    Healthcare PANs: Personal Area Networks for trauma care and home care

    The first hour following the trauma is of crucial importance in trauma care. The sooner treatment begins, the better the ultimate outcome for the patient. Generally the initial treatment is handled by paramedical personnel arriving at the site of the accident with an ambulance. There is evidence to show that if the expertise of the on-site paramedic team can be supported by immediate and continuous access to and communication with the expert medical team at the hospital, patient outcomes can be improved. After care also influences the ultimate recovery of the patient. After-treatment follow up often occurs in-hospital in spite of the fact that care at home can offer more advantages and can accelerate recovery. Based on emerging and future wireless communication technologies, in a previous paper [1] we presented an initial vision of two future healthcare settings, supported by applications which we call Virtual Trauma Team and Virtual Homecare Team. The Virtual Trauma Team application involves high quality wireless multimedia communications between ambulance paramedics and the hospital facilitated by paramedic Body Area Networks (BANs) [2] and an ambulance-based Vehicle Area Network (VAN). The VAN supports bi-directional streaming audio and video communication between the ambulance and the hospital even when moving at speed. The clinical motivation for Virtual Trauma Team is to increase survival rates in trauma care. The Virtual Homecare Team application enables homecare coordinated by home nursing services and supported by the patient's PAN which consists of a patient BAN in combination with an ambient intelligent home environment. The homecare PAN provides intelligent monitoring and support functions and the possibility to ad hoc network to the visiting health professionals’ own BANs as well as high quality multimedia communication links to remote members of the virtual team. The motivation for Virtual Homecare Team is to improve quality of life and independence for patients by supporting care at home; the economic motivation is to replace expensive hospital-based care with homecare by virtual teams using wireless technology to support the patient and the carers. In this paper we develop the vision further and focus in particular on the concepts of personal and body area networks

In particular, the distribution of road hazard warning (RHW) messages to distant vehicles requires special mechanisms. In this case, the combination of direct communication between vehicles and the wide area coverage provided by cellular networks might be crucial not only for reducing the data transmission costs but also for improving the timeliness of ITS information. Moreover, the application of clustering and cluster head selection mechanisms among vehicles can increase the efficiency of hybrid vehicular and cellular communication networks. This paper introduces a novel cluster head selection technique for the distribution of RHW messages, and proposes an implementation of another legacy technique that was originally intended for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). This paper evaluates the performance of these techniques by the means of computer simulations in two scenarios with distinct congestion and propagation conditions. At the low layer, from the technical perspective, PCS is a 2G mobile communication technology operating at the 1900 MHz frequency range. At the upper layer, PCS is often used as an umbrella term that includes various wireless access and personal mobility services with the ultimate goal of enabling users to freely communicate with anyone at anytime and anywhere according to their demand. Ubiquitous PCS can be implemented by integrating the wireless and wireline systems on the basis of intelligent network (IN), which provides network functions of terminal and personal mobility. In this chapter, we focus on various aspects of PCS except location management. First we describe the motivation and technological evolution for personal communications. Then we introduce three key issues related to PCS: spectrum allocation, mobility, and standardization efforts. Since PCS involves several different communication technologies, we introduce its heterogeneous and distributed system architecture. IN is also described in detail because it plays a critical role in the development of PCS.     FAIR: Towards Impartial Resource Allocation for Intelligent Vehicles with Automotive Edge Computing

    The emerging vehicular connected applications, such as cooperative automated driving and intersection collision warning, show great potentials to improve the driving safety, where vehicles can share the data collected by a variety of on-board sensors with surrounding vehicles and roadside infrastructures. Transmitting and processing this huge amount of sensory data introduces new challenges for automotive edge computing with traditional wireless communication networks. In this work, we address the problem of traditional asymmetrical network resource allocation for uplink and downlink connections that can significantly degrade the performance of vehicular connected applications. An end-to-end automotive edge networking system, FAIR, is proposed to provide fast, scalable, and impartial connected services for intelligent vehicles with edge computing, which can be applied to any traffic scenes and road topology. The core of FAIR is our proposed symmetrical network resource allocation algorithm deployed at edge servers and service adaptation algorithm equipped on intelligent vehicles. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate our proposed FAIR by leveraging real-world traffic dataset. Simulation results demonstrate that FAIR outperforms existing solutions in a variety of traffic scenes and road topology.Comment: This is a personal copy of the authors. Not for redistribution.     Complex Dynamics of Autonomous Communication Networks and the Intelligent Communication Paradigm

    Dynamics of arbitrary communication system is analysed as unreduced interaction process. The applied generalised, universally nonperturbative method of effective potential reveals the phenomenon of dynamic multivaluedness of competing system configurations forced to permanently replace each other in a causally random order, which leads to universally defined dynamical chaos, complexity, fractality, self-organisation, and adaptability. We demonstrate the origin of huge, exponentially high efficiency of the unreduced, complex network dynamics and specify the universal symmetry of complexity as the fundamental guiding principle for creation and control of such qualitatively new kind of networks and devices.     Recent advances in industrial wireless sensor networks towards efficient management in IoT

    With the accelerated development of Internet-of- Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSN) are gaining importance in the continued advancement of information and communication technologies, and have been connected and integrated with Internet in vast industrial applications. However, given the fact that most wireless sensor devices are resource constrained and operate on batteries, the communication overhead and power consumption are therefore important issues for wireless sensor networks design. In order to efficiently manage these wireless sensor devices in a unified manner, the industrial authorities should be able to provide a network infrastructure supporting various WSN applications and services that facilitate the management of sensor-equipped real-world entities. This paper presents an overview of industrial ecosystem, technical architecture, industrial device management standards and our latest research activity in developing a WSN management system.
