    Middleware-Driven Intelligent Glove for Industrial Applications

    It is estimated that by the year 2020, 700 million wearable technology devices will be sold worldwide. One of the reasons is the industries’ need to increase their productivity. Some of the tools welcomed by industries are handheld devices such as tablets, PDAs and mobile phones. However, handheld devices are not ideal for industrial applications because they often subject users to fatigue during their long working hours. A viable solution to this problem is wearable devices. The advantage of wearable devices is that they become part of the user. Hence, they subject the user to less fatigue, thereby increasing their productivity. This chapter presents the development of an intelligent glove, which is designed to control actuators in an industrial environment. This system utilizes RTI connext data distributed service middleware to facilitate communication over WiFi. Our experiments show very promising results with maximum power consumption of 310 mW and latency as low as 23 ms. These results make the proposed system a perfect fit for most industrial applications

    Abstract: This study develops a new integrated measurement and control system for intermixed biogas and photovoltaic systems to achieve safe and optimal energy usage. Literature and field studies show that existing control methods on small- to medium-scale systems fall short of comprehensive system optimization and fault diagnosis, hence the need to revisit these control methods.The control strategy developed in this study is intelligent as it is wholly based on fuzzy logic algorithms. Fuzzy logic controllers due to their superior nonlinear problem solving capabilities to classical controllers considerably simplify controller design.The mathematical models that define classical controllers are difficult or impossible to realize in biogas and photovoltaic generation process. A microcontroller centered fuzzy logic measurement and control embedded system is designed and developed on the existing hybrid biogas and photovoltaic installations. The designed system is able to accurately predict digester stability, quantify biogas output, and carry out biogas fault detection and control. Optimized battery charging and photovoltaic fault detection and control are also successfully implemented. The system is able to optimize the operation and performance of biogas and photovoltaic energy generation

    Framework for integrated oil pipeline monitoring and incident mitigation systems

    Wireless Sensor Nodes (motes) have witnessed rapid development in the last two decades. Though the design considerations for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been widely discussed in the literature, limited investigation has been done for their application in pipeline surveillance. Given the increasing number of pipeline incidents across the globe, there is an urgent need for innovative and effective solutions for deterring the incessant pipeline incidents and attacks. WSN pose as a suitable candidate for such solutions, since they can be used to measure, detect and provide actionable information on pipeline physical characteristics such as temperature, pressure, video, oil and gas motion and environmental parameters. This paper presents specifications of motes for pipeline surveillance based on integrated systems architecture. The proposed architecture utilizes a Multi-Agent System (MAS) for the realization of an Integrated Oil Pipeline Monitoring and Incident Mitigation System (IOPMIMS) that can effectively monitor and provide actionable information for pipelines. The requirements and components of motes, different threats to pipelines and ways of detecting such threats presented in this paper will enable better deployment of pipeline surveillance systems for incident mitigation. It was identified that the shortcomings of the existing wireless sensor nodes as regards their application to pipeline surveillance are not effective for surveillance systems. The resulting specifications provide a framework for designing a cost-effective system, cognizant of the design considerations for wireless sensor motes used in pipeline surveillance

