    Shot boundary detection in videos using Graph Cut Sets

    The Shot Boundary Detection (SBD) is an early step for most of the video applications involving understanding, indexing, characterization, or categorization of video. The SBD is temporal video segmentation and it has been an active topic of research in the area of content based video analysis. The research efforts have resulted in a variety of algorithms. The major methods that have been used for shot boundary detection include pixel intensity based, histogram-based, edge-based, and motion vectors based, technique. Recently researchers have attempted use of graph theory based methods for shot boundary detection. The proposed algorithm is one such graph based model and employs graph partition mechanism for detection of shot boundaries. Graph partition model is one of the graph theoretic segmentation algorithms, which offers data clustering by using a graph model. Pair-wise similarities between all data objects are used to construct a weighted graph represented as an adjacency matrix (weighted similarity matrix) that contains all necessary information for clustering. Representing the data set in the form of an edge-weighted graph converts the data clustering problem into a graph partitioning problem.     Shot boundary detection in MPEG videos using local and global indicators

    Shot boundary detection (SBD) plays important roles in many video applications. In this letter, we describe a novel method on SBD operating directly in the compressed domain. First, several local indicators are extracted from MPEG macroblocks, and AdaBoost is employed for feature selection and fusion. The selected features are then used in classifying candidate cuts into five sub-spaces via pre-filtering and rule-based decision making. Following that, global indicators of frame similarity between boundary frames of cut candidates are examined using phase correlation of dc images. Gradual transitions like fade, dissolve, and combined shot cuts are also identified.     Information Recovery from Pairwise Measurements

    A variety of information processing tasks in practice involve recovering nn objects from single-shot graph-based measurements, particularly those taken over the edges of some measurement graph G\mathcal{G}. This paper concerns the situation where each object takes value over a group of MM different values, and where one is interested to recover all these values based on observations of certain pairwise relations over G\mathcal{G}. The imperfection of measurements presents two major challenges for information recovery: 1) inaccuracy\textit{inaccuracy}: a (dominant) portion 1−p1-p of measurements are corrupted; 2) incompleteness\textit{incompleteness}: a significant fraction of pairs are unobservable, i.e. G\mathcal{G} can be highly sparse. Under a natural random outlier model, we characterize the minimax recovery rate\textit{minimax recovery rate}, that is, the critical threshold of non-corruption rate pp below which exact information recovery is infeasible. This accommodates a very general class of pairwise relations. For various homogeneous random graph models (e.g. Erdos Renyi random graphs, random geometric graphs, small world graphs), the minimax recovery rate depends almost exclusively on the edge sparsity of the measurement graph G\mathcal{G} irrespective of other graphical metrics. This fundamental limit decays with the group size MM at a square root rate before entering a connectivity-limited regime. Under the Erdos Renyi random graph, a tractable combinatorial algorithm is proposed to approach the limit for large MM (M=nΩ(1)M=n^{\Omega(1)}), while order-optimal recovery is enabled by semidefinite programs in the small MM regime.     Cross-layer distributed power control: A repeated games formulation to improve the sum energy-efficiency

    The main objective of this work is to improve the energy-efficiency (EE) of a multiple access channel (MAC) system, through power control, in a distributed manner. In contrast with many existing works on energy-efficient power control, which ignore the possible presence of a queue at the transmitter, we consider a new generalized cross-layer EE metric. This approach is relevant when the transmitters have a non-zero energy cost even when the radiated power is zero and takes into account the presence of a finite packet buffer and packet arrival at the transmitter. As the Nash equilibrium (NE) is an energy-inefficient solution, the present work aims at overcoming this deficit by improving the global energy-efficiency. Indeed, as the considered system has multiple agencies each with their own interest, the performance metric reflecting the individual interest of each decision maker is the global energy-efficiency defined then as the sum over individual energy-efficiencies. Repeated games (RG) are investigated through the study of two dynamic games (finite RG and discounted RG), whose equilibrium is defined when introducing a new operating point (OP), Pareto-dominating the NE and relying only on individual channel state information (CSI). Accordingly, closed-form expressions of the minimum number of stages of the game for finite RG (FRG) and the maximum discount factor of the discounted RG (DRG) were established. The cross-layer model in the RG formulation leads to achieving a shorter minimum number of stages in the FRG even for higher number of users. In addition, the social welfare (sum of utilities) in the DRG decreases slightly with the cross-layer model when the number of users increases while it is reduced considerably with the Goodman model. Finally, we show that in real systems with random packet arrivals, the cross-layer power control algorithm outperforms the Goodman algorithm.Comment: 36 pages, single column draft forma
