Fastening the Initial Access in 5G NR Sidelink for 6G V2X Networks
The ever-increasing demand for intelligent, automated, and connected mobility
solutions pushes for the development of an innovative sixth Generation (6G) of
cellular networks. A radical transformation on the physical layer of vehicular
communications is planned, with a paradigm shift towards beam-based millimeter
Waves or sub-Terahertz communications, which require precise beam pointing for
guaranteeing the communication link, especially in high mobility. A key design
aspect is a fast and proactive Initial Access (IA) algorithm to select the
optimal beam to be used. In this work, we investigate alternative IA techniques
to fasten the current fifth-generation (5G) standard, targeting an efficient 6G
design. First, we discuss cooperative position-based schemes that rely on the
position information. Then, motivated by the intuition of a non-uniform
distribution of the communication directions due to road topology constraints,
we design two Probabilistic Codebook (PCB) techniques of prioritized beams. In
the first one, the PCBs are built leveraging past collected traffic
information, while in the second one, we use the Hough Transform over the
digital map to extract dominant road directions. We also show that the
information coming from the angular probability distribution allows designing
non-uniform codebook quantization, reducing the degradation of the performances
compared to uniform one. Numerical simulation on realistic scenarios shows that
PCBs-based beam selection outperforms the 5G standard in terms of the number of
IA trials, with a performance comparable to position-based methods, without
requiring the signaling of sensitive information
On the Impact of Antenna Topologies for Massive MIMO Systems
Approximate expressions for the spatial correlation of cylindrical and
uniform rectangular arrays (URA) are derived using measured distributions of
angles of departure (AOD) for both the azimuth and zenith domains. We examine
massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) convergence properties of the
correlated channels by considering a number of convergence metrics. The
per-user matched filter (MF) signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR)
performance and convergence rate, to respective limiting values, of the two
antenna topologies is also explored.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Beamforming management and beam training in 5G system
Massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system with beamforming technique is an integral part of upcoming 5G new radio (NR) system. For the upcoming deployment of 5G NR system in both stand-alone (SA) and non-stand-alone (NSA) structure, beamforming plays an important role to achieve its key features and meet the estimated requirement. To be employed with massive MIMO antenna structure, beamforming will allow 5G system to serve several users at a time with better throughput and spectral usage. Beamforming will also minimize the path loss due to high susceptibility of millimetre wave and provide beamforming gain. For a wide range of benefit scheme, beamforming is currently a hot topic regarding the deployment of 5G. With the advantage of both analog and digital beamforming, hybrid beamforming structure can provide better system benchmark performance in terms of cost and flexibility. Switched beam training and adaptive beam training approaches and algorithms are developed in order to reduce training time, signalling overhead and misdetection probability. Some of the approaches and algorithm are addressed in this thesis. Beamforming management ensures the initiation and sustainability of the established link between transmitter and receiver through different processes. Beam tracking helps to keep track of the receiver devices during mobility. As beamforming is related to antenna configuration, near-field spherical wave front incident problem was ignored, and all the references and examples presented in this topic was obtained with a far-field propagation perspective. To avoid mutual coupling between antenna elements and grating lobe problems in antenna radiation pattern, each element is separated by half of the wavelength. This thesis paper aims to provide a broader view into beamforming scenario, starting from the basics of beamforming to training the beams and management aspects in the hardware part of 5G structure. Another goal is to present the necessity of beamforming in a 5G system by stating different benefits scheme such as spatial diversity, interference suppression, energy efficiency, spectral efficiency and so on. These benefits are justified by evaluating various research paper and MATLAB simulations
Mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e TelecomunicaçõesThe millimeter wave communications and the use of a massive number of antennas are two promising technologies that being combined allow to achieve the multi Gb/s required by future 5G wireless systems. As this type of systems has a high number of antennas it is impossible to use a fully digital architecture, due to hardware limitations. Therefore, the design of signal processing techniques for hybrid analog-digital architectures is a requirement.
Depending on the structure of the analog part the hybrid analog-digital architectures may be fully connected or sub-connected. Although the fully connected hybrid architectures allow to connect all RF chains to any antenna element, they involve a high cost due to its structural and computational complexity. As such, the sub-connected hybrid architectures become more attractive, since either at the hardware level or from the computational point of view they are less demanding.
In this dissertation, we propose a hybrid iterative block multiuser equalizer for sub-connected millimeter wave massive MIMO systems. The user terminal transceiver has low-complexity and as such employ a pure analog random precoder, with a single RF chain. For the base station, a sub-connected hybrid analog-digital equalizer is designed to remove the multiuser interference.
The hybrid equalizer is optimized using the average bit-error-rate as a metric. Due to the coupling between the RF chains in the optimization problem the computation of the optimal solution is way too complex. To address this problem, we compute the analog part of the equalizer sequentially over the RF chains using a dictionary built from the array response vectors. The proposed sub-connected hybrid iterative multiuser equalizer is compared with a recently proposed fully connected hybrid analog-digital approach and with the fully digital architecture. The results show that the performance of the proposed scheme is close to the fully connected hybrid approach after just a few iterations.

