    Systems Development of a Two-Axis Stabilised Platform to Facilitate Astronomical Observations

    Inertially Stabilised Platforms (ISPs) aim to control the line-of-sight between a sensor and a target. They perform two distinct operations; keeping track of the target as the sensor host and the target move in inertial space and attenuating rotational disturbances incurred to the sensor by host vehicle motion. This project aimed to develop a two-axis ISP for use in astronomical applications. It represents the initial development of all systems of a low-cost ISP designed for a 3.5” compound telescope. To achieve this, relevant literature describing the various components of an ISP were reviewed to inform the design, implementation and testing cycle which comprised most of the project. A set of system specifications was developed to guide design decisions. The performance of the implemented system was compared against these specifications once the project was complete. During the project, the electro-mechanical structure of the ISP was designed and implemented, including a mechanical assembly designed to mount a camera and inertially and geometrically model the specified telescope. This allowed the ISP to be tested at a lower cost than with the telescope itself. The associated electrical systems were specified and configured. An image processing script capable of detecting and locating the centre of the Moon in the camera field of view was written in Python and implemented on a Raspberry Pi Computer. A complete simulation model for the system was written in the simulation language, Simul_C_EM, and used to design various controllers for the ISP control system and help verify certain estimated system parameters such as gimbal friction. For each gimbal, PI controllers were designed to allow manual orientation control of the telescope, compensated P controllers were designed to achieve target tracking, and compensated PI controllers were designed to reject rotational disturbances. These were implemented in C on an STM32F0 microcontroller tasked with managing the various control and communications tasks required by the system. Finally, a user interface was written in LabVIEW to facilitate intuitive user control of the system and perform datalogging of the system runtime data. Testing of the system showed good correlation between the hardware and the simulated results indicating an accurate simulation model that can be used to test future design developments

    Space Mechanisms Lessons Learned Study. Volume 2: Literature Review

    Hundreds of satellites have been launched to date. Some have operated extremely well and others have not. In order to learn from past operating experiences, a study was conducted to determine the conditions under which space mechanisms (mechanically moving components) have previously worked or failed. The study consisted of an extensive literature review that included both government contractor reports and technical journals, communication and visits (when necessary) to the various NASA and DOD centers and their designated contractors (this included contact with project managers of current and prior NASA satellite programs as well as their industry counterparts), requests for unpublished information to NASA and industry, and a mail survey designed to acquire specific mechanism experience. The information obtained has been organized into two volumes. Volume 1 provides a summary of the lesson learned, the results of a needs analysis, responses to the mail survey, a listing of experts, a description of some available facilities, and a compilation of references.     Sensors, measurement fusion and missile trajectory optimisation

    When considering advances in “smart” weapons it is clear that air-launched systems have adopted an integrated approach to meet rigorous requirements, whereas air-defence systems have not. The demands on sensors, state observation, missile guidance, and simulation for air-defence is the subject of this research. Historical reviews for each topic, justification of favoured techniques and algorithms are provided, using a nomenclature developed to unify these disciplines. Sensors selected for their enduring impact on future systems are described and simulation models provided. Complex internal systems are reduced to simpler models capable of replicating dominant features, particularly those that adversely effect state observers. Of the state observer architectures considered, a distributed system comprising ground based target and own-missile tracking, data up-link, and on-board missile measurement and track fusion is the natural choice for air-defence. An IMM is used to process radar measurements, combining the estimates from filters with different target dynamics. The remote missile state observer combines up-linked target tracks and missile plots with IMU and seeker data to provide optimal guidance information. The performance of traditional PN and CLOS missile guidance is the basis against which on-line trajectory optimisation is judged. Enhanced guidance laws are presented that demand more from the state observers, stressing the importance of time-to-go and transport delays in strap-down systems employing staring array technology. Algorithms for solving the guidance twopoint boundary value problems created from the missile state observer output using gradient projection in function space are presented. A simulation integrating these aspects was developed whose infrastructure, capable of supporting any dynamical model, is described in the air-defence context. MBDA have extended this work creating the Aircraft and Missile Integration Simulation (AMIS) for integrating different launchers and missiles.     Recent Advances in Theoretical and Computational Modeling of Composite Materials and Structures

    The advancement in manufacturing technology and scientific research has improved the development of enhanced composite materials with tailored properties depending on their design requirements in many engineering fields, as well as in thermal and energy management. Some representative examples of advanced materials in many smart applications and complex structures rely on laminated composites, functionally graded materials (FGMs), and carbon-based constituents, primarily carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene sheets or nanoplatelets, because of their remarkable mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and high permeability. For such materials, experimental tests usually require a large economical effort because of the complex nature of each constituent, together with many environmental, geometrical and or mechanical uncertainties of non-conventional specimens. At the same time, the theoretical and/or computational approaches represent a valid alternative for designing complex manufacts with more flexibility. In such a context, the development of advanced theoretical and computational models for composite materials and structures is a subject of active research, as explored here for a large variety of structural members, involving the static, dynamic, buckling, and damage/fracturing problems at different scales

    Indirect Measurement of Rotor Dynamic Imbalance for Control Moment Gyroscopes via Gimbal Disturbance Observer

    The high-precision speed control of gimbal servo systems is the key to generating high-precision torque for control moment gyroscopes (CMGs) in spacecrafts. However, the control performance of gimbal servo systems may be degraded significantly by disturbances, especially a dynamic imbalance disturbance with the same frequency as the high-speed rotor. For assembled CMGs, it is very difficult to measure the rotor imbalance directly by using a dynamic balancing machine. In this paper, a gimbal disturbance observer is proposed to estimate the dynamic imbalance of the rotor assembled in the CMG. First, a third-order dynamical system is established to describe the disturbance dynamics of the gimbal servo system, in which the rotor dynamic imbalance torque along the gimbal axis and the other disturbances are modeled to be periodic and bounded, respectively. Then, the gimbal disturbance observer is designed for the third-order dynamical system by using the total disturbance as a virtual measurement. Since the virtual measurement is derived from the inverse dynamics of the gimbal servo system, the information of the rotor dynamic imbalance can be obtained indirectly only using the measurements of gimbal speed and three-phase currents. Semi-physical experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the observer by using a CMG simulator
