Management and Administration
According to Peter F. Drucker (1909â2005), a revered and prolific writer in the field, âmanagement pertains to every human effort that brings together in one organization people of diverse knowledge and skills.â Managers in both the forprofit and nonprofit arenas share similar responsibilities, he wrote, âamong them defining the right strategies and goals, developing people, measuring performance, and marketing the organizationâs services.â (The Essential Drucker: The Best of Sixty Years of Peter Druckerâs Essential Writings on Management. New York: HarperCollins, 2001, pp. 7â8.) Planning, organizing, leading, directing, and controlling are functions traditionally ascribed to management, but the field comprises numerous subdisciplines, including management science, organization studies, strategic planning, decision-making, leadership studies, human resource management, cross-cultural and international management, quality management, supply chain management, knowledge management, logistics management, crisis management, product innovation management, management communication, management research, manufacturing and service operations management, and project management.
The selection of management journals and magazines discussed in this section include scholarly, peer-reviewed sources as well as publications intended for practitioners and general readers. They offer a mix of theoretical articles, empirical research reports and pragmatic advice, and article summaries and book reviews that can be easily processed by busy professionals. Most of the publications are now available in both print and online formats, and ISSNs for both are included in the annotations when this is the case. Many journals also offer open-access options to authors, who for an additional fee can make their articles available online to both subscribers and non-subscribers of the journal. Early publication online options are also common, under which the version of record of an article is posted online before appearing in a journal issue

A model-driven method for the systematic literature review of qualitative empirical research
This paper explores a model-driven method for systematic literature reviews (SLRs), for use where the empirical studies found in the literature search are based on qualitative research. SLRs are an important component of the evidence-based practice (EBP) paradigm, which is receiving increasing attention in information systems (IS) but has not yet been widely-adopted. We illustrate the model-driven approach to SLRs via an example focused on the use of BPMN (Business Process Modelling Notation) in organizations. We discuss in detail the process followed in using the model-driven SLR method, and show how it is based on a hermeneutic cycle of reading and interpreting, in order to develop and refine a model which synthesizes the research findings of previous qualitative studies. This study can serve as an exemplar for other researchers wishing to carry out model-driven SLRs. We conclude with our reflections on the method and some suggestions for further researc
Eesti MaaĂŒlikoolile avatud andmebaaside kasutamise statistika perioodil 01. jaanuar 2018 â 31. mai 2018
TĂ€istekstKĂ€esolev aruanne on koostatud COUNTER statistikale tuginedes. COUNTER Code of Practice on standard, mille alusel kogutakse statistikat elektrooniliste ressursside kasutamise kohta (Dunkley, s.a). COUNTER on mĂ”eldud raamatukogudele ning andmebaaside, platvormide ja/vĂ”i ajakirjadega seotud olevatele teenusepakkujatele (nĂ€iteks kirjastajad), kes vajavad usaldusvÀÀrset kasutajastatistika ĂŒlevaadet. Kui vaadata teemat raamatukogu vaatevinklist, siis kĂ”ige lihtsamalt öeldes hĂ”lbustab COUNTER raamatukogudel elektroonilise kasutustatistika registreerimist, vahendamist ja tĂ”lgendamist. Kasutusstatistikat saab rahvusvahelisel tasandil koguda ajakirjade, andmebaaside (sh multimeediaandmebaaside), raamatute ja teatmeteoste kohta ning vĂ€ljastatud statistikaaruanded on jĂ€rjepidavad, usaldusvÀÀrsed ja ĂŒksteisega ĂŒhilduvad. Raamatukogud saavad nende andmetele tuginedes oma tegevust paremini planeerida, nĂ€iteks teha kaalutletumaid ostuotsuseid. Samade andmete pĂ”hjal saavad oma tegevust organiseerida ka need, kes raamatukogudele oma teenuseid pakuvad (General Information, s.a; Usage Reports s.a).
Peaaegu kĂ”igis EMĂ andmebaasides oli vĂ”imalik tellida COUNTER statistikat ning tundub, et see on andmebaaside enda sĂŒsteemid tahaplaanile lĂŒkanud. COUNTER on hea vahend, sest vĂ”imaldab saada kĂ”ikide andmebaaside kohta sarnast informatsiooni, mis omakorda aitab kogutud andmeid vĂ”rreldavamasse konteksti paigutada. Statistikaaruannet tellides saab valida konkreetse ajaperioodi, mille kohta andmeid soovitakse saada (General Information, s.a; Usage Reports s.a).
