Integration of Heterogeneous Context Resources in Ubiquitous Environments
International audienceUbiquitous environments provide families of context-aware applications that are capable of exploiting the user mobility as well as the device variability. Typically, these applications retrieve context information from local and remote providers and react accordingly to the detected variations. However, this must be done by considering the heterogeneity of devices and protocols found in ubiquitous environments. Unfortunately, although the context integration represents a keystone of context-aware systems, existing approaches in the literature fail to integrate the diversity of context sources in a standard and flexible way. Therefore, in this paper, we overcome this challenge by introducing resource-oriented bindings into the SCA (Service Component Architecture) model. This new kind of bindings follows the REpresentational State Transfer (REST) principles and leverages the provision of context as RESTful resources. A smart home scenario that highlights challenges in terms of integration in ubiquitous environments motivates the use of our approach

Semantic-based policy engineering for autonomic systems
This paper presents some important directions in the use of ontology-based semantics in achieving the vision of Autonomic Communications. We examine the requirements of Autonomic Communication with a focus on the demanding needs of ubiquitous computing environments, with an emphasis on the requirements shared with Autonomic Computing. We observe that ontologies provide a strong mechanism for addressing the heterogeneity in user task requirements, managed resources, services and context. We then present two complimentary approaches that exploit ontology-based knowledge in support of autonomic communications: service-oriented models for policy engineering and dynamic semantic queries using content-based networks. The paper concludes with a discussion of the major research challenges such approaches raise
On the Design of Ambient Intelligent Systems in the Context of Assistive Technologies
The design of Ambient Intelligent Systems (AISs) is discussed in the
context of assistive technologies. The main issues include ubiquitous communications,
context awareness, natural interactions and heterogeneity, which are
analyzed using some examples. A layered architecture is proposed for heterogeneous
sub-systems integration with three levels of interactions that may be
used as a framework to design assistive AISs.Ministerio de Ciencia y TecnologĂa TIC2001-1868-C0
A Survey on Service Composition Middleware in Pervasive Environments
The development of pervasive computing has put the light on a challenging problem: how to dynamically compose services in heterogeneous and highly changing environments? We propose a survey that defines the service composition as a sequence of four steps: the translation, the generation, the evaluation, and finally the execution. With this powerful and simple model we describe the major service composition middleware. Then, a classification of these service composition middleware according to pervasive requirements - interoperability, discoverability, adaptability, context awareness, QoS management, security, spontaneous management, and autonomous management - is given. The classification highlights what has been done and what remains to do to develop the service composition in pervasive environments
Leveraging the Grid to Provide a Global Platform for Ubiquitous Computing Research
The requirement for distributed systems support for Ubicomp has led to the development of numerous platforms, each addressing a subset of the overall requirements of ubiquitous systems. In contrast, many other scientiĂšĂ
c disciplines have embraced the vision of a global distributed computing platform, i.e. the Grid. We believe that the Grid has the potential to evolve into an ideal platform for building ubiquitous computing applications. In this paper we explore in detail the areas of synergy between Grid computing and ubiquitous computing and highlight a series of research challenges in this space
A Study to Optimize Heterogeneous Resources for Open IoT
Recently, IoT technologies have been progressed, and many sensors and
actuators are connected to networks. Previously, IoT services were developed by
vertical integration style. But now Open IoT concept has attracted attentions
which achieves various IoT services by integrating horizontal separated devices
and services. For Open IoT era, we have proposed the Tacit Computing technology
to discover the devices with necessary data for users on demand and use them
dynamically. We also implemented elemental technologies of Tacit Computing. In
this paper, we propose three layers optimizations to reduce operation cost and
improve performance of Tacit computing service, in order to make as a
continuous service of discovered devices by Tacit Computing. In optimization
process, appropriate function allocation or offloading specific functions are
calculated on device, network and cloud layer before full-scale operation.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, 2017 Fifth International Symposium on Computing

Middleware Technologies for Cloud of Things - a survey
The next wave of communication and applications rely on the new services
provided by Internet of Things which is becoming an important aspect in human
and machines future. The IoT services are a key solution for providing smart
environments in homes, buildings and cities. In the era of a massive number of
connected things and objects with a high grow rate, several challenges have
been raised such as management, aggregation and storage for big produced data.
In order to tackle some of these issues, cloud computing emerged to IoT as
Cloud of Things (CoT) which provides virtually unlimited cloud services to
enhance the large scale IoT platforms. There are several factors to be
considered in design and implementation of a CoT platform. One of the most
important and challenging problems is the heterogeneity of different objects.
This problem can be addressed by deploying suitable "Middleware". Middleware
sits between things and applications that make a reliable platform for
communication among things with different interfaces, operating systems, and
architectures. The main aim of this paper is to study the middleware
technologies for CoT. Toward this end, we first present the main features and
characteristics of middlewares. Next we study different architecture styles and
service domains. Then we presents several middlewares that are suitable for CoT
based platforms and lastly a list of current challenges and issues in design of
CoT based middlewares is discussed.Comment: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352864817301268,
