    Industrial inspection using Gaussian functions in a colour space

    This paper presents an original method of modelling the colour distributions of images using 2D Gaussian functions and its application to flaw detection in industrial inspection. 2D Gaussian functions are used to model the colours that appear in the non-flawed images in an unsupervised manner. Pixels under test are compared to the colour distribution from training images. 140 images have been tested and the results are given. This method has a wide range of applications for detecting colour separable objects in images. It also has great potential in industrial inspection due to its speed, accuracy and unsupervised training

    A preliminary approach to intelligent x-ray imaging for baggage inspection at airports

    Identifying explosives in baggage at airports relies on being able to characterize the materials that make up an X-ray image. If a suspicion is generated during the imaging process (step 1), the image data could be enhanced by adapting the scanning parameters (step 2). This paper addresses the first part of this problem and uses textural signatures to recognize and characterize materials and hence enabling system control. Directional Gabor-type filtering was applied to a series of different X-ray images. Images were processed in such a way as to simulate a line scanning geometry. Based on our experiments with images of industrial standards and our own samples it was found that different materials could be characterized in terms of the frequency range and orientation of the filters. It was also found that the signal strength generated by the filters could be used as an indicator of visibility and optimum imaging conditions predicted

    Fuzzy spectral and spatial feature integration for classification of nonferrous materials in hyperspectral data

    Hyperspectral data allows the construction of more elaborate models to sample the properties of the nonferrous materials than the standard RGB color representation. In this paper, the nonferrous waste materials are studied as they cannot be sorted by classical procedures due to their color, weight and shape similarities. The experimental results presented in this paper reveal that factors such as the various levels of oxidization of the waste materials and the slight differences in their chemical composition preclude the use of the spectral features in a simplistic manner for robust material classification. To address these problems, the proposed FUSSER (fuzzy spectral and spatial classifier) algorithm detailed in this paper merges the spectral and spatial features to obtain a combined feature vector that is able to better sample the properties of the nonferrous materials than the single pixel spectral features when applied to the construction of multivariate Gaussian distributions. This approach allows the implementation of statistical region merging techniques in order to increase the performance of the classification process. To achieve an efficient implementation, the dimensionality of the hyperspectral data is reduced by constructing bio-inspired spectral fuzzy sets that minimize the amount of redundant information contained in adjacent hyperspectral bands. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm increased the overall classification rate from 44% using RGB data up to 98% when the spectral-spatial features are used for nonferrous material classification

    TVL<sub>1</sub> Planarity Regularization for 3D Shape Approximation

    The modern emergence of automation in many industries has given impetus to extensive research into mobile robotics. Novel perception technologies now enable cars to drive autonomously, tractors to till a field automatically and underwater robots to construct pipelines. An essential requirement to facilitate both perception and autonomous navigation is the analysis of the 3D environment using sensors like laser scanners or stereo cameras. 3D sensors generate a very large number of 3D data points when sampling object shapes within an environment, but crucially do not provide any intrinsic information about the environment which the robots operate within. This work focuses on the fundamental task of 3D shape reconstruction and modelling from 3D point clouds. The novelty lies in the representation of surfaces by algebraic functions having limited support, which enables the extraction of smooth consistent implicit shapes from noisy samples with a heterogeneous density. The minimization of total variation of second differential degree makes it possible to enforce planar surfaces which often occur in man-made environments. Applying the new technique means that less accurate, low-cost 3D sensors can be employed without sacrificing the 3D shape reconstruction accuracy

    Towards Colour Imaging with the Image Ranger

    Many of the colour images captured by different types of digital camera do not provide quality colour image according to human visual perception. In this study we explore technique for colour correction of the colour images from the Waikato Image Ranger. Colour images were captured using three different illuminants with the Waikato Image Ranger. The colour image formed from the ranger data do not have good quality because illuminants used do not match usual RGB standard illuminants. The spectral power distribution values of the illuminants were measured using spectroradiometer. To calculate tristimulus values the reflectance function of the scene is required. A mechanism of calculating the reflectance functions from the ranger data using genetic algorithm was explained. The reflectance functions are approximated using variable Gaussian basis functions, and fit to the ranger colour triplets by genetic algorithms. From the estimated reflectance functions standard CRT RGB values were calculated. It was found that the genetic algorithm approach was for too slow for practical purposes and produced images with far too much colour variation

    Robust optimisation of computationally expensive models using adaptive multi-fidelity emulation

    Computationally expensive models are increasingly employed in the design process of engineering products and systems. Robust design in particular aims to obtain designs that exhibit near-optimal performance and low variability under uncertainty. Surrogate models are often employed to imitate the behaviour of expensive computational models. Surrogates are trained from a reduced number of samples of the expensive model. A crucial component of the performance of a surrogate is the quality of the training set. Problems occur when sampling fails to obtain points located in an area of interest and/or where the computational budget only allows for a very limited number of runs of the expensive model. This paper employs a Gaussian process emulation approach to perform efficient single-loop robust optimisation of expensive models. The emulator is enhanced to propagate input uncertainty to the emulator output, allowing single-loop robust optimisation. Further, the emulator is trained with multi-fidelity data obtained via adaptive sampling to maximise the quality of the training set for the given computational budget. An illustrative example is presented to highlight how the method works, before it is applied to two industrial case studies

    Modeling of evolving textures using granulometries

    This chapter describes a statistical approach to classification of dynamic texture images, called parallel evolution functions (PEFs). Traditional classification methods predict texture class membership using comparisons with a finite set of predefined texture classes and identify the closest class. However, where texture images arise from a dynamic texture evolving over time, estimation of a time state in a continuous evolutionary process is required instead. The PEF approach does this using regression modeling techniques to predict time state. It is a flexible approach which may be based on any suitable image features. Many textures are well suited to a morphological analysis and the PEF approach uses image texture features derived from a granulometric analysis of the image. The method is illustrated using both simulated images of Boolean processes and real images of corrosion. The PEF approach has particular advantages for training sets containing limited numbers of observations, which is the case in many real world industrial inspection scenarios and for which other methods can fail or perform badly.
