    A survey of self organisation in future cellular networks

    This article surveys the literature over the period of the last decade on the emerging field of self organisation as applied to wireless cellular communication networks. Self organisation has been extensively studied and applied in adhoc networks, wireless sensor networks and autonomic computer networks; however in the context of wireless cellular networks, this is the first attempt to put in perspective the various efforts in form of a tutorial/survey. We provide a comprehensive survey of the existing literature, projects and standards in self organising cellular networks. Additionally, we also aim to present a clear understanding of this active research area, identifying a clear taxonomy and guidelines for design of self organising mechanisms. We compare strength and weakness of existing solutions and highlight the key research areas for further development. This paper serves as a guide and a starting point for anyone willing to delve into research on self organisation in wireless cellular communication networks

    Heterogeneous LTE/ Wi-Fi architecture for intelligent transportation systems

    Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) make use of advanced technologies to enhance road safety and improve traffic efficiency. It is anticipated that ITS will play a vital future role in improving traffic efficiency, safety, comfort and emissions. In order to assist the passengers to travel safely, efficiently and conveniently, several application requirements have to be met simultaneously. In addition to the delivery of regular traffic and safety information, vehicular networks have been recently required to support infotainment services. Previous vehicular network designs and architectures do not satisfy this increasing traffic demand as they are setup for either voice or data traffic, which is not suitable for the transfer of vehicular traffic. This new requirement is one of the key drivers behind the need for new mobile wireless broadband architectures and technologies. For this purpose, this thesis proposes and investigates a heterogeneous IEEE 802.11 and LTE vehicular system that supports both infotainment and ITS traffic control data. IEEE 802.11g is used for V2V communications and as an on-board access network while, LTE is used for V2I communications. A performance simulation-based study is conducted to validate the feasibility of the proposed system in an urban vehicular environment. The system performance is evaluated in terms of data loss, data rate, delay and jitter. Several simulation scenarios are performed and evaluated. In the V2I-only scenario, the delay, jitter and data drops for both ITS and video traffic are within the acceptable limits, as defined by vehicular application requirements. Although a tendency of increase in video packet drops during handover from one eNodeB to another is observed yet, the attainable data loss rate is still below the defined benchmarks. In the integrated V2V-V2I scenario, data loss in uplink ITS traffic was initially observed so, Burst communication technique is applied to prevent packet losses in the critical uplink ITS traffic. A quantitative analysis is performed to determine the number of packets per burst, the inter-packet and inter-burst intervals. It is found that a substantial improvement is achieved using a two-packet Burst, where no packets are lost in the uplink direction. The delay, jitter and data drops for both uplink and downlink ITS traffic, and video traffic are below the benchmarks of vehicular applications. Thus, the results indicate that the proposed heterogeneous system offers acceptable performance that meets the requirements of the different vehicular applications.     For the last few decades mobile technologies have undergone enormous transformation. Mobile broadband for cellular networks has been exponentially evolving with time and in order to meet the future expectation for this high demand newer and better technologies have to be invented. The enormous success of smart electronics such as tablets, smart phones and other hand held devices that use the Internet have generated a lot of Internet traffic therefore, diving LTE to its limit. LTE (4G) which is a high speed wireless communication standard for mobile phones and data terminals is a significant upgrade of GSM and UMTS network technologies. The Technology has downlink peak rates of 300Mbits/s and Uplink peak rates of 75Mbits/s with transfer latency rate of less than 5ms. Power Consumption level for LTE is of significant concern as well as the energy consumption in cellular networks. To solve the limitations in LTE, one great candidate is 5G radio standard. 5G relies heavily on massive MIMO to achieve its targets. This thesis looked into significance of Multi-antenna (Massive MIMO) at the BS as a solution for energy efficiency, increased data rates and the reduction of latency rates in wireless broadband communication.     Modeling and characterization of urban radio channels for mobile communications

    Results of this thesis contribute in modeling and characterization of radio channels for future mobile communications. The results are presented mainly in three parts: a) modeling of propagation mechanisms, b) methodology of developing a propagation model, c) characterization of urban radio channel. One of the main propagation physical phenomena that have an important role in diverting signals to non line of sight scenarios is the diffraction process. This thesis proposes diffraction coefficients that have better agreement with finite difference time domain solution and rigorous diffraction theory than the coefficient commonly used in propagation predictions for mobile communications. The importance of diffuse scattering has also been investigated and showed that this physical process may have a key role in urban propagation, with a particular impact on the delay spread and angular spread of the signal at the receiver. This thesis proposes wideband propagation models for main and perpendicular streets of urban street grids. The propagation models are ray-based and are given in explicit mathematical expressions. Each ray is characterized in terms of its amplitude, delay, and angle of arrival, angle of departure for vertical and horizontal polarizations. Each of these characteristics is given in a closed mathematical form. Having wideband propagation model in explicit expression makes its implementation easy and computation fast. Secondary source modeling approach for perpendicular streets has also been introduced in this thesis. The last part of the thesis deals with characterization of urban radio channels for extracting parameters that help in successful design of mobile communication systems. Knowledge of channel characteristics enables reaching optimum trade off between system performance and complexity. This thesis analyzes measurement results at 2 GHz to extract channel parameters in terms of Rake finger characteristics in order to get information that helps to optimize Rake receiver design for enhanced-IMT2000 systems. Finger life distance has also been investigated for both micro- and small cell scenarios. This part of the thesis also presents orthogonality factor of radio channel for W-CDMA downlink at different bandwidths. Characterization of dispersion metrics in delay and angular domains for microcellular channels is also presented at different base station antenna heights. A measure of (dis-) similarity between multipath components in terms of separation distance in delay and angular domains is introduced by the concept of distance function, which is a step toward in development of algorithm extraction and analysis multipath clustering. In summary, the significant contributions of the thesis are in three parts. 1) Development of new diffraction coefficients and corrections of limitations of existing one for accurate propagation predictions for mobile communications. 2) Development of wideband propagation models for urban street grid. The novelty of the model is the development in explicit mathematical expressions. The developed models can be used to study propagation problem in microcellular urban street grids. 3) Presenting channel parameters that will help in the design of future mobile communication systems (enhanced-IMT2000), like number of active fingers, finger life distance, and orthogonality factors for different bandwidths. In addition, a technique based on multipath separation distance is proposed as a step toward in development of algorithms for extraction and analysis of multipath clusters.reviewe