    Modeling and simulation of offshore workers' behavior

    The offshore oil and gas industry functions in a team work culture in which operations depend not only on individuals’ competency, but also on team skills. Team skills are even more necessary when it comes to handling emergency conditions. Emergency conditions are dynamic in nature and personnel on board are challenged with evolving high-risk situations, time pressure, and uncertainty. One way to effectively handle emergencies is to train personnel to a competency level, both individually and as a part of a team. This would increase the chance of achieving safety in a timely manner using the available resources such as information, equipment, and people. Such training involves enhancing team members' understanding of human performance, in particular, the social and cognitive aspects of effective teamwork and good decision making. Post-accident analysis of offshore accidents shows that conventional training programs are often too generic, and that they are not designed to identify and tackle the human factors that are critical for evolving offshore emergency situations. Recognition of the importance of human factors on operator performance raises the need for training that goes beyond conventional training programs and incorporates non-technical training focusing on leadership, command, decision making, communication, and teamwork. A major difficulty to design such training is that it involves practicing emergency exercises with a potentially large number of participants, each playing the appropriate role in a given scenario. Such large-scale team exercises suffer from both organizational and educational drawbacks. The amount of human and financial resources needed for such a training exercise is difficult to organize. Furthermore, it is very hard, if not impossible, to get all team members together at the same time and location. Also, the team members may have variability in the competency levels (novice versus advanced trainees) and hence different training needs. One effective and flexible solution to this problem is to use intelligent artificial agents, or ‘virtual workers’, in a virtual environment (VE) to play different roles in the team. Virtual workers are artificially intelligent agents that can reproduce behaviors that are similar to or compatible with those of a real worker. This research proposes to develop a human behavior simulation model (HBM) that can be used to create such virtual workers in the context of offshore emergency egress. The goal of this research is to develop a human behavior model that can simulate offshore workers’ emergency response under the influence of performance influencing factors (PIFs). The first part of the work focuses on understanding human behavior during offshore emergency situations. A two level, three factor experiment was conducted in a virtual environment (VE) to investigate the relationships between the PIFs and human behavior. Influence of both internal and external PIFs were investigated. Knowledge acquisition and inference processes of individuals were also investigated in the experimental study. In the second part, a computational model was developed to capture the across-subject variability observed during the experiment. Interviews with subject matter experts (SME) were conducted at this step to ensure that the model is able to produce a realistic range of human behaviors. The final step was to validate the developed behavior model. All high-level tasks to validate the HBM were performed. Special emphasis was given on acceptability criteria testing to ensure that the integrated HBM performs adequately under different operating conditions

    The ORNL I&C Division was created to support DOE-funded research. We have since broadened our mission to include other sponsors as the need for our services has grown. This report summarizes some of the work we have been conducting on behalf of DOE, other federal agencies, and the private sector during the past three and a half years. Because we take on nearly 750 individual projects every year, much of our work cannot be reported in detail. We hope that these summaries are of interest and demonstrate that our work, rooted in DOE scientific and technological programs, can also benefit the nation, its industry, and its citizens in direct and tangible ways

    The proposed model in this paper employs different integrated detectors, such as heat, smoke, and flame. The signals from those detectors go through the system algorithm to check the fire's potentiality and then broadcast the predicted result to various parties using GSM modem associated with the GSM network system. The system uses various sensors to detect fire, smoke, and gas, then transmits the message using GSM module. After the message, send by the module the help arrives in 15 minutes. The system is associated with water pump and a sprinkler. The Water system is associated with a water tank and a sprinkler. The water tank uses a Ultrasonic sensor to monitor the level of water level in the tank for refilling the water tank. Once fire is detected, it automatically sends the emergency message and sprinkles the water

    Arctic Standards: Recommendations on Oil Spill Prevention, Response, and Safety in the U.S. Arctic Ocean

    Oil spilled in Arctic waters would be particularly difficult to remove. Current technology has not been proved to effectively clean up oil when mixed with ice or when trapped under ice. An oil spill would have a profoundly adverse impact on the rich and complex ecosystem found nowhere else in the United States. The Arctic Ocean is home to bowhead, beluga, and gray whales; walruses; polar bears; and other magnificent marine mammals, as well as millions of migratory birds. A healthy ocean is important for these species and integral to the continuation of hunting and fishing traditions practiced by Alaska Native communities for thousands of years.To aid the United States in its efforts to modernize Arctic technology and equipment standards, this report examines the fierce Arctic conditions in which offshore oil and gas operations could take place and then offers a summary of key recommendations for the Interior Department to consider as it develops world-class, Arctic-specific regulatory standards for these activities. Pew's recommendations call for improved technology,equipment, and procedural requirements that match the challenging conditions in the Arctic and for full public participation and transparency throughout the decision-making process. Pew is not opposed to offshore drilling, but a balance must be achieved between responsible energy development and protection of the environment.It is essential that appropriate standards be in place for safety and for oil spill prevention and response in this extreme, remote, and vulnerable ecosystem. This report recommends updating regulations to include Arctic specific requirements and codifying temporary guidance into regulation. The appendixes to this report provide substantially more detail on the report's recommendations, including technical background documentation and additional referenced materials. Please refer to the full set of appendixes for a complete set of recommendations. This report and its appendixes offer guidelines for responsible hydrocarbon development in the U.S. Arctic Ocean
