Information Technology induced Business Process Reengineering is being offered as a solution to organizations to achieve competitive advantage in an intensely competitive environment. However, just radical changes in business processes will not help an organization sustain competitive advantage as successful business process reengineering projects can be cloned by competing organizations, thereby negating the competitive advantage developed by any one organization. Instead, if an organization were to design and implement information systems for strategic management of information as a resource, then use of such systems can lead to sustainable competitive advantage. This paper presents the case for the use of an information system designed from the resource based perspective as a source of sustainablecompetitive advantage over business process reengineerin

Institutions are accelerating to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage in supply chain, its range is expanding to find the tools to help them achieve this purpose, and the growing need for these organizations to understand their current status as well as their potential. Therefore, organizations always depend on information systems to process transactions, develop products, access a large proportion of their budgets to support their operational and commercial activities, and how to acquire knowledge for business owners to access these investments. Wealth, naturally, includes an assessment of information technology and a link to business success and access to potential assets within existing innovation mechanisms primarily on the strategic emphasis of organizations in particular. The aim of this research is: to discuss the importance of integrating business strategy and information systems in the framework of achieving sustainable competitive advantage in supply chain and its impact on the sustainability of organizations and their endurance in a world of intense competition and rapid change. Design / Methodology / Approach: reviews and discusses existing literature of interrelationship and framing between business strategy, and customer relationship management systems (CRM) for related issues. Conceptual models are presented to clarify the interrelationship and impact between search streams. Results - the research finds a set of most important results is that if business organizations achieve a sustainable competitive advantage in supply chain, this requires them to match their own business strategy and information systems with the use of their resources and information and their compatibility with competitors' resources and capabilities in the context of competitive environment and how to maintain this feature which helps them achieve institutional distinction compared to their competitors. Practical fallouts: The main implications of practical fallouts revolve around the idea that "in today's intense competition markets, organizations must aim to seek sustainable competitive advantage in order to be competitive, and information systems will play a critical role in generating the necessary data that can through which organizations develop and implement business strategy, which in turn promotes the practice of success and achieve superiority at the business level

While most companies are content to develop and implement computer-based information systems to improve their operational and managerial effectiveness, a few also rely on innovative systems to give them an edge over the competition. An information system that is specifically designed with the aim to create a competitive advantage for its firm is called a strategic information system. To build a strategic information system, one should have a good understanding as to what factors contribute towards competitive advantage. It is here that the analyses by Michael E. Porter on this subject are particularly invaluable. Furthermore, one should also realize what the modern computer excels at fast processing time, fast data retrieval, fast communications, and reliability. There are also risks inherent to strategic information systems. These include the large capital outlay involved, as well as the reality that any competitive advantage thus achieved is not sustainable for long

There is general agreement among academic researchers that information systems can prove strategic if they are well crafted. However, the field currently lacks frameworks that predict which applications might provide lasting benefit and sustainable competitive advantage. Moreover, little has been attempted in analyzing effects on the organization of industry. These effects may, in the long term, prove at least as interesting as effects on individual firms. We present here an initial examination of the effects of information systems and telecommunications on the competitive position of firms. Our intention is to provide guidelines for choosing opportunities that convey sustainable competitive advantage. We present also an initial analysis of predicted changes in the organization of industry. This work draws on field research and on recent work in market economics

Smart Mobile Devices and Competitive Strategy: A Resource-Based Perspective

    Get PDF
This research examines the implications of smart mobile devices (SMDs), or smartphones, for organizational competitiveness. It employs a resource-based framework to analyze the relationship among smart mobile devices, strategy, and firm performance. Building on existing strategic management research which suggests that leveraging IT to build business strategies can be a source of sustainable competitive advantage, six propositions relating smart mobile devices to sustainable competitive advantage are presented. Drawing also from scholarly work in the information technology and information systems domains, strategic implications of mobile- device technology for firms are provided. It is suggested that SMDs impact firm communications, decision-making, innovation, and performance

