Geographic Gossip: Efficient Averaging for Sensor Networks
Gossip algorithms for distributed computation are attractive due to their
simplicity, distributed nature, and robustness in noisy and uncertain
environments. However, using standard gossip algorithms can lead to a
significant waste in energy by repeatedly recirculating redundant information.
For realistic sensor network model topologies like grids and random geometric
graphs, the inefficiency of gossip schemes is related to the slow mixing times
of random walks on the communication graph. We propose and analyze an
alternative gossiping scheme that exploits geographic information. By utilizing
geographic routing combined with a simple resampling method, we demonstrate
substantial gains over previously proposed gossip protocols. For regular graphs
such as the ring or grid, our algorithm improves standard gossip by factors of
and respectively. For the more challenging case of random
geometric graphs, our algorithm computes the true average to accuracy
using radio
transmissions, which yields a factor improvement over
standard gossip algorithms. We illustrate these theoretical results with
experimental comparisons between our algorithm and standard methods as applied
to various classes of random fields.Comment: To appear, IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
Joint Routing and STDMA-based Scheduling to Minimize Delays in Grid Wireless Sensor Networks
In this report, we study the issue of delay optimization and energy
efficiency in grid wireless sensor networks (WSNs). We focus on STDMA (Spatial
Reuse TDMA)) scheduling, where a predefined cycle is repeated, and where each
node has fixed transmission opportunities during specific slots (defined by
colors). We assume a STDMA algorithm that takes advantage of the regularity of
grid topology to also provide a spatially periodic coloring ("tiling" of the
same color pattern). In this setting, the key challenges are: 1) minimizing the
average routing delay by ordering the slots in the cycle 2) being energy
efficient. Our work follows two directions: first, the baseline performance is
evaluated when nothing specific is done and the colors are randomly ordered in
the STDMA cycle. Then, we propose a solution, ORCHID that deliberately
constructs an efficient STDMA schedule. It proceeds in two steps. In the first
step, ORCHID starts form a colored grid and builds a hierarchical routing based
on these colors. In the second step, ORCHID builds a color ordering, by
considering jointly both routing and scheduling so as to ensure that any node
will reach a sink in a single STDMA cycle. We study the performance of these
solutions by means of simulations and modeling. Results show the excellent
performance of ORCHID in terms of delays and energy compared to a shortest path
routing that uses the delay as a heuristic. We also present the adaptation of
ORCHID to general networks under the SINR interference model
Software Defined Networks based Smart Grid Communication: A Comprehensive Survey
The current power grid is no longer a feasible solution due to
ever-increasing user demand of electricity, old infrastructure, and reliability
issues and thus require transformation to a better grid a.k.a., smart grid
(SG). The key features that distinguish SG from the conventional electrical
power grid are its capability to perform two-way communication, demand side
management, and real time pricing. Despite all these advantages that SG will
bring, there are certain issues which are specific to SG communication system.
For instance, network management of current SG systems is complex, time
consuming, and done manually. Moreover, SG communication (SGC) system is built
on different vendor specific devices and protocols. Therefore, the current SG
systems are not protocol independent, thus leading to interoperability issue.
Software defined network (SDN) has been proposed to monitor and manage the
communication networks globally. This article serves as a comprehensive survey
on SDN-based SGC. In this article, we first discuss taxonomy of advantages of
SDNbased SGC.We then discuss SDN-based SGC architectures, along with case
studies. Our article provides an in-depth discussion on routing schemes for
SDN-based SGC. We also provide detailed survey of security and privacy schemes
applied to SDN-based SGC. We furthermore present challenges, open issues, and
future research directions related to SDN-based SGC.Comment: Accepte
Network correlated data gathering with explicit communication: NP-completeness and algorithms
We consider the problem of correlated data gathering by a network with a sink node and a tree-based communication structure, where the goal is to minimize the total transmission cost of transporting the information collected by the nodes, to the sink node. For source coding of correlated data, we consider a joint entropy-based coding model with explicit communication where coding is simple and the transmission structure optimization is difficult. We first formulate the optimization problem definition in the general case and then we study further a network setting where the entropy conditioning at nodes does not depend on the amount of side information, but only on its availability. We prove that even in this simple case, the optimization problem is NP-hard. We propose some efficient, scalable, and distributed heuristic approximation algorithms for solving this problem and show by numerical simulations that the total transmission cost can be significantly improved over direct transmission or the shortest path tree. We also present an approximation algorithm that provides a tree transmission structure with total cost within a constant factor from the optimal
GRIDKIT: Pluggable overlay networks for Grid computing
A `second generation' approach to the provision of Grid middleware is now emerging which is built on service-oriented architecture and web services standards and technologies. However, advanced Grid applications have significant demands that are not addressed by present-day web services platforms. As one prime example, current platforms do not support the rich diversity of communication `interaction types' that are demanded by advanced applications (e.g. publish-subscribe, media streaming, peer-to-peer interaction). In the paper we describe the Gridkit middleware which augments the basic service-oriented architecture to address this particular deficiency. We particularly focus on the communications infrastructure support required to support multiple interaction types in a unified, principled and extensible manner-which we present in terms of the novel concept of pluggable overlay networks