KĂ€esolevas aruandes on esitatud ainult osa kogutud andmetest. Perioodiks on 01.01.2018 â 31.05.2018. Vajadusel on vĂ”imalik lisaandmeid juurde vaadata Exceli failist. NĂ€iteks on tabelites vĂ€lja toodud Top 3 ajakirjad/raamatud, Exceli failis aga Top 10. Vajadusel on vĂ”imalik tutvuda ka tĂ€ielike nimekirjadega. Nende kohta on minu arvutis eraldi kaustad COUNTER algfailidega. Hetkel on aruandest puudu andmebaasi EBSCO ja ajakirja JAAHA andmed, mis on mĂ”lemad riigihankega tellitud. Lisaks puuduvad andmed jĂ€rgmiste andmebaaside/ajakirjade kohta: Wiley, Top Agrar Ausgabe S-R, TTJ

Digital, material and networked: some emerging themes for SET education
Boundaries between the digital and material worlds are becoming blurred as the internet increasingly connects us to things as well as people and information. This is increasingly relevant to education as initiatives which significantly combine digital and material elements in networks are becoming a reality for Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) learning. Our paper reports on the initial findings of a project to carry out a âstate of the artâ review of literature to establish the key themes, opportunities and obstacles that are emerging from the development and use of these âhybridâ systems in learning. We wanted to explore the extent to which this new domain of study is being reported in the literature and to identify work representative of this area. Our aim was to investigate the depth of research in this area by going beyond the technologically descriptive to focus on pedagogical and organisational issues raised in the literature.
To identify the state of current research in the area we carried out a systematic search of databases of Science, Engineering and Technology education literature. We found 808 papers relating to the hybrid learning initiatives we are interested in, of which the majority, 81%, involved the Engineering and Technology disciplines while 6.8% related to Science. The vast majority of papers referred to remote laboratories and most of these were concerned with describing the technologies involved. In order to explore issues emerging from the research, we carried out an in-depth text review of a particular subset of the papers found that focussed on pedagogical issues. The three main themes that emerged were: the importance of real data and authenticity in learning; the importance of a sense of presence (e.g. telepresence, social presence and/or immersion) and the locus of control in, and responsiveness of, a hybrid system. We conclude that these new digital âhybridâ pedagogies offer a lens with which to view both the more traditional material pedagogies, e.g. laboratory-based learning, and purely digital pedagogies, e.g. virtual labs. Finally, issues of authenticity, presence and control/responsiveness will be of increasing pedagogical importance to other âhybridâ systems, such as those involving ubiquitous computing
The Relevance of Benjamin Franklin\u27s and Thomas Jefferson\u27s Technical Writing for Modern Communicators
Today\u27s technical communicators enjoy an increasingly broader role and influence in the workplace, and are often given latitude to use engaging rhetoric and personal touches in many kinds of communications. Historical documents, particularly those that are substantially removed from our own era, can offer fresh approaches and insight into the enduring elements of successful communication. This study explores the technical writings of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson and considers their usefulness to professionals today. Although the political writing of Franklin and Jefferson is more familiar, both men frequently wrote about scientific and technical subjects and were well-known in their day for these documents. Franklin created a captivating persona and arguments which carried emotional and logical appeal. Jefferson was a student of ancient rhetoric and applied classical principles of arrangement to guide readers. His fondness for statistical records led to a skill in presenting numerical data and other types of information in creative, efficient ways. By using tone, language, and description, both Franklin and Jefferson created technical narratives that are equally informative and aesthetically pleasing. The contemporary era of technical communication has been shaped by positivism, the plain language movement, and humanism, among other significant trends. Franklin\u27s and Jefferson\u27s approaches to technical communication both support and challenge the guiding philosophies of these movements. Their styles are reviewed in this study against the context of modern approaches. Opportunities for further historical study are also offered, including additional writings of our Founding Fathers and technical writing from the turn of the twentieth century