IT Outsourcing: Examined Under the Resource-Based View Lens

The proponents of the resource-based view (RBV) have long argued that a firm gains sustainable competitive advantage from those resources and capabilities it controls and which are valuable, rare, imperfectly imitable, and not substitutable. So, does information technology (IT) outsourcing strip companies of any competitive advantage that is attributed to IT? It has been said that information systems that cannot sustain competitive advantage are transient and are not expected to enhance firm valuation. In that case, does it imply that outsourcing of certain aspects of IT can lead to sustained competitive advantage? Therefore, this paper’s main research question is: Does IT outsourcing lead to sustained competitive advantage for a firm? In order to empirically examine this, it is proposed to study the impact of IT outsourcing announcements on firm valuation using the event study methodology

Recent Development on Information System Capabilities and Sustainable Competitive Advantages: A Research Model, Review and Directions for Future Research

In today's competitive environment, maintaining a competitive advantage to achieve high performance is a significant challenge for businesses. To succeed, organizations must not only develop competencies in their focus areas but also be able to adapt, change, and realign those competencies in a dynamic and competitive corporate environment. As a result, information system (IS) capabilities are growing in significance as a strategic element that supports the development of competitive advantages and organizational survival. By examining the gap from the prior research, this study intends to answer questions about the link between information system (IS) related capabilities and the sustainable competitive advantages of an organization. The dimensions of information system capabilities (Personnel capability, Administrative capability, Infrastructure capability, and Information management capability) are factors that could explain a firm's sustainable competitive advantage and the theory of dynamic capability is used as the guiding theory, as guidance, and to support the conceptual framework. This will clarify how firms may use their resources and capabilities to boost the effectiveness and utilization of information systems (IS) in daily operations, processes, and people's performance

Knowledge Management Systems That Influence Sustainable Competitive Advantage amongst Humanitarian Agencies in Kenya- Case of Information Technology Systems as an Enabler of Knowledge Management

This study investigated the influence of Knowledge Management (KM) systems on Sustainable Competitive Advantage (SCA) amongst Humanitarian Agencies-HAs through the use of IT systems as an enabler of knowledge management. The objective of study was to examine how information technology systems affect sustainable competitive advantage in humanitarian agencies- HAs- in Kenya. The study population was 42 HAs with 10,487 employees in Kenya. Both the primary and secondary data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and observation checklists. The questionnaires were administered by a drop and collect method to ensure high response rates. Employees were stratified into management and junior staff. Purposive sampling was then used to sample management staff in the agencies surveyed and simple random sampling techniques were used to sample employees at the junior level. Statistical tools such as cross-tabulation and frequency tables were used to analyze the data. This study adopted a descriptive research design. The study used resource-based theory of knowledge management for competitive advantage as its theoretical basis. The resource-based view and theory of the firm defines a strategic asset as one that is rare, valuable, imperfectly imitable and non-substitutable. Knowledge is seen as one such strategic asset with the potential to be a source of competitive advantage for an organization. By adopting a resource-based theory of the firm with an extension of a knowledge-based perspective, this study aimed at developing and validating a conceptual model of the relationships between knowledge management enabler- it Systems and their influence on competitive advantage amongst humanitarian agencies in Kenya. From the study, there is substantial evidence to show that knowledge management has a strong positive influence on sustainable competitive advantage. The results from the 42 agencies surveyed reconfirmed a general agreement found in the literature that technological systems are ideal to bring significant positive correlations in improving organizational competitive advantage. Finally, recommendations were offered from practical ideas, drawn from experience, and intended for practitioners working with HAs but are also based on the theory behind the knowledge management concept and are just as relevant for consideration by knowledge management and development theorists alike. Key Words: Knowledge Management, Competitive Advantage, Humanitarian agencies, Civic, IT, Strategy, Organization, Enabler

Gaining sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) is a desire for almost every organization; however, acquiring such advantage is not an easy task. Many organizations implement information technology (IT) systems to be competitive in the market, and many researchers have examined the link between IT and SCA. Organizations need to focus not only on IT resources but also on how to manage these resources to be competitive in the marketplace. In this paper, a new model is proposed based on resource-based view and strategic alignment model. By linking strategic IT resources to alignment mechanisms, this model shows the ability of IT as a facilitator in gaining competitive advantage
