space can be proven difficult to visualize and navigate, particularly when dealing with higher dimensional spaces. This paper will present a system, which merges bespoke multi-objective optimization with a parametric CAD system, enhanced by supercomputing, into a single, coherent workflow, in order to address the above issues. The system architecture ensures optimal use of existing compute resources and enables massive performance speed-up, allowing for fast review and delivery cycles. The application aims to provide architects, designers and engineers with a better understanding of the design space, aiding the decision-making process by procuring tangible data from different objectives and finally providing fit (and sometimes unforeseen) solutions to a design problem. This is primarily achieved by a graphical interface of easy to navigate solution spaces of design options, derived from their respective Pareto fronts, in the form of a web-based interactive dashboard. Since understanding high-dimensionality data is a difficult task, multivariate analysis techniques were implemented to post-process the data before displaying it to end users. Visual Data Mining (VDM) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques were incorporated to facilitate knowledge discovery and exploration of large sets of design options at an early design stage. The system is demonstrated and assessed on an applied design case study of a master-planning project, where the benefits of the process are more evident, especially due to its complexity and size

    Discrete event simulation and virtual reality use in industry: new opportunities and future trends

    This paper reviews the area of combined discrete event simulation (DES) and virtual reality (VR) use within industry. While establishing a state of the art for progress in this area, this paper makes the case for VR DES as the vehicle of choice for complex data analysis through interactive simulation models, highlighting both its advantages and current limitations. This paper reviews active research topics such as VR and DES real-time integration, communication protocols, system design considerations, model validation, and applications of VR and DES. While summarizing future research directions for this technology combination, the case is made for smart factory adoption of VR DES as a new platform for scenario testing and decision making. It is put that in order for VR DES to fully meet the visualization requirements of both Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet visions of digital manufacturing, further research is required in the areas of lower latency image processing, DES delivery as a service, gesture recognition for VR DES interaction, and linkage of DES to real-time data streams and Big Data sets
