Handbook of solar-terrestrial data systems, version 1

    Get PDF
The interaction between the solar wind and the earth's magnetic field creates a large magnetic cavity which is termed the magnetosphere. Energy derived from the solar wind is ultimately dissipated by particle acceleration-precipitation and Joule heating in the magnetosphere-ionosphere. The rate of energy dissipation is highly variable, with peak levels during geomagnetic storms and substorms. The degree to which solar wind and magnetospheric conditions control the energy dissipation processes remains one of the major outstanding questions in magnetospheric physics. A conference on Solar Wind-Magnetospheric Coupling was convened to discuss these issues and this handbook is the result

UMA ANÁLISE MULTIMODAL DE PÔSTERES DO SERIADO TELEVISIVO AMERICAN HORROR STORY

    Get PDF
The present study, a multimodal genre analysis, investigates verbal and visual components of posters from the American Horror Story TV show in order to understand how this genre functions and maintains its social purpose. The corpus consists of three posters from the American Horror Story show, and each one stands for the first three seasons of the show. The Grammar of Visual Design (KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 2006) was used as analytical tool for the identification of meanings in visual language. Verbal language was analyzed through the recognition of information blocks (SWALES, 1990). Results showed that a mysterious atmosphere is built by representative and compositional meanings altogether. On the other hand, interactive meanings are responsible for the inviting and appealing features of posters, which aim at convincing people to watch the TV show.O presente trabalho, uma análise de gênero multimodal, investiga os componentes verbais e visuais de pôsteres do seriado televisivo American Horror Story (AHS), a fim de compreender como esse gênero funciona e mantém sua finalidade social.

An Open System for Collection and Automatic Recognition of Pottery through Neural Network Algorithms

    Get PDF
In the last ten years, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been applied in archaeology. The ArchAIDE project realised an AI-based application to recognise archaeological pottery. Pottery is of paramount importance for understanding archaeological contexts. However, recognition of ceramics is still a manual, time-consuming activity, reliant on analogue catalogues. The project developed two complementary machine-learning tools to propose identifications based on images captured on-site, for optimising and economising this process, while retaining key decision points necessary to create trusted results. One method relies on the shape of a potsherd; the other is based on decorative features. For the shape-based recognition, a novel deep-learning architecture was employed, integrating shape information from points along the inner and outer profile of a sherd. The decoration classifier is based on relatively standard architectures used in image recognition. In both cases, training the algorithms meant facing challenges related to real-world archaeological data: the scarcity of labelled data; extreme imbalance between instances of different categories; and the need to take note of minute differentiating features. Finally, the creation of a desktop and mobile application that integrates the AI classifiers provides an easy-to-use interface for pottery classification and storing pottery data

21st Century City Temperature Analogs in the United States

Decades of research now show that the planet is slowly warming and that this trend will affect life on Earth over the long term. Water supply, weather patterns, and disease are examples of the many ways in which climate change will directly affect humans. Mitigation planning efforts will require new ways of thinking about, visualizing, and analyzing the massive amounts of forecast data now available from a multitude of climate models. Various temperature-forecast models and datasets exist to help analyze climate change effects. This project converted one of those into a spatial database, extracted yearly averages for a selected set of United States cities, and used them to create lists of which cities’ temperatures are forecast to be most analogous to which others at various forecast years. A web application built with ESRI’s ArcGIS Server and Flex API visually linked these analogs to compare and contrast disparate geographic locations in new ways. A disciplined use of accepted design practices will allow this example to be easily adapted and extended in future analyses

Study to determine potential flight applications and human factors design guidelines for voice recognition and synthesis systems

    Get PDF
A study was conducted to determine potential commercial aircraft flight deck applications and implementation guidelines for voice recognition and synthesis. At first, a survey of voice recognition and synthesis technology was undertaken to develop a working knowledge base. Then, numerous potential aircraft and simulator flight deck voice applications were identified and each proposed application was rated on a number of criteria in order to achieve an overall payoff rating. The potential voice recognition applications fell into five general categories: programming, interrogation, data entry, switch and mode selection, and continuous/time-critical action control. The ratings of the first three categories showed the most promise of being beneficial to flight deck operations. Possible applications of voice synthesis systems were categorized as automatic or pilot selectable and many were rated as being potentially beneficial. In addition, voice system implementation guidelines and pertinent performance criteria are proposed. Finally, the findings of this study are compared with those made in a recent NASA study of a 1995 transport concept
