    A set of metrics for characterizing simulink model comprehension

    Simulink is a powerful tool for Embedded Systems, playing a key role in dynamic systems modeling. However, far too little attention has been paid to quality of Simulink models. In addition, no research has been found linking the relationship between model complexity and its impact in the comprehension quality of Simulink models. The aim of this paper is to define a set of metrics to support the characterization of Simulink models and to investigate their relationship with the model comprehension property. For this study, we performed a controlled experiment using two versions of a robotic Simulink model ā€” one of them was constructed through the ad hoc development approach and the other one through the re-engineered development approach. The results of the experiment show that the re-engineered model is more comprehensible than the ad hoc model. In summary, the set of metrics collected from each version of the Simulink model suggests an inverse relationship with the model comprehension, i.e., the lower the metrics, the greater the model comprehension.Facultad de InformĆ”tic

    Towards Automated Test Sequence Generation

    The article presents a novel control-flow based test sequence generation technique using UML 2.0 activity diagram, which is a behavioral type of UML diagram. Like other model-based techniques, this technique can be used in the earlier phases of the development process owing to the availability of the design models of the system. The activity diagram model is seamlessly converted into a colored Petri net. We proposed a technique that enables the automatic generation of test sequences according to a given coverage criteria from the execution of the colored Petri nets model. Two types of structural coverage criteria for AD based models, namely sequential and concurrent coverage are described. The proposed technique was applied to an example to demonstrate its feasibility and the generated test sequences were evaluated against selected coverage criteria. This technique can potentially be adapted to service oriented applications, workflows, and concurrent applications

    Using status messages in the distributed test architecture

    If the system under test has multiple interfaces/ports and these are physically distributed then in testing we place a tester at each port. If these testers cannot directly communicate with one another and there is no global clock then we are testing in the distributed test architecture. If the distributed test architecture is used then there may be input sequences that cannot be applied in testing without introducing controllability problems. Additionally, observability problems can allow fault masking. In this paper we consider the situation in which the testers can apply a status message: an input that causes the system under test to identify its current state. We show how such a status message can be used in order to overcome controllability and observability problems
