    Review of research in feature-based design

    Research in feature-based design is reviewed. Feature-based design is regarded as a key factor towards CAD/CAPP integration from a process planning point of view. From a design point of view, feature-based design offers possibilities for supporting the design process better than current CAD systems do. The evolution of feature definitions is briefly discussed. Features and their role in the design process and as representatives of design-objects and design-object knowledge are discussed. The main research issues related to feature-based design are outlined. These are: feature representation, features and tolerances, feature validation, multiple viewpoints towards features, features and standardization, and features and languages. An overview of some academic feature-based design systems is provided. Future research issues in feature-based design are outlined. The conclusion is that feature-based design is still in its infancy, and that more research is needed for a better support of the design process and better integration with manufacturing, although major advances have already been made

Following with the implementation of GST in Malaysia on 1st April 2015, it is suspected that the construction capital cost and housing property price will increase accordingly. This study is aim to review the GST effect associated on construction capital cost and it influences towards housing developer and housing property price. Additionally, this study highlights what was the developer point of view on the GST given to them and also the housing price further proposes initiatives to the housing developers. Argument of GST effect is useful for the public administrators so that to re-consider the rate of GST and also beneficial to the construction parties to account with the GST implementation. As conclusion, this study review that GST do give an impact towards the construction capital cost, housing developer and housing property price in terms of knock-on effect

    Effect of PAO-based γ-Fe2O3 and surfactant concentration on viscosity characteristic

    This is a preliminary study on the viscosity characteristics of polyalphaolefin (PAO)- based γ-Fe2O3 under zero magnetic fields. By varying the concentration of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), PAO-based γ-Fe2O3 with different concentrations were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The effect of this factor on the viscosity characteristic of γ-Fe2O3 (< 30 nm) was investigated on the basic of a series of rheological measurement. The use of oleic acid (OA) as a coating agent and surfactant was also investigated by varying its concentration. The results show the concentration of MNPs and the amount of OA has obvious effect on viscosity characteristics of PAO-based γ-Fe2O3. In the case of comparison between the concentrations of MNPs, higher concentration of MNPs increased the viscosity of the PAO-based γ-Fe2O3 and exhibit nearly Newtonian behavior. The large amount of OA also exhibits the increment on viscosity characteristic of MNPs. The experimental data were compared with the Bingham and Casson model and the results revealed that the rheology of the polyalphaolefin (PAO)-based γ-Fe2O3 fitted the Casson model better

    Manufacturing Process Modeling and Simulation

    This paper presents a methodology to be employed in the whole process design phase including first and second processing. This methodology consists of a set of steps which are characterised by an independent model. This paper’s objective is to analyse the coherence between the different models and the coherence between the model and the objectives of each step. The final stage is to develop the production plans. The casting process was the first one to be analyzed. Casting models were created using CAD software (Catia V5R17) and imported into the casting simulation environment (Magmasoft). Filling and solidifying processes have been simulated using different casting models in order to optimize the final configuration. The machining process was modeled using the machining features concept and it was simulated using Catia’s Advanced Machining environment. Two machining strategies have been analyzed according to positioning strategies. Process engineering software was used to create the process plans and to analyze the resource allocation

    Development of a novel 3D simulation modelling system for distributed manufacturing

    This paper describes a novel 3D simulation modelling system for supporting our distributed machine design and control paradigm with respect to simulating and emulating machine behaviour on the Internet. The system has been designed and implemented using Java2D and Java3D. An easy assembly concept of drag-and-drop assembly has been realised and implemented by the introduction of new connection features (unified interface assembly features) between two assembly components (modules). The system comprises a hierarchical geometric modeller, a behavioural editor, and two assemblers. During modelling, designers can combine basic modelling primitives with general extrusions and integrate CAD geometric models into simulation models. Each simulation component (module) model can be visualised and animated in VRML browsers. It is reusable. This makes machine design re-configurable and flexible. A case study example is given to support our conclusions

    Methodology for automatic recovering of 3D partitions from unstitched faces of non-manifold CAD models

    Data exchanges between different software are currently used in industry to speed up the preparation of digital prototypes for Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Unfortunately, due to data loss, the yield of the transfer of manifold models rarely reaches 1. In the case of non-manifold models, the transfer results are even less satisfactory. This is particularly true for partitioned 3D models: during the data transfer based on the well-known exchange formats, all 3D partitions are generally lost. Partitions are mainly used for preparing mesh models required for advanced FEA: mapped meshing, material separation, definition of specific boundary conditions, etc. This paper sets up a methodology to automatically recover 3D partitions from exported non-manifold CAD models in order to increase the yield of the data exchange. Our fully automatic approach is based on three steps. First, starting from a set of potentially disconnected faces, the CAD model is stitched. Then, the shells used to create the 3D partitions are recovered using an iterative propagation strategy which starts from the so-called manifold vertices. Finally, using the identified closed shells, the 3D partitions can be reconstructed. The proposed methodology has been validated on academic as well as industrial examples.This work has been carried out under a research contract between the Research and Development Direction of the EDF Group and the Arts et Métiers ParisTech Aix-en-Provence
