    Interactive Optimisation in Marine Propeller Design

    Marine propeller design is a complex engineering problem that depends on the collaboration of several scientific disciplines. During the design process, the blade designers need to consider contradicting requirements and come up with one optimal propeller design as a solution to the specific problem. This solution is usually the trade-o between the stakeholders\u27 requirements and the objectives and constraints of the problem.The significant amount of design variables related to blade design problems requires a systematic search in a large design space. Automated optimisation has been utilised for a number of blade design applications, as it has the advantage of creating a large set of design alternatives in a short period of time. However, automated optimisation has failed to be used in industrial applications, due to its complex set-up and the fact that in more complex scenarios the majority of the non-dominated design alternatives are infeasible. This necessitates a way of enabling the blade designers to interact with the algorithm during the optimisation process.The purpose of this thesis is to develop a methodology that supports the blade designers during the design process and to enable them to interact with the design tools and assess design characteristics during the optimisation. The overall aim is to improve the design performance and speed. According to the proposed methodology, blade designers are called during intermediate stages of the optimisation to provide information about the designs, and then this information is input in the algorithm. The goal is to steer the optimisation to an area of the design space with feasible Pareto designs, based on the designer\u27s preference. Since there are objectives and constraints that cannot be quantified with the available computational tools, keeping the "human in the loop" is essential, as a means to obtain feasible designs and quickly eliminate designs that are impractical or unrealistic.The results of this research suggest that through the proposed methodology the designers have more control over the whole optimisation procedure and they obtain detailed Pareto frontiers that involve designs that are characterised by high performance and follow the user preference

    Propeller optimization by interactive genetic algorithms and machine learning

    Marine propeller design can be carried out with the aid of automated optimization, but experience shows that a such an approach has still been inferior to manual design in industrial scenarios. In this study, the automated propeller design optimization is evolved by integrating human–computer interaction as an intermediate step. An interactive optimization methodology, based on interactive genetic algorithms (IGAs), has been developed, where the blade designers systematically guide a genetic algorithm towards the objectives. The designers visualize and assess the shape of the blade cavitation and this evaluation is integrated in the optimization method. The IGA is further integrated with a support-vector machine model, in order to avoid user fatigue, IGA\u27s main disadvantage. The results of the present study show that the IGA optimization searches solutions in a more targeted manner and eventually finds more non-dominated feasible designs that also show a good cavitation behaviour in agreement with designer preference

    As Air Force operations continue to move toward the use of more autonomous systems and more human-machine teaming in general, there is a corresponding need to swiftly evaluate systems with these capabilities. We support this development through software design improvements of the execution of human cognitive performance experiments. This thesis sought to answer the following two research questions addressing the core functionality that these experiments rely on for execution and analysis: 1) What data infrastructure software requirements are necessary to execute the experimental design of human cognitive performance experiments? 2) How effectively does a central data mediator design pattern meet the time-alignment requirements of human cognitive performance studies? To answer these questions, this research contributes an exploration of establishing design patterns to reduce the cost of conducting human cognitive performance studies. The activities included in this exploration were a method for requirements gathering, a meta-study of recent experiments, and a design pattern evaluation all focused on the experimental design domain