    Efficient radio resource management in next generation wireless networks

    The current decade has witnessed a phenomenal growth in mobile wireless communication networks and subscribers. In 2015, mobile wireless devices and connections were reported to have grown to about 7.9 billion, exceeding human population. The explosive growth in mobile wireless communication network subscribers has created a huge demand for wireless network capacity, ubiquitous wireless network coverage, and enhanced Quality of Service (QoS). These demands have led to several challenging problems for wireless communication networks operators and designers. The Next Generation Wireless Networks (NGWNs) will support high mobility communications, such as communication in high-speed rails. Mobile users in such high mobility environment demand reliable QoS, however, such users are plagued with a poor signal-tonoise ratio, due to the high vehicular penetration loss, increased transmission outage and handover information overhead, leading to poor QoS provisioning for the networks' mobile users. Providing a reliable QoS for high mobility users remains one of the unique challenges for NGWNs. The increased wireless network capacity and coverage of NGWNs means that mobile communication users at the cell-edge should have enhanced network performance. However, due to path loss (path attenuation), interference, and radio background noise, mobile communication users at the cell-edge can experience relatively poor transmission channel qualities and subsequently forced to transmit at a low bit transmission rate, even when the wireless communication networks can support high bit transmission rate. Furthermore, the NGWNs are envisioned to be Heterogeneous Wireless Networks (HWNs). The NGWNs are going to be the integration platform of diverse homogeneous wireless communication networks for a convergent wireless communication network. The HWNs support single and multiple calls (group calls), simultaneously. Decision making is an integral core of radio resource management. One crucial decision making in HWNs is network selection. Network selection addresses the problem of how to select the best available access network for a given network user connection. For the integrated platform of HWNs to be truly seamless and efficient, a robust and stable wireless access network selection algorithm is needed. To meet these challenges for the different mobile wireless communication network users, the NGWNs will have to provide a great leap in wireless network capacity, coverage, QoS, and radio resource utilization. Moving wireless communication networks (mobile hotspots) have been proposed as a solution to providing reliable QoS to high mobility users. In this thesis, an Adaptive Thinning Mobility Aware (ATMA) Call Admission Control (CAC) algorithm for improving the QoS and radio resource utilization of the mobile hotspot networks, which are of critical importance for communicating nodes in moving wireless networks is proposed. The performance of proposed ATMA CAC scheme is investigated and compare it with the traditional CAC scheme. The ATMA scheme exploits the mobility events in the highspeed mobility communication environment and the calls (new and handoff calls) generation pattern to enhance the QoS (new call blocking and handoff call dropping probabilities) of the mobile users. The numbers of new and handoff calls in wireless communication networks are dynamic random processes that can be effectively modeled by the Continuous Furthermore, the NGWNs are envisioned to be Heterogeneous Wireless Networks (HWNs). The NGWNs are going to be the integration platform of diverse homogeneous wireless communication networks for a convergent wireless communication network.     TD-SCDMA Relay Networks

    PhDWhen this research was started, TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) was still in the research/ development phase, but now, at the time of writing this thesis, it is in commercial use in 10 large cities in China including Beijing and Shang Hai. In all of these cities HSDPA is enabled. The roll-out of the commercial deployment is progressing fast with installations in another 28 cities being underway now. However, during the pre-commercial TD-SCDM trail in China, which started from year 2006, some interference problems have been noticed especially in the network planning and initialization phases. Interference is always an issue in any network and the goal of the work reported in this thesis is to improve network coverage and capacity in the presence of interference. Based on an analysis of TD-SCDMA issues and how network interference arises, this thesis proposes two enhancements to the network in addition to the standard N-frequency technique. These are (i) the introduction of the concentric circle cell concept and (ii) the addition of a relay network that makes use of other users at the cell boundary. This overall approach not only optimizes the resilience to interference but increases the network coverage without adding more Node Bs. Based on the cell planning parameters from the research, TD-SCDMA HSDPA services in dense urban area and non-HSDPA services in rural areas were simulated to investigate the network performance impact after introducing the relay network into a TD-SCDMA network. The results for HSDPA applications show significant improvement in the TDSCDMA relay network both for network capacity and network interference aspects compared to standard TD-SCDMA networks. The results for non- HSDPA service show that although the network capacity has not changed after adding in the relay network (due to the code limitation in TD-SCDMA), the TD-SCDMA relay network has better interference performance and greater coverage
