    Applications of artificial intelligence in powerline communications in terms of noise detection and reduction : a review

    Abstract: The technology which utilizes the power line as a medium for transferring information known as powerline communication (PLC) has been in existence for over a hundred years. It is beneficial because it avoids new installation since it uses the present installation for electrical power to transmit data. However, transmission of data signals through a power line channel usually experience some challenges which include impulsive noise, frequency selectivity, high channel attenuation, low line impedance etc. The impulsive noise exhibits a power spectral density within the range of 10-15 dB higher than the background noise, which could cause a severe problem in a communication system. For better outcome of the PLC system, these noises must be detected and suppressed. This paper reviews various techniques used in detecting and mitigating the impulsive noise in PLC and suggests the application of machine learning algorithms for the detection and removal of impulsive noise in power line communication systems

    Joint smoothed l0-norm DOA estimation algorithm for multiple measurement vectors in MIMO radar

    © 2017 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is usually confronted with a multiple measurement vector (MMV) case. In this paper, a novel fast sparse DOA estimation algorithm, named the joint smoothed l0-norm algorithm, is proposed for multiple measurement vectors in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. To eliminate the white or colored Gaussian noises, the new method first obtains a low-complexity high-order cumulants based data matrix. Then, the proposed algorithm designs a joint smoothed function tailored for the MMV case, based on which joint smoothed l0-norm sparse representation framework is constructed. Finally, for the MMV-based joint smoothed function, the corresponding gradient-based sparse signal reconstruction is designed, thus the DOA estimation can be achieved. The proposed method is a fast sparse representation algorithm, which can solve the MMV problem and perform well for both white and colored Gaussian noises. The proposed joint algorithm is about two orders of magnitude faster than the l1-norm minimization based methods, such as l1-SVD (singular value decomposition), RV (real-valued) l1-SVD and RV l1-SRACV (sparse representation array covariance vectors), and achieves better DOA estimation performance

    Impulsive noise detection in PLC with smoothed L0-norm

Power-line communications (PLC) commonly employs orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) as the modulation technique, and impulsive noise has a significant negative impact on its performance. Using the property of null subcarriers in OFDM and the fact that impulsive noise is sparse, we formulate a minimization problem to detect and estimate the impulsive noise. In previous works, l1-norm minimization was employed to achieve this task. In this paper, we propose to use a smoothed l0-norm minimization algorithm for impulsive noise detection instead. Simulation results show that this approach is promising as it achieves comparable performance as l1-norm minimization but with much lower complexity
