Painterly rendering techniques: A state-of-the-art review of current approaches

    Get PDF
In this publication we will look at the different methods presented over the past few decades which attempt to recreate digital paintings. While previous surveys concentrate on the broader subject of non-photorealistic rendering, the focus of this paper is firmly placed on painterly rendering techniques. We compare different methods used to produce different output painting styles such as abstract, colour pencil, watercolour, oriental, oil and pastel. Whereas some methods demand a high level of interaction using a skilled artist, others require simple parameters provided by a user with little or no artistic experience. Many methods attempt to provide more automation with the use of varying forms of reference data. This reference data can range from still photographs, video, 3D polygonal meshes or even 3D point clouds. The techniques presented here endeavour to provide tools and styles that are not traditionally available to an artist. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

    Stroke Based Painterly Rendering

    Get PDF
International audienceMany traditional art forms are produced by an artist sequentially placing a set of marks, such as brush strokes, on a canvas. Stroke based Rendering (SBR) is inspired by this process, and underpins many early and contemporary Artistic Stylization algorithms. This Chapter outlines the origins of SBR, and describes key algorithms for placement of brush strokes to create painterly renderings from source images. The chapter explores both local greedy, and global optimization based approaches to stroke placement. The issue of creative control in SBR is also briefly discussed

A Process to Create Dynamic Landscape Paintings Using Barycentric Shading with Control Paintings

    Get PDF
In this work, we present a process that uses a Barycentric shading method to create dynamic landscape paintings that change based on the time of day. Our process allows for the creation of dynamic paintings for any time of the day using simply a limited number of control paintings. To create a proof of concept, we have used landscape paintings of Edgar Payne, one of the leading landscape painters of the American West. His specific style of painting that blends Impressionism with the style of other painters of the AmericanWest is particularly appropriate for the demonstration of the power of our Barycentric shading method

    Hyper-Realist Rendering: A Theoretical Framework

This is the first paper in a series on hyper-realist rendering. In this paper, we introduce the concept of hyper-realist rendering and present a theoretical framework to obtain hyper-realist images. We are using the term Hyper-realism as an umbrella word that captures all types of visual artifacts that can evoke an impression of reality. The hyper-realist artifacts are visual representations that are not necessarily created by following logical and physical principles and can still be perceived as representations of reality. This idea stems from the principles of representational arts, which attain visually acceptable renderings of scenes without implementing strict physical laws of optics and materials. The objective of this work is to demonstrate that it is possible to obtain visually acceptable illusions of reality by employing such artistic approaches. With representational art methods, we can even obtain an alternate illusion of reality that looks more real even when it is not real. This paper demonstrates that it is common to create illusions of reality in visual arts with examples of paintings by representational artists. We propose an approach to obtain expressive local and global illuminations to obtain these stylistic illusions with a set of well-defined and formal methods.Comment: 20 page

Exploring a Parameterized Portrait Painting Space

    Get PDF
We overview our interdisciplinary work building parameterized knowledge domains and their authoring tools that allow for expression systems which move through a space of painterly portraiture. With new computational systems it is possible to conceptually dance, compose and paint in higher level conceptual spaces. We are interested in building art systems that support exploring these spaces and in particular report on our software-based artistic toolkit and resulting experiments using parameter spaces in face based new media portraiture. This system allows us to parameterize the open cognitive and vision-based methodology that human artists have intuitively evolved over centuries into a domain toolkit to explore aesthetic realizations and interdisciplinary questions about the act of portrait painting as well as the general creative process. These experiments and questions can be explored by traditional and new media artists, art historians, cognitive scientists and other scholars

Hybridization of silhouette rendering and pen-and-ink illustration of non-photorealistic rendering technique for 3D object

This study proposes a hybrid of Non-photorealistic Rendering techniques. Nonphotorealistic Rendering (NPR) covers one part in computer graphics that caters towards generating many kinds of 2D digital art style from 3D data, for instance output that looks like painting and drawing. NPR includes the painterly, interpretative, expressive and artistic styles, among others. NPR research deal with different issues such as the stylization that are driven by human perception, the science and art that were brought together and being harmonized with techniques used. Some of approaches used in NPR were discussed such as cartoon rendering, watercolour painting, silhouette rendering, penand- ink illustration and so on. A plan for hybridization of NPR techniques is proposed between silhouette rendering techniques and pen-and-ink illustration for this study. The integration process of these rendering techniques takes on the lighting mapping and also the construction of colour region of the model in order to ensure the pen-and-ink illustration texture can be implemented into the object. The evaluation process is based on the visualization of the image from the hybridization process. Based on findings, the hybridization of NPR technique was able to create interesting results and considered as an alternative in producing new variety of visualization image in NPR
