    Integrated Planning of Industrial Gas Supply Chains

    In this work, we propose a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model for optimal planning of industrial gas supply chain, which integrates supply contracts, production scheduling, truck and rail-car scheduling, as well as inventory management under the Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) paradigm. The objective used here is minimisation of the total operating cost consisting of purchasing of raw material, production, and transportation costs by trucks/rail-cars so as to satisfy customer demands over a given time horizon. The key decisions for production sites include production schedule and purchase schedule of raw material, while the distribution decisions involve customer to plant/depot allocation, quantity transported through rail network, truck delivery amounts, and times. In addition, a relaxation approach is proposed to solve the problem efficiently. An industrial case study is evaluated to illustrate the applicability of the integrated optimisation framework

    A software architecture for autonomous maintenance scheduling: Scenarios for UK and European Rail

    A new era of automation in rail has begun offering developments in the operation and maintenance of industry standard systems. This article documents the development of an architecture and range of scenarios for an autonomous system for rail maintenance planning and scheduling. The Unified Modelling Language (UML) has been utilized to visualize and validate the design of the prototype. A model for information exchange between prototype components and related maintenance planning systems is proposed in this article. Putting forward an architecture and set of usage mode scenarios for the proposed system, this article outlines and validates a viable platform for autonomous planning and scheduling in rail

    Assessing the Efficiency of Mass Transit Systems in the United States

    Frustrated with increased parking problems, unstable gasoline prices, and stifling traffic congestion, a growing number of metropolitan city dwellers consider utilizing the mass transit system. Reflecting this sentiment, a ridership of the mass transit system across the United States has been on the rise for the past several years. A growing demand for the mass transit system, however, necessitates the expansion of service offerings, the improvement of basic infrastructure/routes, and the additional employment of mass transit workers, including drivers and maintenance crews. Such a need requires the optimal allocation of financial and human resources to the mass transit system in times of shrinking budgets and government downsizing. Thus, the public transit authority is faced with the dilemma of “doing more with less.” That is to say, the public transit authority needs to develop a “lean” strategy which can maximize transit services with the minimum expenses. To help the public transit authority develop such a lean strategy, this report identifies the best-in-class practices in the U.S. transit service sector and proposes transit policy guidelines that can best exploit lean principles built upon best-in-class practices

    Multi-objective model for optimizing railway infrastructure asset renewal

    Trabalho inspirado num problema real da empresa Infraestruturas de Portugal, EP.A multi-objective model for managing railway infrastructure asset renewal is presented. The model aims to optimize three objectives, while respecting operational constraints: levelling investment throughout multiple years, minimizing total cost and minimizing work start postponements. Its output is an optimized intervention schedule. The model is based on a case study from a Portuguese infrastructure management company, which specified the objectives and constraints, and reflects management practice on railway infrastructure. The results show that investment levelling greatly influences the other objectives and that total cost fluctuations may range from insignificant to important, depending on the condition of the infrastructure. The results structure is argued to be general and suggests a practical methodology for analysing trade-offs and selecting a solution for implementation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    An intelligent framework and prototype for autonomous maintenance planning in the rail industry

    This paper details the development of the AUTONOM project, a project that aims to provide an enterprise system tailored to the planning needs of the rail industry. AUTONOM extends research in novel sensing, scheduling, and decision-making strategies customised for the automated planning of maintenance activities within the rail industry. This paper sets out a framework and software prototype and details the current progress of the project. In the continuation of the AUTONOM project it is anticipated that the combination of techniques brought together in this work will be capable of addressing a wider range of problem types, offered by Network rail and organisations in different industries

    Heuristic Procedures to Solve Sequencing and Scheduling Problems in Automobile Industry

    With the growing trend for greater product variety, mixed-model assembly nowadays is commonly employed in many industries, which can enable just-in-time production for a production system with high variety. Efficient production scheduling and sequencing is important to achieve the overall material supply, production, and distribution efficiency around the mixed-model assembly line. This research addresses production scheduling and sequencing on a mixed-model assembly line for products with multiple product options, considering multiple objectives with regard to material supply, manufacturing, and product distribution. This research also addresses plant assignment for a product with multiple product options as a prior step to scheduling and sequencing for a mixed-model assembly line. This dissertation is organized into three parts based on three papers. Introduction and literature review Part 1. In an automobile assembly plant many product options often need to be considered in sequencing an assembly line with which multiple objectives often need to be considered. A general heuristic procedure is developed for sequencing automobile assembly lines considering multiple options. The procedure uses the construction, swapping, and re-sequencing steps, and a limited search for sequencing automobile assembly lines considering multiple options. Part 2. In a supply chain, production scheduling and finished goods distribution have been increasingly considered in an integrated manner to achieve an overall best efficiency. This research presents a heuristic procedure to achieve an integrated consideration of production scheduling and product distribution with production smoothing for the automobile just-in-time production assembly line. A meta-heuristic procedure is also developed for improving the heuristic solution. Part 3. For a product that can be manufactured in multiple facilities, assigning orders to the facility is a common problem faced by industry considering production, material constraints, and other supply-chain related constraints. This paper addresses products with multiple product options for plant assignment with regard to multiple constraints at individual plants in order to minimize transportation costs and costs of assignment infeasibility. A series of binary- and mixed-integer programming models are presented, and a decision support tool based on optimization models is presented with a case study. Summary and conclusion

    Hierarchical Approach to Integrated Planning of Industrial Gas Supply Chains

    In this article, an optimization-based framework is proposed for integrated production and distribution planning of industrial gas supply chains. The main goal is to minimize the overall cost, which is composed of raw material, product sourced from external suppliers, production, truck, and rail-car costs, while satisfying customer demands. The overall problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model while a two-phase hierarchical solution strategy is developed to solve the resulting optimization problem efficiently. The first phase relies on truck scheduling decisions being relaxed, whereas the second phase solves the original model at reduced space by fixing product allocation as determined by phase one. Finally, an industrial-size case study is used to illustrate the applicability and efficiency of the proposed optimization framework
