Cellular Automata Applications in Shortest Path Problem
Cellular Automata (CAs) are computational models that can capture the
essential features of systems in which global behavior emerges from the
collective effect of simple components, which interact locally. During the last
decades, CAs have been extensively used for mimicking several natural processes
and systems to find fine solutions in many complex hard to solve computer
science and engineering problems. Among them, the shortest path problem is one
of the most pronounced and highly studied problems that scientists have been
trying to tackle by using a plethora of methodologies and even unconventional
approaches. The proposed solutions are mainly justified by their ability to
provide a correct solution in a better time complexity than the renowned
Dijkstra's algorithm. Although there is a wide variety regarding the
algorithmic complexity of the algorithms suggested, spanning from simplistic
graph traversal algorithms to complex nature inspired and bio-mimicking
algorithms, in this chapter we focus on the successful application of CAs to
shortest path problem as found in various diverse disciplines like computer
science, swarm robotics, computer networks, decision science and biomimicking
of biological organisms' behaviour. In particular, an introduction on the first
CA-based algorithm tackling the shortest path problem is provided in detail.
After the short presentation of shortest path algorithms arriving from the
relaxization of the CAs principles, the application of the CA-based shortest
path definition on the coordinated motion of swarm robotics is also introduced.
Moreover, the CA based application of shortest path finding in computer
networks is presented in brief. Finally, a CA that models exactly the behavior
of a biological organism, namely the Physarum's behavior, finding the

Quickest Paths in Simulations of Pedestrians
This contribution proposes a method to make agents in a microscopic
simulation of pedestrian traffic walk approximately along a path of estimated
minimal remaining travel time to their destination. Usually models of
pedestrian dynamics are (implicitly) built on the assumption that pedestrians
walk along the shortest path. Model elements formulated to make pedestrians
locally avoid collisions and intrusion into personal space do not produce
motion on quickest paths. Therefore a special model element is needed, if one
wants to model and simulate pedestrians for whom travel time matters most (e.g.
travelers in a station hall who are late for a train). Here such a model
element is proposed, discussed and used within the Social Force Model.Comment: revised version submitte

- Mechanism: A machine or part of a machine that performs a particular task computation: the use of a computer for calculation.- Computable: Capable of being worked out by calculation, especially using a computer.- Simulation: Used to denote both the modeling of a physical system by a computer as well as the modeling of the operation of a computer by a mechanical system; the difference will be clear from the context. Definition of the Subject Mechanical devices for computation appear to be largely displaced by the widespread use of microprocessor-based computers that are pervading almost all aspects of our lives. Nevertheless, mechanical devices for computation are of interest for at least three reasons: (a) Historical: The use of mechanical devices for computation is of central importance in the historical study of technologies, with a history dating back thousands of years and with surprising applications even in relatively recent times. (b) Technical & Practical: The use of mechanical devices for computation persists and has not yet been completely displaced by widespread use of microprocessor-based computers. Mechanical computers have found applications in various emerging technologies at the micro-scale that combine mechanical functions with computational and control functions not feasible by purely electronic processing. Mechanical computers also have been demonstrated at the molecular scale, and may also provide unique capabilities at that scale. The physical designs for these modern micro and molecular-scale mechanical computers may be based on the prior designs of the large-scale mechanical computers constructed in the past. A travel time-based variable grid approach for an activity-based cellular automata model
Urban growth and population growth are used in numerous models to determine their potential impacts on both the natural and the socio-economic systems. Cellular automata (CA) land-use models became popular for urban growth modelling since they predict spatial interactions between different land uses in an explicit and straightforward manner. A common deficiency of land-use models is that they only deal with abstract categories, while in reality, several activities are often hosted at one location (e.g. population, employment, agricultural yield, nature…). Recently, a multiple activity-based variable grid CA model was proposed to represent several urban activities (population and economic activities) within single model cells. The distance-decay influence rules of the model included both short- and long-distance interactions, but all distances between cells were simply Euclidean distances. The geometry of the real transportation system, as well as its interrelations with the evolving activities, were therefore not taken into account. To improve this particular model, we make the influence rules functions of time travelled on the transportation system. Specifically, the new algorithm computes and stores all travel times needed for the variable grid CA. This approach provides fast run times, and it has a higher resolution and more easily modified parameters than the alternative approach of coupling the activity-based CA model to an external transportation model. This paper presents results from one Euclidean scenario and four different transport network scenarios to show the effects on land-use and activity change in an application to Belgium. The approach can add value to urban scenario analysis and the development of transport- and activity-related spatial indicators, and constitutes a general improvement of the activity-based CA model

Automatic detection and classification of leukaemia cells
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Today, there is a substantial number of software and research groups that focus on the development of image processing software to extract useful information from medical images, in order to assist and improve patient diagnosis. The work presented in this thesis is centred on processing of images of blood and bone marrow smears of patients suffering from leukaemia, a common type of cancer. In general, cancer is due to aberrant gene expression, which is caused by either mutations or epigenetic changes in DNA. Poor diet and unhealthy lifestyle may trigger or contribute to these changes, although the underlying mechanism is often unknown. Importantly, many cancer types including leukaemia are curable and patient survival and treatment can be improved, subject to prompt diagnosis. In particular, this study focuses on Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), which can be of eight distinct types (M0 to M7), with the main objective to develop a methodology to automatically detect and classify leukaemia cells into one of the above types. The data was collected from the Department of Haematology, Universiti Sains Malaysia, in Malaysia. Three main methods, namely Cellular Automata, Heuristic Search and classification using Neural Networks are facilitated. In the case of Cellular Automata, an improved method based on the 8-neighbourhood and rules were developed to remove noise from images and estimate the radius of the potential blast cells contained in them. The proposed methodology selects the starting points, corresponding to potential blast cells, for the subsequent seeded heuristic search. The Seeded Heuristic employs a new fitness function for blast cell detection. Furthermore, the WEKA software is utilised for classification of blast cells and hence images, into AML subtypes. As a result accuracy of 97.22% was achieved in the classification of blasts into M3 and other AML subtypes. Finally, these algorithms are integrated into an automated system for image processing. In brief, the research presented in this thesis involves the use of advanced computational techniques for processing and classification of medical images, that is, images of blood samples from patients suffering from leukaemia.The Institute of Higher Education of Malaysia and the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)
