    Integrating continuous differential evolution with discrete local search for meander line RFID antenna design

    The automated design of meander line RFID antennas is a discrete self-avoiding walk(SAW) problem for which efficiency is to be maximized while resonant frequency is to beminimized. This work presents a novel exploration of how discrete local search may beincorporated into a continuous solver such as differential evolution (DE). A prior DE algorithmfor this problem that incorporates an adaptive solution encoding and a bias favoringantennas with low resonant frequency is extended by the addition of the backbite localsearch operator and a variety of schemes for reintroducing modified designs into the DEpopulation. The algorithm is extremely competitive with an existing ACO approach and thetechnique is transferable to other SAW problems and other continuous solvers. The findingsindicate that careful reintegration of discrete local search results into the continuous populationis necessary for effective performance

    Ant colonies using arc consistency techniques for the set partitioning problem

    In this paper, we solve some benchmarks of Set Covering Problem and Equality Constrained Set Covering or Set Partitioning Problem. The resolution techniques used to solve them were Ant Colony Optimization algorithms and Hybridizations of Ant Colony Optimization with Constraint Programming techniques based on Arc Consistency. The concept of Arc Consistency plays an essential role in constraint satisfaction as a problem simplification operation and as a tree pruning technique during search through the detection of local inconsistencies with the uninstantiated variables. In the proposed hybrid algorithms, we explore the addition of this mechanism in the construction phase of the ants so they can generate only feasible partial solutions. As part of the vehicle system architecture (vetronic), planning is dynamic and has to be activated on-line, which requires response times to be compatible with mission execution. The proposed approach combines constraint solving techniques with an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). The hybridization relies on a static probing technique which builds up a search strategy using a distance information between problem variables and a heuristic solution. Various forms of this approach are compared and evaluated on real world scenarios. Preliminary results exhibit response times close to vehicle control requirements, on realistic problem instances

    Combinatorial optimization problems arise, in many forms, in vari- ous aspects of everyday life. Nowadays, a lot of services are driven by optimization algorithms, enabling us to make the best use of the available resources while guaranteeing a level of service. Ex- amples of such services are public transportation, goods delivery, university time-tabling, and patient scheduling. Thanks also to the open data movement, a lot of usage data about public and private services is accessible today, sometimes in aggregate form, to everyone. Examples of such data are traffic information (Google), bike sharing systems usage (CitiBike NYC), location services, etc. The availability of all this body of data allows us to better understand how people interacts with these services. However, in order for this information to be useful, it is necessary to develop tools to extract knowledge from it and to drive better decisions. In this context, optimization is a powerful tool, which can be used to improve the way the available resources are used, avoid squandering, and improve the sustainability of services. The fields of meta-heuristics, artificial intelligence, and oper- ations research, have been tackling many of these problems for years, without much interaction. However, in the last few years, such communities have started looking at each other’s advance- ments, in order to develop optimization techniques that are faster, more robust, and easier to maintain.     Relational extensions to feature logic: applications to constraint based grammars

    This thesis investigates the logical and computational foundations of unification-based or more appropriately constraint based grammars. The thesis explores extensions to feature logics (which provide the basic knowledge representation services to constraint based grammars) with multi-valued or relational features. These extensions are useful for knowledge representation tasks that cannot be expressed within current feature logics.The approach bridges the gap between concept languages (such as KL-ONE), which are the mainstay of knowledge representation languages in AI, and feature logics. Va¬ rious constraints on relational attributes are considered such as existential membership, universal membership, set descriptions, transitive relations and linear precedence con¬ straints.The specific contributions of this thesis can be summarised as follows: 1. Development of an integrated feature/concept logic 2. Development of a constraint logic for so called partial set descriptions 3. Development of a constraint logic for expressing linear precedence constraints 4. The design of a constraint language CL-ONE that incorporates the central ideas provided by the above study 5.     Integrated optimization of mixed-model assembly sequence planning and line balancing using Multi-objective Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization

    Recently, interest in integrated assembly sequence planning (ASP) and assembly line balancing (ALB) began to pick up because of its numerous benefits, such as the larger search space that leads to better solution quality, reduced error rate in planning, and expedited product time-to-market. However, existing research is limited to the simple assembly problem that only runs one homogenous product. This paper therefore models and optimizes the integrated mixed-model ASP and ALB using Multi-objective Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (MODPSO) concurrently. This is a new variant of the integrated assembly problem. The integrated mixed-model ASP and ALB is modeled using task-based joint precedence graph. In order to test the performance of MODPSO to optimize the integrated mixed-model ASP and ALB, an experiment using a set of 51 test problems with different difficulty levels was conducted. Besides that, MODPSO coefficient tuning was also conducted to identify the best setting so as to optimize the problem. The results from this experiment indicated that the MODPSO algorithm presents a significant improvement in term of solution quality toward Pareto optimal and demonstrates the ability to explore the extreme solutions in the mixed-model assembly optimization search space. The originality of this research is on the new variant of integrated ASP and ALB problem. This paper is the first published research to model and optimize the integrated ASP and ALB research for mixed-model assembly problem