    Evolutionary design assistants for architecture

    In its parallel pursuit of an increased competitivity for design offices and more pleasurable and easier workflows for designers, artificial design intelligence is a technical, intellectual, and political challenge. While human-machine cooperation has become commonplace through Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, a more improved collaboration and better support appear possible only through an endeavor into a kind of artificial design intelligence, which is more sensitive to the human perception of affairs. Considered as part of the broader Computational Design studies, the research program of this quest can be called Artificial / Autonomous / Automated Design (AD). The current available level of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for design is limited and a viable aim for current AD would be to develop design assistants that are capable of producing drafts for various design tasks. Thus, the overall aim of this thesis is the development of approaches, techniques, and tools towards artificial design assistants that offer a capability for generating drafts for sub-tasks within design processes. The main technology explored for this aim is Evolutionary Computation (EC), and the target design domain is architecture. The two connected research questions of the study concern, first, the investigation of the ways to develop an architectural design assistant, and secondly, the utilization of EC for the development of such assistants. While developing approaches, techniques, and computational tools for such an assistant, the study also carries out a broad theoretical investigation into the main problems, challenges, and requirements towards such assistants on a rather overall level. Therefore, the research is shaped as a parallel investigation of three main threads interwoven along several levels, moving from a more general level to specific applications. The three research threads comprise, first, theoretical discussions and speculations with regard to both existing literature and the proposals and applications of the thesis; secondly, proposals for descriptive and prescriptive models, mappings, summary illustrations, task structures, decomposition schemes, and integratory frameworks; and finally, experimental applications of these proposals. This tripartite progression allows an evaluation of each proposal both conceptually and practically; thereby, enabling a progressive improvement of the understanding regarding the research question, while producing concrete outputs on the way. Besides theoretical and interpretative examinations, the thesis investigates its subject through a set of practical and speculative proposals, which function as both research instruments and the outputs of the study. The first main output of the study is the “design_proxy” approach (d_p), which is an integrated approach for draft making design assistants. It is an outcome of both theoretical examinations and experimental applications, and proposes an integration of, (1) flexible and relaxed task definitions and representations (instead of strict formalisms), (2) intuitive interfaces that make use of usual design media, (3) evaluation of solution proposals through their similarity to given examples, and (4) a dynamic evolutionary approach for solution generation. The design_proxy approach may be useful for AD researchers that aim at developing practical design assistants, as has been examined and demonstrated with the two applications, i.e., design_proxy.graphics and design_proxy.layout. The second main output, the “Interleaved Evolutionary Algorithm” (IEA, or Interleaved EA) is a novel evolutionary algorithm proposed and used as the underlying generative mechanism of design_proxybased design assistants. The Interleaved EA is a dynamic, adaptive, and multi-objective EA, in which one of the objectives leads the evolution until its fitness progression stagnates; in the sense that the settings and fitness values of this objective is used for most evolutionary decisions. In this way, the Interleaved EA enables the use of different settings and operators for each of the objectives within an overall task, which would be the same for all objectives in a regular multi-objective EA. This property gives the algorithm a modular structure, which offers an improvable method for the utilization of domain-specific knowledge for each sub-task, i.e., objective. The Interleaved EA can be used by Evolutionary Computation (EC) researchers and by practitioners who employ EC for their tasks. As a third main output, the “Architectural Stem Cells Framework” is a conceptual framework for architectural design assistants. It proposes a dynamic and multi-layered method for combining a set of design assistants for larger tasks in architectural design. The first component of the framework is a layer-based, parallel task decomposition approach, which aims at obtaining a dynamic parallelization of sub-tasks within a more complicated problem. The second component of the framework is a conception for the development mechanisms for building drafts, i.e., Architectural Stem Cells (ASC). An ASC can be conceived as a semantically marked geometric structure, which contains the information that specifies the possibilities and constraints for how an abstract building may develop from an undetailed stage to a fully developed building draft. ASCs are required for re-integrating the separated task layers of an architectural problem through solution-based development. The ASC Framework brings together many of the ideas of this thesis for a practical research agenda and it is presented to the AD researchers in architecture. Finally, the “design_proxy.layout” (d_p.layout) is an architectural layout design assistant based on the design_proxy approach and the IEA. The system uses a relaxed problem definition (producing draft layouts) and a flexible layout representation that permits the overlapping of design units and boundaries. User interaction with the system is carried out through intuitive 2D graphics and the functional evaluations are performed by measuring the similarity of a proposal to existing layouts. Functioning in an integrated manner, these properties make the system a practicable and enjoying design assistant, which was demonstrated through two workshop cases. The d_p.layout is a versatile and robust layout design assistant that can be used by architects in their design processes

    This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio

    Comfort, Acceptance, and Preferences: The Designing of a Human-Robot Workstation that Puts the Human First

    The purely manual versions of manufacturing are becoming less common, and automation is increasing. With mass production moving towards mass customization this change is inevitable. However, a future of automation does not mean that operators are going to be replaced. In fact, it means that operators’ jobs are about to become more meaningful and value adding for themselves and the company. Soon majority of the jobs where operators do the repetitive mindless task of a robot will be gone. It is time for Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC) to advance the assembly process to the next level. Human-robot teams will be formed to combine their individual strengths and compensate for their individual weaknesses. The success of human-robot collaboration heavily depends on the operator’s acceptance of the robot. Unfortunately, operators are worried about robots taking their jobs, diminishing their self-worth, and putting them in danger. To mitigate these concerns the objective of this thesis is to model the design requirements of a human-robot collaborative assembly station that appeals to operator comfort and acceptance while still supporting the needs of production. A combination of fulfilling requirements, providing the operator with a better understanding of the robot’s capabilities, and providing the operator with limited control could lead to an improved interaction between operators and robots. Operator feedback was obtained from professionals in industry through surveys and structured interviews. Then the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) tool was used to translate the vague operator requirements captured in the survey responses and interviews into product-relevant parameters that designers and engineers can apply. The nine operator requirements derived for working with robots are safety, dependability, value-adding, controllability, helpfulness, easy to communicate with, teachable, easy to fix, and enjoyable to work with