Analysis of millimeter wave ad hoc networks
Over the coming few years, the next-generation of wireless networks will be standardized and defined. Ad hoc networks, which operate without expensive infrastructure, are desirable for use cases such as military networks or disaster relief. Millimeter wave (mmWave) technology may enable high speed ad hoc networks. Directional antennas and building blockage limit the received interference power while the huge bandwidth enables high data rates. For this reason, understanding the interference and network performance of mmWave ad hoc networks is crucial for next-generation network design.
In my first contribution, I derive the SINR complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) for a random single-hop mmWave ad hoc network. These base results are used to further give insights in mmWave ad hoc networks. The SINR distribution is used to compute the transmission capacity of a mmWave ad hoc network using a Taylor bound. The CDF of the interference to noise ratio (INR) is also derived which shows that mmWave ad hoc networks are line-of-sight interference limited. I extend my work in the second contribution to include general clustered Poisson point processes to derive insights in the effect of different spatial interference patterns. Using the developed framework, I derive the ergodic rate of both spatially uniform and cluster mmWave ad hoc networks. I develop scaling trends for the antenna array size to keep the ergodic rate constant. The impact of beam alignment is computed in the final part of the contribution. Finally, I account for the overhead of beam alignment in mmWave ad hoc networks. The final contribution leverages the first two contributions to derive the expected training time a mmWave ad hoc network must perform before data transmission occurs. The results show that the optimal conditions for minimizing the training time are different than the optimal conditions for maximizing rate.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Keilaavan millimetriaaltoradiolinkin suuntaaminen ja seuraaminen
In order to provide high-throughput mobile broadband in a dense urban information society, upcoming cellular networks will finally employ the under-utilized millimeter-wave (mmW) frequencies. The challenging mmW radio environment, however, necessitates massive cell densification with wireless backhauling using very directional links. This thesis investigates how these links between access points may be aligned efficiently, and how alignment reflects the network organization.
The work provides a thorough presentation of different high-level aspects and background information required when designing a mmW small cell system. In terms of alignment functionality, both automatic link establishment and proactive tracking are considered. Additionally, the presentation includes an overview of beam steerable antennas, mmW propagation in urban environments, and network organization. The thesis further specifies requirements, proposes possible approaches and compares those with existing implementations.
Most of existing mmW beam alignment solutions are intended for short-range indoor communications and do not address the issues in cellular systems. While existing functionality considers only a single link between two devices, efficient design should consider both the entire network and the underlying phenomena. The devices should further exploit the existing network infrastructure, location and orientation information, and the concepts of machine learning. Even though the world has recently seen advancements in the related fields, there is still much work to be done before commercial deployment is possible.
Työ tarjoaa kattavan taustaselvityksen mm-aaltosoluverkon toteuttamiseen tarvittavista asioista.

Compressive sensing (CS) as an approach for data acquisition has recently received much attention. In CS, the signal recovery problem from the observed data requires the solution of a sparse vector from an underdetermined system of equations. The underlying sparse signal recovery problem is quite general with many applications and is the focus of this talk. The main emphasis will be on Bayesian approaches for sparse signal recovery. We will examine sparse priors such as the super-Gaussian and student-t priors and appropriate MAP estimation methods. In particular, re-weighted l2 and re-weighted l1 methods developed to solve the optimization problem will be discussed. The talk will also examine a hierarchical Bayesian framework and then study in detail an empirical Bayesian method, the Sparse Bayesian Learning (SBL) method. If time permits, we will also discuss Bayesian methods for sparse recovery problems with structure; Intra-vector correlation in the context of the block sparse model and inter-vector correlation in the context of the multiple measurement vector problem

Today's Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) networks cannot support
the exponential growth in mobile traffic forecast for the next decade. By
2020, according to Ericsson, 6 billion mobile subscribers worldwide are projected
to generate 46 exabytes of mobile data traffic monthly from 24 billion
connected devices, smartphones and short-range Internet of Things (IoT)
devices being the key prosumers. In response, 5G networks are foreseen
to markedly outperform legacy 4G systems. Triggered by the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) under the IMT-2020 network initiative, 5G
will support three broad categories of use cases: enhanced mobile broadband
(eMBB) for multi-Gbps data rate applications; ultra-reliable and low latency
communications (URLLC) for critical scenarios; and massive machine
type communications (mMTC) for massive connectivity. Among the several
technology enablers being explored for 5G, millimeter-wave (mmWave)
communication, massive MIMO antenna arrays and ultra-dense small cell
networks (UDNs) feature as the dominant technologies. These technologies
in synergy are anticipated to provide the 1000_ capacity increase for 5G
networks (relative to 4G) through the combined impact of large additional
bandwidth, spectral efficiency (SE) enhancement and high frequency reuse,
respectively. However, although these technologies can pave the way towards
gigabit wireless, there are still several challenges to solve in terms of
how we can fully harness the available bandwidth efficiently through appropriate
beamforming and channel modeling approaches. In this thesis, we
investigate the system performance enhancements realizable with mmWave
massive MIMO in 5G UDN and cellular infrastructure-to-everything (C-I2X)
application scenarios involving pedestrian and vehicular users. As a critical
component of the system-level simulation approach adopted in this thesis,
we implemented 3D channel models for the accurate characterization of the
wireless channels in these scenarios and for realistic performance evaluation.
To address the hardware cost, complexity and power consumption of the
massive MIMO architectures, we propose a novel generalized framework for
hybrid beamforming (HBF) array structures. The generalized model reveals
the opportunities that can be harnessed with the overlapped subarray structures
for a balanced trade-o_ between SE and energy efficiently (EE) of 5G
networks. The key results in this investigation show that mmWave massive
MIMO can deliver multi-Gbps rates for 5G whilst maintaining energy-efficient operation of the network.
móvel capaz de suportar aplicações com débitos na ordem de vários Gbps;
Nesta tese investigamos a
coisa' (do inglês: cellular infrastructure-to-everything) envolvendo
utilizadores pedestres e veiculares.
