The aim of this thesis is to discuss the herstory of The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, and the process of creating a comic book about them. In the first part, the author discusses his introduction to the medium of comic books. Next the thesis notes comparative graphic novels and their narrative techniques. These show that there is a growing demand for historical fiction and creative nonfiction comics. In a detailed central section, the thesis presents the intersectional solidarity within the band. Here the thesis draws on many different resources including; books, panel discussions, and documentaries. After this, the thesis discusses the author’s process for writing and illustrating the first chapter of his graphic novel. In conclusion, the author recounts the ways in which an education at Syracuse University positively influenced the creation of his most recent comic book work. This thesis hopes to offer all Syracuse University students useful tips on writing and illustrating historical graphic novels, and thus making a small contribution to improving the knowledge of the university’s artistic and literary communities

The COVID-19 outbreak has brought about the offline-to-online transformation of EFL undergraduate thesis supervision along with its challenging complexities. Anchored in a combination of realistic and constructivist epistemologies, this explanatory sequential design of mixed-method research aimed to investigate students’ problems of academic writing competencies, challenges in online thesis supervision, and solutions to the problems and challenges according to thesis supervisors’ perspectives. Data was first gathered using a closed-ended questionnaire involving fifty thesis supervisors from Central Java and Papua universities as the respondents. Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted to process this data.  Twenty-three of the respondents were then purposively selected for interviews and focus group discussions, the data of which was analyzed using interactive model-driven analyses. This study revealed students’ problems of academic writing competencies covering the dimensions of thesis elements and writing performances. Subsequently, multiple challenges were unraveled pertaining to the issues of technological competencies, time management, complexities of students’ field research, and students’ unstable motivation. The supervisors proposed contextual solutions and those demonstrating their interventions for improving students’ metacognition, self-efficacy, and growth mindsets in academic writing. Further studies are expected to work on more in-depth mixed-method investigations that examine the interactions of motivational and strategic constructs predicting academic writing competencies to dive more deeply into the problems, challenges, and solutions concerning the online thesis supervisio

Distance learning postgraduate student stress while writing a dissertation or thesis

Working on a postgraduate degree can be a stressful experience for students, including distance learning postgraduate students who are at the stage of writing their dissertation or thesis. In this mixed methods study, 748 distance learning postgraduate students who were enrolled at a South African university and were engaged in the dissertation or thesis stage, completed an online questionnaire about potential stressors and experienced stress. Quantitative and qualitative data both indicated two general sources of stress: 1) uncertainty about the research/writing process along with insufficient support from supervisors, and 2) difficulties with time management. Issues pertaining to relationships, health, and finances were not as strongly related to overall stress. The findings suggest that universities with distance learning postgraduate programs could help their students by offering training or counselling services that are tailored to their needs, such as in how to balance academic work with family and employment responsibilities. Other implications include improving how supervisors assist distance learning postgraduate students, such as in maintaining regular contact with students, expediting the provision of feedback, and improving clarity in correspondence, to help ensure that distance learning students receive the guidance they require when writing their dissertation or thesis.NRFPsycholog

A Data Mining Toolbox for Collaborative Writing Processes

    Get PDF
Collaborative writing (CW) is an essential skill in academia and industry. Providing support during the process of CW can be useful not only for achieving better quality documents, but also for improving the CW skills of the writers. In order to properly support collaborative writing, it is essential to understand how ideas and concepts are developed during the writing process, which consists of a series of steps of writing activities. These steps can be considered as sequence patterns comprising both time events and the semantics of the changes made during those steps. Two techniques can be combined to examine those patterns: process mining, which focuses on extracting process-related knowledge from event logs recorded by an information system; and semantic analysis, which focuses on extracting knowledge about what the student wrote or edited. This thesis contributes (i) techniques to automatically extract process models of collaborative writing processes and (ii) visualisations to describe aspects of collaborative writing. These two techniques form a data mining toolbox for collaborative writing by using process mining, probabilistic graphical models, and text mining. First, I created a framework, WriteProc, for investigating collaborative writing processes, integrated with the existing cloud computing writing tools in Google Docs. Secondly, I created new heuristic to extract the semantic nature of text edits that occur in the document revisions and automatically identify the corresponding writing activities. Thirdly, based on sequences of writing activities, I propose methods to discover the writing process models and transitional state diagrams using a process mining algorithm, Heuristics Miner, and Hidden Markov Models, respectively. Finally, I designed three types of visualisations and made contributions to their underlying techniques for analysing writing processes. All components of the toolbox are validated against annotated writing activities of real documents and a synthetic dataset. I also illustrate how the automatically discovered process models and visualisations are used in the process analysis with real documents written by groups of graduate students. I discuss how the analyses can be used to gain further insight into how students work and create their collaborative documents

This paper is aimed to improve writing skill of senior high schools students by using picture series technique. To achieve the objective, this paper focuses on 3 (three) previous studies about teaching writing using picture series. Those studies are taken from some English thesis and journal about picture series. After compiling and understanding all the findings of those research, the conclusion is given based the usage of picture series in several written form and also the effectiveness of techniques by using pictures series during the process of students writing activities. The discussion told that the improving of students writing skills using picture series, mostly the previous researcher uses pre-test and post-test as data collection. The result of post-test writing is always higher or better than pre-test after using picture series technique. Most of previous researchers use quantitative research method because the result of the research can be measured accurately. The application of picture series can be improved in the written form of narrative text, descriptive text, and recount text. The usage of picture series is expected to improve the students’ writing ability as it can help them with the new ideas and vocabularies. Implementing picture series is also effective to improve the students’ motivation in the writing process. The common writing problems in the aspects of content, vocabulary, language use and organization also can be reduced by implementing picture series in the teaching and learning process of writin

Trials, Tribulations, and Triumphs: Writing the Major Paper or Thesis as a Graduate Student with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

    Get PDF
Graduate students with attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) are at risk for failure to complete their graduate programs. Skills used in writing a major paper or thesis requirement incorporate those that are particularly compromised by the disorder. The literature does not address the problems facing graduate students with AD/HD, and disability service programs do not appear to offer support tailored to the needs of this population. This phenomenological study probes the experience of five graduate students with AD/HD who were in the process of writing, or had completed a major paper or thesis. This paper hopes to shed light on problems that may impede their progress, as well as strategies that students may apply to overcome them. The author provides suggestions for improving graduate program support for students with AD/HD
